  1. "Since the policy includes references to Indians but not to Vikings or Irish, it discriminates on the basis of race, which is not only wrong but also probably illegal." "Who is empowered to grant or deny the use of words in the public domain? Who controls the use of Irish, Scandinavians (Vikings), Mountaineers,
  2. The First Amendment is much more important than "Fighting Sioux". Universities have to have the First Amendment or they have nothing. That's why fight the fight if it comes to it.
  3. If it went to court and UND won, would UND keep the name? That would be the ultimate victory --> we defended the principle, we were right on principle, and now we'll choose whatever we want. Welcome to true freedom. This isn't about "Fighting Sioux", this is about "First Amendment".
  4. Yo "ESPN Insider", when ESPN calls you'll lose that handle. It's their trademark. However, a word in the public domain is a whole other matter. Controlling which people can use and how they can use words that are clearly public domain (e.g. Sioux Falls and Sioux City) is "probably" a First Amendment issue. Universities should be standing up for First Amendment protections and rights.
  5. Which to have on your side, the law or the NCAA? Hmmm.....
  6. The redshirt rule (last time I read it) says that you can't have played in more than 20% of your team's scheduled regular season games and none that you play in can be in the second half of the schedule. Given UND's 11 game schedule, game 2 is 18.2% of games and neither was in the second half of the year (obviously). Seems like these two games won't cost him the full year of eligibility.
  7. I was thinking more like restraints, administrative variety. Why? I smell poseur.
  8. So only Democrats could tell us about Mr. Clinton and only Republicans could tell us about Mr. Bush. George Orwell would be so proud.
  9. I'll believe Foyt changed from jersey "4" to jersey "25" but not that he's gone from shooting right to shooting left.
  10. Here's another scenario: What if the Florida Seminoles say "aye" but the Oklahoma really did say "nay". Or if Chippewas in Wisconsin or Minnesota say "nay" but others say "aye"? Who do you listen to ("respect") and who do you not ("dis"?).
  11. A construed right to exclusive self-portrayal by you for you about you will disallow and nullify my enumerated right of free expression. Ah, conundrum. And the "free expression" wins except in cases of the extreme or direct physical danger. "ScottM" addressed the "extreme" already.
  12. For example: Capital One credit cards. The pillaging hoard of what looks to be Huns and Goths and Vandals. The University of Idaho Vandals. Don't say all the Vandals are gone. There were a Germanic tribe. Who knows where the bloodline is today. PS - The UND "Pillaging Hoard" has a nice ring to it.
  13. But you should be horribly upset by that. You keep telling us you're a veteran and the "Fighting Cavalry" would be "hostile and abusive" to veterans, and stereotypical as well. For the same reasons "Sioux" upsets you, as a veteran, "Cavalry" should upset you. PS - I didn't think we'd seen you hold back yet.
  14. This one is easy folks. If "Fighting Sioux" is "hostile and abusive" replace the name with the name of the greatest enemy of the Sioux. Not only would you be protecting the Sioux you'd be "hostile and abusive" to their greatest enemy! Double win, right? University of North Dakota Cavalry. Chants of "Go Sioux!" made them upset. Chants of "Go Cavalry!" should make them happy, right? And thus we've shown the name-change "logic" doesn't pass muster.
  15. Hello and welcome to today's class. I'm "The Sicatoka". I'll be giving today's lecture on civics and government as your normal instructor is preparing to take the others "to school" on these issues in the near future. First, let's clear up some misconceptions about "rights." Some of you have foolishly begun to believe you have rights that don't exist. Let me summarize these pseudo-rights, and why you are wrong about them. 1. There is no right to exclusive self-portrayal. To believe otherwise is to believe that only Democrats can tell you about Mr. Clinton and only Republicans can tell you about Mr. Bush. 2. There is no right to not be offended. Someone will always find something to be offensive to them. I know someone offended by Cheerios. No, I'm not kidding. 3. There is no right to respect. Respect is a strange quantity. You have to give it before you have any given to you. You have to earn it. It's not guaranteed. However, moving to rights we all have, under the US Constitution, we all are guaranteed equal protection under the law, and guaranteed freedom of speech. How you use them is up to you. The right to free speech trumps psuedo-right number 1 in every case. Imagine a world where you could only hear one side of any story. Pseudo-right 2 is covered by "equal protection" meaning we'll all be offended by something some day. I'd be offended if there wasn't something offensive out there; that'd be a pretty boring world otherwise. See? Equal. As far as respect, unearned respect is just that - unearned - meaning it's worthless and hollow. To demand (unearned) respect rings even more hollow. Your assignment is to go and actually read the First Amendment to the US Constitution. That's it. Questions? No? Class dismissed.
  16. Seminoles, Utes, and Chippewas press for the survival of their namesakes. The Sioux? Nope. Who's out of touch. (<--- Note that's not a question.)
  17. Reading UND's appeal they've sent some not-so-subtle messages of what would come after this.
  18. Before it was money, now it's governance. Gee, the Superconferences wanting to bolt from the NCAA and form their own organization because the NCAA isn't treating them the way they feel they should be treated? Where ever have I heard that concept before? Hmmm..... Regret indeed they may.
  19. Where do you get this stuff. Fabian's work ethic and total student-athlete performance makes him a role model if nothing else. I believe it puts him on an inside line to an "A". My wildcard for an "A": The two-time WJC participant and silent hockey-assassin Rastislav Spirko. All he does is do his job. And when's the last time he went into the corner and didn't come out with the puck? Plus, he could cuss out referees in his native tongue and they'd never know!
  20. A tribal college in South Dakota that declared bankruptcy.
  21. I once heard a very wise man muse that, "Some of the biggest bigots I've met are the 'anti-bigot' bigots." Quite.
