  1. I just listened to Dr. Kupchella's interview on ESPN Game Night. He said that one Sioux nation in ND (I'm assuming Standing Rock) has asked UND to stop. He said the other (again, assuming Spirit Lake) has told UND if it uses the name it should be using it to educate people about and to raise understanding of the American Indians (and with a "respectfully in usage" also I'm sure). That doesn't seem to align with what Mr. Kracker has been telling us. Of course, none of that matters because the Florida Seminole Nations' wishes regarding Florida State matter not to the NCAA thus none of this matters either.
  2. The Florida Seminole Nation supports FSU. The Seminoles in Oklahoma assumably do not. So there can be disagreements amongst American Indians on this matter, even within nations. Which means we need to listen to and for Sioux voices that may not agree with yours, for example the Oceti Sakowin Hunkpapa Elders, as well as yours, and sort for the truth from there.
  3. Notre Dame, French for "Our Lady", wasn't founded by the Irish. Vandals were the Germanic tribe that sacked Rome in 455 AD. Aren't religions as deserving of protection as races? And you made my point about Aztecs. All four names (Irish, Vandals, Quakers, Aztecs) are unaffected by the NCAA's recent stance.
  4. I believe we looked at those numbers and saw that American Indians got a larger proportion of those monies than their fraction of campus population would warrant. What I don't understand is this: The Florida Seminole ("Unconquered") Nation is fighting to support FSU. Have they "sold out"? If so, isn't that their right?
  5. "Vikings"? What about Irish, and Vandals, and Quakers, and Aztecs.
  6. Weren't you pontificating about UND not spending enough on Indian programs recently? The almighty dollar, eh?
  7. If you are so sure this NCAA action will finally garner "victory" (and I use that term in the hollowest, weakest possible manner) why waste your time or efforts. Or are you not sure. And of course you realize your site will be worthless, a net fiscal worth of $0, on the open market once you have achieved this "victory" and the Sioux are extinct from the realm of the collegiate. More efforts with no tangible benefits. Must be frustrating.
  8. Peter Harris Research Group and Annenberg Polling (U of Pennsylvania, an NCAA member) both have done scientifically respected surveys each with independent but similar findings. Thus comes the choice: Mock the research or mock Native Americans themselves for their perceived unenlightenment.
  9. There is no point to pondering (possible, if necessary) replacement names until the NCAA defines the "rules of engagement". Until rules as to what is and "is not" acceptable are in place don't waste your time. PS - "Sundogs" is the name normally proposed by the folks that want the "Sioux" name gone. That alone disqualifies it from consideration.
  10. Nine womens hockey scholarships at $10,000 to $12,000 per. That ain't $713,000 of state appropriated funds. And it's not $996,000 of institutional support (those are funds completely at NDSU's control) either, like shows up in NDSU's FY02 budget (per CSL report). As a matter of fact, UND's FY04 (projected revenues) budget showed $0 of institutional support and $0 of appropriated funds (and wouldn't state appropriated funds show up as such in there?). It's been 30+ days since the end of FY 05 for athletics at UND and NDSU. Where are the numbers? I'd like to see, in NDSU's case, if Mr. Inniger raised the last $600,000 the Fargo Forum said he was short as of April 17.
  11. "quickly", eh? http://www2.ncaa.org/media_and_events/asso.../0803_exec.html http://www2.ncaa.org/media_and_events/asso...de/4214n21.html
  12. Tick ..... tock ..... tick ..... tock .....
  13. Assuming you're correct, where's the line item in UND's FY 04 (projected) revenues that says "appropriated funds"? Why is the legislature ear-marking funds for athletics for one university and not for them all? (PS - It was $713,000.)

What exactly does "Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. BOOM! Building." mean if not: nothing happened for a long time and now suddenly there's a building there. Expect about the same with Canad. Blinders indeed.
  15. In the spirit of the first goal thread, which of the freshmen will be the first to spend some quality time in the sin bin this season? To make your prediction you need to: - name the freshman you think will be the first to be called for a collegiate penalty, and - list during which period of which NCAA game* he will do it (as a tie-breaker). As before, the winner gets absolutely nothing save for bragging rights. As a help, the expected freshmen on the roster are: Forwards: Ryan Duncan, Andrew Kozek, Ryan Martens, Brad Miller, TJ Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Matt Watkins Defensemen: Todd Alexander, Taylor Chorney, Joe Finley, Zach Jones, Brian Lee Goalie: Aaron Walski The first few games of the schedule*: 1. October 8 v. Miami of Ohio (at Dayton, OH) 2. October 9 v. Michigan State (at Dayton, OH) 3. October 14 v. Northeastern (REA) 4. October 15 v. Northeastern (REA) 5. October 21 v. New Hampshire (at Durham, NH) 6. October 22 v. New Hampshire (at Durham, NH) * The season opening exhibition against Manitoba does not count for this "sudo"-contest.
  16. That's the mystery-money in NDSU's budget. Where'd that come from? What is it? Were those institutional resources from another area of the NDSU budget transferred in to the athletic budget to cover up some of the what otherwise would have been million-plus dollar red ink? What I saw in the CSL Report to NDSU (the economic study) is that NDSU's FY 02 athletic budget was about 1/3 from institutional support and (state) appropriated funds and about another 1/3 came from tickets and donations. UND's (projected) FY 04 budget I found on-line showed 3/4 of the athletic budget coming from tickets and donations and $0 coming from institutional support and appropriated funds. From those two sources it looks like the schools fund and operate athletics very differently. UND appears to try to be running athletics with self-generated revenues (tickets and donations) where NDSU has a significant budget fraction coming from funds (institutional support, state appropriated funds) that could have been used in other university departments.

They're on the same schedule as the Alien Technology building in Fargo: Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. BOOM! Building.
  18. OK wise and knowing Sioux fans, which of the freshmen will be the first to light the lamp this season? To make your prediction you need to: - name the freshman you think will be the first to score a collegiate goal, and - list during which period of which NCAA game* he will do it (as a tie-breaker). The winner gets absolutely nothing save for bragging rights. As a help, the expected freshmen on the roster are: Forwards: Ryan Duncan, Andrew Kozek, Ryan Martens, Brad Miller, TJ Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Matt Watkins Defensemen: Todd Alexander, Taylor Chorney, Joe Finley, Zach Jones, Brian Lee Goalie: Aaron Walski (No disrespect intended but this wouldn't be a wise pick considering how many goals collegiate goalies have scored. ) The first few games of the schedule*: 1. October 8 v. Miami of Ohio (at Dayton, OH) 2. October 9 v. Michigan State (at Dayton, OH) 3. October 14 v. Northeastern (REA) 4. October 15 v. Northeastern (REA) 5. October 21 v. New Hampshire (at Durham, NH) 6. October 22 v. New Hampshire (at Durham, NH) * The season opening exhibition against Manitoba does not count for this "sudo"-contest.
  19. You missed two other good numbers in that 2004 EADA data. (I figured out your source.) The "total revenue of all mens sports except BB and FB" at UND was $461,047 (where the same category at NDSU was $372,581). Combine that positive revenue with the losses in MBB and FB and UND mens athletics were still in the black. (NDSU MBB, FB, else, went red, redder, reddest.) More interesting is that womens BB at UND was $24,333 and at NDSU was $87,969.
  20. Another interesting line from the story:
  21. With success comes attention. With attention comes the scouts with money. DU has just really raised the level of attention upon itself (2004, 2005). What comes next is inevitable. The Gophers denied it until Taffe, and Martin, and Vanek. It comes with success. It's a package deal. Don't be surprised by it.
  22. Fabian has pulled a 4.00 semester in the past. He'd be my guess for one of them.
  23. The team only has 3 seniors: Greene, Prpich, Marvin. Finley appears to be Greene's replacement. (I say that because I expect Greene to sign with Edmonton before fall semester begins.) VandeVelde fills Prpich's spot. Marto fills Marvin's spot. Any recruiting now most likely signals that early departures (summer of 2006) are in store. Prime candidates? Smaby. Stafford. Zajac.
