Great West Football Conference

1) The California schools will have scheduling headaches for years to come. To paraphrase Cal Poly head coach Rich Ellerson, there just aren't a lot of FCS schools out west. In my opinion, looking long range, Davis and Poly either should go FBS (I-A) or lobby San Diego to go to scholarship football and some schools like Western Washington and/or Humboldt State (anybody for that matter) to move up a division. Then again, with a four-year Division I membership moratorium, there's not a lot of options there, either.

2) In order for the Great West to work long term, San Diego needs to add scholies, which would get the league to the minimum number of teams to qualify for an automatic playoff berth.

So, what are the odds of San Diego going the scholie route? Looks like nobody else is possible due to the moratorium.

Not great. Being a private school, San Diego has pretty high tution($30,000/year), so funding a competitive program in the GWFC would be very expensive for them($2.5M+/year for 63 scholarships). Their previous coach was for the idea, but he's gone now and their AD has stated several times that scholarships are not on the agenda.

Ouch...not good for SOS arguments. That and Davis losing to Western Washington doesn't look good for anyone in the Great West.

Another FCS loss to a lowly D2......

Delta State 27

Jackson State 15

Also Stephen F. Austin losing to Tarleton, who is not a perennial playoff participant in D2, makes ndsu's stronger scheduling argument a little weaker. So I'm guessing ndsu should win by at least 4 TD's then right?

Also, another IAA Southland team Sam Houston St barely beat DII also-ran Angelo State, 17-13.

To be fair, the Southland Conference did have some good victories:

Nicholls St 16, Rice 14

Texas St 38, Cal Poly 35

McNeese St 35 Portland St 12

What will it matter...will you cheer for them if they do?

What? Not quite sure how to reply to that statement.

As you noted, SFA lost to tarleton-not exactly Grand Valley. If NDSU beats them by four or fourty, will it change your opinion of them after the game? A Bison win doesn't really tell us much about them (particularly to Sioux fans). But a Bison loss....

Harvard is private and so is the majority of the "Ivy League." Harvard has high tuition so funding their athletic programs is "very expensive" like San Diego as you describe.

So to answer the first question of the odds of San Diego going the scholie route? It is definately possible. They just dont' call it "scholies" but

So since we seem to be into comparison scores, Before the Sioux play Southern Utah the week, Should we all agree that whoever fares the best against Southern Utah this year is the better team? They will be the only common opponent this year.

...and some say the rivalry is dead.
