Northwood, ND

I just returned from Northwood. My employer allowed around 20 of us to head down and help out. We spent most of the day helping out at the Hospital/Nursing Home. We also went to a few random houses and helped out. It's amazing how much damage can be done in just a few minutes. The people of Northwood will be needing assistance for quite some time. I should also mention that the folks I visited with all seemed to be in pretty good spirits and thankful for the help they are receiving.

My husband and I were in Northwood today and cooked our pizzas for the relief workers and residents. Any of the people we talked to about their home were all in good spirits and said they will get through this. They all feel very lucky to have come out if this alive. Everyone was so nice today and thanked us over and over for coming to make them lunch. Today we made 60 pizzas, and tomorrow we are making another 100 for the supper shift.

Anyone who is looking to help should call the command center at 701-587-6301. They will need our help for quite some time.

This sure puts life in perspective. :glare:

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Grand Forks posted some very interesting radar images here of the Northwood tornado. Because the radar station at Mayville was relatively close to Northwood, debris from the tornado hitting the town showed up on radar. It's described as " a rarely seen debris signature."

Our position at the time of each shot is marked by the red mark. The funnel on the northwood page in the previous post is actually a separate circulation and not the actual Northwood tornado and occurred at ~127Z (8:27pm).

In the 2nd set of photos, the broken piece of a tree that's stuck in the cement side of the building is truly amazing.

The other photo that was somewhat amazing is the flagpole in front of the nursing home or hospital. I have a great aunt that resided there, and it's amazing that the flag pole didn't break. Hopefully the town can rally around that flag pole and it's "bend, but don't break" philosophy.

E-mail sent to UND employees this morning:

UND To Help With Northwood Cleanup; Faculty And Staff Can Help Next Wednesday

The University of North Dakota is assisting the Northwood community in recovering from tornado damage. On Saturday, the UND football team and the Men's and Women's hockey team will help with the cleanup effort. UND's men's and women's basketball teams are also making plans to help with the cleanup efforts.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, faculty and staff may volunteer by riding a UND bus to Northwood for a day of clean-up. President Kupchella has approved paid time off for that day for volunteers willing to aid in this effort. To be granted release time, employees must coordinate with their supervisors who will consider each request before approving the time off. The bus will depart at 8 a.m. from the Ralph Engelstad Arena parking lot and return at 4:30 p.m. If you plan to volunteer, please e-mail Staff Senator Janice Hoffarth at janice_hoffarth@und.nodak.edu or call Staff Senator Kayla Hotvedt at 7-2042 with your name, department name and phone number, and cell phone number by noon on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Volunteers need to wear boots, long pants, and gloves. Rakes, brooms, shovels or hand tools are helpful. Tetanus shots should be up to date. If you need a tetanus shot, please contact your health care provider.

President Kupchella has also approved paid time off for those University employees whose property was damaged by the Northwood tornado, or who have family, or family of an employee
