Olivers Murnieks (2008) of the Sioux City Musketeers had 35 points in 52 games in the USHL as a 16 year old and remains uncommitted. It is possible that he isn't commitment eligible until August 1 2025 since he's a July 2008 and might have only completed his sophomore year of HS in 2024-25. Definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Nice blurb about Brady Martin spending draft day on the farm. Get him on campus for a tractor ride down University.

Sounds like Brady Martin isn't entertaining NCAA schools unfortunately. Cam Robinson mentioned that some schools were trying to court him but he's narrowed it down to either he makes it in the NHL after playing JRs or just goes back to the family farm to work there, so really isn't considering school.

Not surprising. Nashville will get him signed to his ELC within the month

I think Bear was a target until ineligible to enroll in college academically. One of the core credit issues many are having.

That’s what I’ve seen mentioned elsewhere as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on UND’s roster next fall.

Schloss dropping some names for the last two spots...all of which have been mentioned here previously.

The coaching staff has kept its cards close to the vest on potential targets but if they swing big at a top prospect from the 2025 NHL Draft, a few names jump out.

Quote

Three uncommitted right wingers were picked in the first round — Porter Martone (No. 6, Philadelphia), Bill Zonnon (No. 22, Pittsburgh) and Lynden Lakovic (No. 27, Washington).

Several right-shot centers also were selected in the first — Brady Martin (No. 4, Nashville), Jake O'Brien (No. 8, Seattle), Roger McQueen (No. 10, Anaheim), Ben Kindel (No. 11, Pittsburgh) and Braeden Cootes (No. 15, Vancouver).

Caleb Desnoyers (No. 4, Utah) and Jack Nesbitt (No. 12, Philadelphia) are left-shot centers.

Quote

Manitoban and left winger Carter Bear, who went No. 13 overall to Detroit, has indicated to NCAA teams that he intends to play for Tri-City in the WHL this season. Bear's uncle, Darren, played college at UND. He overlapped with Jackson for one season.

After reading this article, it almost seems like it is a first round talent or bust for one of the last forward spots. Most notable players from previous drafts are picked over or have already signed their ELC. There are a couple of uncommitted guys outside of the 2025 draft class but nobody that would be a huge difference maker. Schloss stated that most second round picks in 2025 are either already committed or are already pro in Europe. I do not think they could bring in a guy picked after Cooper Simpson at 79 when Simpson was deferred to juniors for a year. Simpson is not ready for college but in that range of the draft, nobody is really ready to make the jump to UND.

I do not think the pool of players is very large that could come in over some of our other recruits. Especially considering a lot of them are not academically eligible and/or just do not have interest in college hockey. With that being said, I do not think Bryn would go into this blindly. A lot of solid players have chosen schools in recent weeks that typically are unable to compete with UND for recruits. It seems like any forward that is not named Gavin McKenna or Michael Misa is on the table for UND.

Martin isn't interested in going NCAA, Nesbitt doesn't seem like he is either. Martone wants to sign and compete for a spot in camp, but if Briere and Jones think he's better off in the NCAA, he'd probably go to Penn State (which has been rumored).

There seems to be a few guys that just are not interested in the NCAA path, those guys being some of them. It’ll be interesting to see how the next couple of weeks unfold. I do not think Bryn and staff would leave spots open into July if we cannot or will not land any of these guys. There are like fifteen guys that can make a huge difference for us next year, all we need is one or two guys to commit. Hopefully we find out soon.

Martone contenders per McMahon

  • Same schools as McKenna + "some others" - hopefully that includes us.
    • So that would leave it at
      • Penn State
      • Michigan
      • MSU
      • Denver
      • Others
  • Mckenna NIL offers are like alot of us have guessed here. Michigan and Penn state are willing to spend whatever. MSU is throwing around a reasonable amount but they want to keep their dynamic of most players getting an equal share of NIL.
  • Another note for the new NHL CBA that should likely favor college hockey
    • New rule is that all players once drafted will be put on a timer where their NHL rights expire once they are 22 making them a free agent
      • However if the player is in college the NHL team will have their rights until they decide to graduate / leave school for the pros (catch is if the player is older than 22 the rights are only held for 30 days after you leave school then you can become a free agent if you wish)
      • So IE if a drafted player comes in to school at 20 their rights wont expire after their sophomore year, they'll expire once they decided to leave school.
        • Should avoid the case where a player would be a free agent after their sophmore year and they have to say no to 5-7 teams trying to sign them compared to just 1 team.

But they can leave at any time in the year they turn 22, withdraw from school, run out the clock to UFA. I'd have to read into it a bit more, but it'll be interesting to see what it looks like once the new CBA goes into place.

O'Brien just signed his ELC, cross him off the list

Based on being 6'2" and 175 seems like a guy best served for the NCAA in lieu of the CHL to put on weight, but who knows

I think it's just that most Canadians are very NHL/pro focused and many of the guys who went major junior don't have interest in the NCAA after the rule change. If O'Brien has to spend two more years in junior (if the CHL-NHL Agreement isn't amended & he can't play in the A), and then struggles with the transition to pro, it'd be clearer that he probably should have gone NCAA. But he's a really good player, and until then, we'll have to wait and see.

Will be interesting to see if they can’t nail down two more studs from the CHL to fill the forward roster for this fall, if they just go with 14 forwards to have room for more studs next year.
As it stands, if you don’t lose someone after a one and done, you lose James, Strinden, and Rickwood, with Schultz, ONeill, Simpson and Williams probably set to come in, and Pilgrim still in limbo.  Assuming someone like Andrew or someone else not getting playing time transfers out, that still doesn’t leave much room.

Coaches are probably having these conversations to best be able to take advantage of the new recruiting landscape.  Ideally, you don’t want to keep pushing off players and counting on guys wanting to leave, but I definitely don’t envy the coaches having to make these tough decisions and still keep team unity in tact.

Roster management is going to be huge going forward, as you want to have flexibility in having recruits not time out in juniors, or leave because they don’t want to wait longer to make room for stars that won’t be 4 year players.  Definitely going to be a juggling act to keep a good base of players from year to year and still have room for guys that will accept certain roles.

O’Neill may play two years in the Dub…not the worst thing to think about for maximizing his career. Pilgrim will have to age out.

That is the other side of this — the communication with these guys.  I know some thought Schultz might bolt somewhere else to start college sooner.  I agree, a lot of guys would be better off with the slow development model, but we have seen not everybody and their advisors can be objective enough to see that as the best path forward.  Who knows if Cole Spicer’s trajectory would be different if he had played the slow development path.  Hopefully the coaches and advisors can communicate the best interests to the players and have them buy in.

Cole has had his own issues (which I hope have been sorted out). The development path may not have mattered if he didn't get his life together away from the rink
