Choice of conference situation

  1. 1. Which Olympic conference to you prefer, regardless of the monetary situation?

    • Big Sky
    • Slummit
    • WAC - assuming the Montanas, Idaho, and E Wash come aboard and west coast schools leave
    • Other - explain
      0
  2. 2. Which football conference do you prefer - assume all choices are FCS

    • Big Sky - FCS
    • MVFC - FCS
    • WAC - FCS - with the Montanas, Idaho, E Wash and maybe N Colo and Idaho St - maybe FBS later
    • Slummit FCS (new)
  3. 3. What do you think Kennedy envisions?

    • Stay in Big Sky with fewer sports
    • Move to Slummit, but keep football in BSC
    • Move to Slummit, but fb in MVFC
    • Move to a realigned WAC
    • All sports in the Slummit

The XDSU's have spent ten years sucking up to the MVC that it is no secret where they want to go.  When Wichita St and Mo St leave, the XDSU's will put on a full court press to leave the Slummit.  Any UND move would to the Slummit would be absolutely short sighted.  With the XDSU's gone to greener pastures, we would be stuck in the Slummit with the dregs longer term, begging St Cloud and Mankato to join and pissed off our natural flagships allies in the Montanas and Idaho.  A Slummit would be a deadend for us, as there would be no avenue for advancement.  Denver and maybe Omaha could advance because of their media audience, but we'do be sitting with a crappy hand.  We must continue to align with the Montanas and Idaho in sports other than hockey.  USD can join us if they choose, because the XDSU'S are just using them too until they get an MVC upgrade.  A conference move must keep in mind the next possible move, and this board has shown its terrible at chess.

The MVC loses a lot of luster without Wichita State. And if those two schools left (seriously, where in the hell would MSU even go and who would want them?), the balance of power shifts to the private schools (actually 50/50 but a tie is as good as giving them power). What makes you think they want to associate with the XDSU's? If MSU and WSU left, that really tightens up the footprint, what is that they bring to the table that makes them attractive to spread it out that much? They aren't going to bring a ton of fans to Arch Madness or up the conference profile. And SDSU has about as perfect setup as you can get with the Summit tournament in Sioux Falls. Why would they turn their back on that?

Hmmm, given that your post assumes that NDSU will eventually move up to the MVC, why would UND be "stuck" in the Summit? Could UND not also move to the MVC with NDSU? And, again assuming that a move to the MVC for NDSU is possible, isn't now the perfect time for UND to make a move to the Summit with an eye to an eventual move to the MVC?

Aligning with relatively nearby traditional rivals  in the Summit seems like a better choice than sitting on an island 800 - 2000 miles away from your conference mates. A good chess player thinks more than one move ahead.

Mo St will only stick around until Wichita St leaves, as they have an open invite to the Sun Belt.  Creighton wants WSU in the Big East, but don't see that happening.  The American might be interested in WSU.  CUSA might take both, as it can soon split in a couple years and would need more western teams.  Wichita St badly wants to be in a conference with Texas and Oklahoma schools. Mo St and WSU are not long for the MVC, as even WSU Final Four money will be running out soon.

When the MVC loses those two schools, there won't be any pressure to add private schools, except maybe Valpo will get support.  Since there are not many FCS schools to choose from in their territory, Murray St is probably the only school that would have support, but their football isn't good. YSU is a basket case academically, WIU is a basket case basketball wise, and USD has not made an impact in men's basketball.  UNI will be the new power and they would support the XDSU's.  The MVFC must survive for the football schools.

Bison and Jack fans will flock to Arch madness, as they will delude thenselves into thinking it's the Big time and there is beer there.  Sioux Falls will be pissed about losing SDSU, but SDSU will probably have a Holiday tournament to placate them.

Welcome to the new Slummit with UND, Mankato, and SCSU.  It's a lower version of the NCC.

The MVC would not take two ND or SD schools, one from each state at most.

Aligning with schools that have a history of screwing you does not make business sense.  NDSU Presidents and fans would love nothing more than giving us the middle finger after we have made a commitment.

Going to a league that has FBS powers will checkmate NDSU.  That is what UND needs to do.

Kentucky screwed over Louisville for years, even though Louisville had higher basketball revenue. When the ACC gave the Cards an invite, their football greatly excelled, leaving the Cats in the dust.   UND needs to do something analogous to Louisville.

There is zero allure I can see to Missouri State. They are pretty much an outlier within the MVC the way it is. Granted the SunBelt will take pretty much anyone but Missouri State already subsidizes 2/3's of their athletic budget, how are they going to afford anything?

Bison fans don't even drive to Sioux Falls (where there is beer), they aren't going to drive to St Louis for basketball. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

FBS is more affordable than FCS if you are in a CFP conference.  Mo St has more allure than Coastal Carolina, which didnt even have facilities for FBS when  it was invited.

ARCH Madness has more allure than a trip to the Falls, like breweries and street pubs, plus it's mostly on a weekend.  Weekday games are what keep the bizons from Sioux Falls, as who wants to take vacation time in SD in March?.  They only need to couple thousand XDSU fans, as the Illinois and Iowa schools will still be there.  It's not like they need a Frisco crowd.  Think you're the one that's kidding yourself.

At least 3 problems with what you're saying: 1) It's paranoid. No one is out to get UND, 2) There is, of course, no evidence that an FBS WAC is a realistic possibility, 3) Your concern about "checkmating" NDSU is silly (and IMO, the whole reason for your obsession with this topic).

Hatred doesn't work. NDSU and UND need more cooperation with each other not less.

The president of one of them has been publicly told that he needs to work on his collaboration with the other by his boss. How's he doin'?

Speaking of research, Neset said Bresciani’s lack of “teamwork and collaboration” with UND on research initiatives was a third area of concern.

Can't imagine Chicago St still being DI beyond this year.  Chi St had 86 total enrolled freshman, closed it's dorm cafeteria, and shut off its hot water to its dorms, so students have to go to the gym to shower,

The WAC will be down to seven schools and it has to do something soon.

Some comments in today's Live Chat with Argus Leader USD's beat writer, Mick Garry, that UND to the Summit is almost a lock and don't count out UND to the MVFC.

At this point in time, I don't see one happening without the other. UND won't go independent and the Big Sky isn't all that keen on having another football-only member.

86??!? No way, it can't be THAT bad can it?

but yes, if the WAC goes to 7 they will need to do something.
