SWSiouxMN Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 UND took care of business against a hapless Presentation team. Now UND (2-6) will travel down to Cedar City, Utah on Monday to take on fellow Big Sky newbie Southern Utah. Tip off is at 8:30 PM Media: Game will be on BigSkyTV and will be on the UND radio Network (100.3 FM in GF) History: This will be the first ever meeting between the 2 schools About the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (2-6): The T-Birds are coached by Nick Robinson (1st year). Like UND, SUU is new to the Big Sky world after spending the last 15 seasons in the Summit League. Also like UND they do not have a D-1 victory on the season. In the coaches and media preseason poll, they were picked 10th in both polls. SUU has had a couple of good performances this year, but also have thrown in several stinkers as well. They have done a good job in crushing the boards in the past 5 games and they are 2nd in the conference in Rebounds Per Game (38.0, .5 behind Weber). However, they have struggled in shooting the ball, especially behind the arch this year. While SUU does have a couple of nice pieces to their team, it appears it is going to be a little while before SUU makes some noise in the Sky. Did You Know:Jamal Webb of UND is currenty 5th in the Big Sky in Assists and now leads the conference in stealsDespite the teams shooting woes, SUU has 2 players in the top 10 in ppg in Heuir (8th) and Stevenett (10th)SUU Jayson Cheeseman leads the Big Sky in Blocks Per GameLenny Antwi is 6th in the Big Sky in 3 point shooting Key Players: #3 6-2 SR G Damon Heuir (14.0 PPG, 4.3RPG, 3.9TPG, .415 FG%) This Aussie has hops! Watch his rejection on the Big Sky Blog from the San Diego game, that was something else for a 6-2 guard. After a slow start to the year, he has really pick things up and he along with Stevenett have given SUU a potent 1-2 punch. For his size, he is a pretty nice rebounder and if you dont pay attention he might sneak 6,7,8 boards a game. This Aussie will do what he can do get to the rack. The main problem with this kid is he can be a little careless with the ball and his 3 point shot hasn't been the hottest. A high Turnover point guard against the Big Sky's leading steal man? Sounds like a great match up #21 6-7 SR F Jackson Stevenett(13.4 PPG, 5.7RPG, .909FT%, .375 3P%) Their best overall player on the team. He has a good jumper, which he can hit from 3, great rebounder, plays decent D, and has been automatic from the line. He has had games where he has been in foul trouble and has thrown up a couple of clunkers in games this year (0-10 from the field in a 61-52 loss to TCU). Most likely our biggest matchup problem and it would be very beneficial to try and get him into foul trouble early. Need to take him out of the game. #50 6-11 JR C Jayson Cheeseman (6.0 PPG, 2.8BPG, 5.1RPG, .415 FG%) Don't laugh at his name, this kid know his role very well. The clubhouse leader for the Mutumbo award (blocks). He is also a very good rebounder in his own right as well. Uses his big body well to his advantage. He is going to make our guards driving abilities a little bit more difficult. Can't sleep on him on offense or else he can get a cheap 8-12 points. Going to have our work cut out for us on this guy. Wilmer is going to need to actually play up to his 6'10 height to be successful with this kid. Keys to the game: 1) SUU rest or rust: When they play us on Monday, they will have had 13 days of rest. This now plays into the old rest vs rust debate. I think this is something that UND needs to exploit right away. Press the action 2) Injuries: The biggest question is whether Brekke will be good to go on Monday. Having him back would be a major jolt to our bigs and getting a decent rebounder back will help with the point below. 3) Rebounding: Cannot stress this enough, we need to be able to rebound if we are going to have success in this game. If we bring our Hawaii performance on the boards we will more than likely win this game, if we bring our NDSU effort, we will more than likely lose 4) Free Throws: Got to make them. 5) Guards: lets get some pressure on this team to do something on offense. Bury your shots early and often. Our point guards need to play discipline and clean when running the show. 6) Showtime: First conference game of the year. If we are seriously going to challenge, we need to win these games Lets get the conference season started right! The time is nearly over! Quote
NDSU grad Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Even though NDSU generally had a superior team than SUU, the Bison always struggled in Cedar City. I don't know what it is about that trip. Kind of glad they are out of the Summit for that reason alone. Good luck to UND. Quote
NODAK13 Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 What's the word on Huff for this game? Based on what I heard Huff has yet to practice, just doing light shooting, so I'd say he is no where close to playing. He looked so skinny and definatley out of shape after losing 15-20 lbs when I saw him at the NDSU game. Brekke is also more than likely out of this game due to his concussion as he to has not practiced all week and I wonder if he even took any of his exams due to his condition, that may create a problem all by itself. I don't know what it is about that trip. Kind of glad they are out of the Summit for that reason alone. Good luck to UND. Depth is really a key at elevation, especially with it so dry there. So with Huff and Brekke out, this trip will be tough. Cedar City has a higher elevation than Denver (5820 ft for Cedar City vs 5280 for Denver). Flagstaff is at 6920 ft, the highest in the Big Sky. All the others are under a mile, with Grand Forks beating out Sac St and Portland St. Bozeman 4940 Greeley 4680 Pocatello 4560 Ogden 4300 Missoula 3200 ft Cheney 2450 Quote
SWSiouxMN Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 Despite the fact that it sounds more than likely we will be out 2 starters, we still need to win this game. We still have plenty of talent that we should be able to take care of business. I am tired of the road woes. If are seriously going to contend for this thing, its starts on Monday. Antwi, Anderson,Schuler,Webb,Wilmer,Traylor,Allard,Archer,Stockdale,Benton... Its time to ball. Quote

Antwi, Anderson,Schuler,Webb,Wilmer,Traylor,Allard,Archer,Stockdale,Benton... Its time to ball. You nailed it. This is almost a must win even though it is the first Big Sky Game. We need to play this road game like we played against SDSU with the exception of the last shot of course. Who would have thought going into our 9th game based on what the pre-season looked like the list of names above is what we have for our playing roster right now. Basically only 9 players since Stockdale is a walk on and rarely plays. I agree we still have plenty of talent to get the job done and need to get it done. Quote
NODAK13 Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 As in several games already this year, I believe this game will come down to our ability or inability to rebound and we will be without Brekke which really hurts. Their top 7 players are 6'2, 6'4, 6'8, 6'6, 6'11, 6'6 , 6'8 so they have alot of height and size also. Boys you'd better box out tonight and get a much needed road win and our first ever win in the Big Sky. Quote
