Native America Calling

Did anyone happen to catch it? Native America Calling (national Indian radio network) had UND's Eric Enno on as a guest, last Friday, September 5. It was a bit of a rush program, but I myself (David Yeagley), along with Doug George were guests.

Obviously, the program was on Indian mascots, logos, monikers, etc., Elsie Meeks was one of the callers. Other than her, the call-ins were all white women. Now what does that tell you about this issue? It tells me it is a feminist issue. The fact that white female homosexuals are leaders in the anti-Indian warrior image movement should also indicate a lot to anyone paying attention. Jackie Goldberg, the California legislator who tried to make it illegal for any public institution in the state to use Indian names, is a career homosexual (last twenty years, anyway). She talked about her personal life on NPR a couple of weeks ago.

I, as an Indian man, will simply not be told how to be an Indian, or a man, by white female homosexuals. Sorry. This is pushing equality beyond the meaning of the word. This is frustrated tyranny, hate, and prejudice on the part of these white females.

One of the white women, however, thought Indians should simply charge a fee for the use of Indian images. She went into some detail. I've entertained such an idea, but, it would be terribly complex to implement, and then the image wouldn't be worth anything, psychologically. Maybe I'm wrong.

I would agree to a great extent with Dr. Yeagley's comments. However, I would submit that a good number of liberal, ostensibly straight, white males are also involved in this issue. Most trot out the usual reasons for changing Indian names, monikers, logos, etc., e.g., centuries of oppression, racisim, insensitivity, etc. While I certainly won't deny the horrible treatment often inflicted on Indians in the past and present in a number of ways, all of this "sensitivity" smacks of the same paternalism that these same groups often accuse white males of perpetuating.

It's often typical of liberal academics, and pseudo-intellectuals, to hijack a variety of social "wrongs" and tie them to their own agendas, regardless of whether they have actually been impacted by these issues. The fact that they seem more interested in changing school names than addressing more day-to-day issues facing many Indians is either pure cynicism or myopic idealism at their worst.

This recent column from (non-conservative) Clarence Page on the contributions of recently deceased John Ogbu addresses the mentality perpetrated by 'well-meaning' liberals:

Ogbu distinguished between "voluntary immigrants," who came to America with their identity intact because they chose to come, and "involuntary immigrants" (or "caste-like") minorities like U.S.-born blacks, Latinos and Native American Indians, who were descended from American slavery or military conquests.

The latter group he found to be more likely to adopt an "oppositional identity" to the mainstream culture, a defensive posture that often works to doom them and their offspring to a lower-caste social position.

Thanks a lot, Dr. Yeagley, for sharing some of your sentiments on this topic.

I sometimes wonder why feminists are so frickin' concerned about changing a name & avoid issues like runaway alcoholism & other social ills on reservations.

I think categorizing people into groups helps to understand them better. Women on the far left of the Democratic Party are most often feminist liberals. Feminist liberals (redundant, I know :glare: ) want to change the way we think, the words & symbols we use. Why? I'm not sure but I think that to have a successful socialist society one has to strip away ethnic pride/identity in order for multiculturalism to fluorish. The distinctions between black & white, man & woman blur & everyone's equal in a socialist's eyes. Either that or they're really misguided  . All this compliments of political correctness--the most destructive element to ever hit Western democracy.

It would be nice, Dr., if you could share some of your comments from that radio show. I'd like to hear how you countered some of those dimwits.

Thanks again.

Actually Phoniex,

These feminist left wingers want to ring their hand and tell us how wrong we are. You know its the angry, evil, white, heterosexual, repressive, double YY, gun totting, male.

They (the militant liberal feminist) want to persuade us to change our views to their misinformed perspective/side of the story. I always tell them no I don't I have already formed my opinioin and have decided your wrong. I honestly don't time to listen to their garbage. I mean really with hockey, hunting, golf, work what else is there.

Right on, Goon. I agree that the straight white anglo male is being unduly punished & is their primary focus, but everyone who disagrees with their agenda is labeled & scorned, imo.

100+ years ago, Native Americans were forced to live on reservations or die. Now they're being told that they can't even be proud of a harmless symbol (the Sioux name/logo). They have a legitimate right to be pi$$ed after their culture was turned upside down & now they have to face some irrational, angry white women who want to tell them what to do.

BTW, Goon, I like how you listed your priorities: hockey, hunting, golf & then work. Was that in order of favorite to least favorite? :D

Ahh, but many of us will be watching the game in person from our nice cushy seats, not from 1500 miles away on a dish.  :D  :p

Who needs a dish when I've got Internet audio? I'm stylin' & will have the benefit of listening to Hennessy's voice all year long; whereas you will have to endure choice seats in a rockin' arena watching the best team in the country. I pity you... ;)

Phoenix in January. Diggler, I'm having a problem finding all the 10-ft. high snowdrifts. Looks like I'll have to suffer through another "frigid" 80 deg. winter. :p;)
