Our OL really needs to improve over the off season if we want to be anything next year.

We can't get an inch up the middle on a obvious running situation.

Sounds like running up the middle is going to be tough against SDSU. I think we need to see Ziebarth a little earlier today taking it around the edge. Or Smith, might need some screen passes today. Let's hope Danny is on his game today.

I am too, but so are about 125 other FCS fan bases. That doesn’t mean I’m ok with us being mediocre. I realistically won’t be happy until we are perennial top 10 team competing for Championships. And realistically won’t be happy until we win one. Hell SDSU hasn’t even won one yet, and they are one of the FCS football darlings. I hope our next 20 years is better than their last 20 years, because in 20 years if we haven’t won one, it’s a failure. SDSU has been really really good, but until you win it, it’s almost all for not.

Yep. If we win this weekend, it's going to be a long off season of IF'S. Just woulda needed one of those dumb things not to happen and we are in the playoffs. That said I still want to go out with a W. It's going to be a long off season either way, might as well finish with a W.

Thanks for the clarification, couldn't remember for sure. Well Kett as a senior should have been better than Tommy as a Freshman then you'd think. The red zone regression this fall definitely is a concern. Losing Waletzko next fall will certainly not help. Hopefully having the rest of the OL get better will more than offset that, but ya won't know until next September. I would certainly hope we don't have 7 red zone TO's next year though. Sounds like the new kickers should be good. We have to at least get FG's if we don't punch it in for a TD.

Exactly, Freshman Tommy with a good OL 80% > Senior Kett 71%. Sophomore Tommy with average at best OL gets us into the Red Zone 46 times .vs Senior Kett 35 times. Yes this fall once we got in the Red Zone it has been complete crap, but I don't think that is on Tommy (Other than that 1 pick). No ability to run up the middle and TO's is reason for crappy red zone numbers. I don't recall Kett being bad in the Red Zone however. Although yes Kett did love to run backwards and take 10 yard sacks at the worst time, which absolutely killed drives. When you lose 10 yards and loss of a down, that is a drive killer. In Kett's defense though, he had Rudy calling plays, I'm sure he would have gotten us in the Red Zone more without an OC from 1986. I hate to say on the bright side, but getting into the Red Zone 46 times seems pretty damn good. If we get back to a more normal Red Zone conversion we will be pretty good. Easier said than done, but with better OL and hopefully better kicker coming I think we will. 2019: 35 red zone attempts, 33 scores, 25 touchdowns. 71% touchdown conversion. 2020: 25 red zone attempts, 22 scores, 20 touchdowns. 80% touchdown conversion 2021: 46 red zone attempts, 31 scores, 24 touchdowns. 52% touchdown conversion

I think everyone would agree Red Zone has been absolutely horrible, numbers I hope we never see again. Think the two biggest factors are almost zero ability to run the ball up the middle once we get inside the 10-15 yard line. Also I think I saw we have 7 red zone turnovers this year, that is brutal.

I went back and watched Feeney's hudl. He is definitely primarily a passer and looks to pass first which is ok, but he had some nice runs when things broke down. He looks a little quicker/faster than Tommy. Tommy has good pocket presence and can avoid the rush pretty well, but he's not that fast and when he runs and does get out in the open the Defense closes on him pretty quickly. I think Feeney is faster and will be able to make a few more downfield plays with his legs than Tommy when he has the chance. Feeney doesn't need to run 8 -10 times a game. But if he can pull it down and run 4-5 plays a game and be effective at it that will help, just enough to annoy the hell out of the defense and give them something to think about.

Hopefully now he has definitely learned that when you slide, they mark the ball at the very begining when you are just starting to attempt the slide. I think it's twice now that his slide was marked pretty far back and cost us a first down. Seems like the ball should be down when your knee hits the ground when you slide, but pretty sure it is when you just even start the sliding motion.....but man they seem to really mark it pretty far back when he started to slide. He may need to dive in some of those types of important situations when it's close.

So if it could be argued that we may have one of the best teams in our DI Era, is Chaves really going to can that whole staff (which some would like to have happen) that assembled that team? No, that's not going to happen. A couple of those losses are squarely on the coaches for bad decisions, I agree. But two fumbles, and then 0-4 in FG's with our back up kicker is hard to blame entirely on the staff. They aren't going to buy out Bubba's contract IMO. We have him for two more years, then I hope he decides to step aside. It could very well be between Danny and Holinka then, not sure which of those two would make a better head coach. We will have two more years to see how they do. Would be nice to keep Holinka calling plays on defense though, and Danny's mindset of having an open offense for whoever the new OC would be wouldn't be bad. We have a lot of good young players, I'd rather not clean house right now.
