Certainly. Not disagreeing with that at all. The problem here is the lame brain contract extension Jones was given after underperforming with an extremely talented group a couple years ago. Hoopster seems to think he is "right" about Jones being a good coach since he's still here. In reality, the only reason Jones is still here is the inexcusable contract extension he was given, and the athletic department is unwilling and unable to buy it out.

Yet Barnes is fired, and Jones gets to continue "coaching" to the dismay of anyone who knows anything about basketball. Thanks for proving our point.

Correct. The ND logo could become the primary logo, with variations of it used as well if desired. the "ND" could be considered the new nickname as well as the logo. As an example of something similar, Slippery Rock University uses the nickname/logo of the "rock". They seem to get along just fine using part of their school's name, as their nickname, with no punishment or scare tactics from the ncaa.

Is Nodak Electric power cooperative on board with Nodaks? I would hope something a little more inventive could be chosen if going with no nickname is officially ruled out. Any nickname that starts with no, sounds suspect. Nodaks....rejecting daks, or the absence of daks.... If we're going down that road, how about the Nosioux instead? Sioux no no...... No Sioux Sioux!! No daks, no kotas, no Sioux.... no problem.

I would prefer no nickname, however if an animal was chosen, i'd hope for the Fighting Moose. In cheers it'll sound as close to Sioux as we're gonna get. Manitoba's hockey club has a cool looking Moose logo. something similar could be designed. I think the quest for an original animal that has never been used before is only going to yield wimpy, ugly, or otherwise unappealing beasts.

No, that's not what I said or was referring to. People are trying to come up with a nickname that relates to the history or heritage of North Dakota. Rough Riders doesn't. In a different but related vein, I can't imagine spending countless hours and mucho bucks to get all these committees together with distinguished alumni and marketing professionals, and then end up with the local high school's nickname.

Now, what is it that draws people to this name? Is it the dysentery? The Malaria? The Yellow Fever? Maybe it's the tragic comedy of errors their trip to Cuba involved, namely the part about leaving their horses and a 1/4 of their men at home? Is it perhaps the closeness we as North Dakotans feel to volunteer cavalry men from Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas? ND Tourism has done a fine job rewriting history and making people believe the Rough Riders actually had something to do with North Dakota. They didn't. They had a Colonel, from New York, who later became President, who had a cattle ranch here, and made comments about how much he loved North Dakota. That's it. That's the only albeit loose, connection. I would prefer we stay with no nickname. But if a new name is chosen that attempts to represent North Dakota, I would hope it would at least be factual and an accurate representation of our history.
