Crowd, namely students,  are amazing today!  Is it a lot of football players?  They are making a difference for sure.

Yah, about 20-25 football players and very vocal and choreographic--great to see.  I'm guessing Bubba though will have a talk with the ankle grabber thong guy though--I'm sure he did not like that...

It is not negative to point out the weaknesses unless you ignore the strengths.  How about our halfcourt defense slowly becoming a thing of beauty?  How about outrebounding your opponent by more than 2:1?  How about burning every team we play with Dyer's inbounding passes under the basket?  (How about Dyer's passing skills in general?)  How about Smith gaining confidence on offense to go with her already dominant defensive presence?  How about getting the hang of closing out close ones?

Gotta admit I do like Smith's developing confidence (still at times doesn't look so confident).   No doubt though, a big presence in the middle and slowly picking up points underneath.  IMO turnovers are what appear to be what will define the season/result each game. If they can limit them...

Make it 4 in a row for the Women. a 3 point win over UNC. Climbed back to 5th place in the league.  Weber and ISU on the road. Lets make it 6!

I really do like your enthusiasm but my excitement is curtailed.  Yes, it was another win tonight but considering it was at home... It seems like we are beating average teams.  It sure doesn't come easy.  I just don't see us winning many if any games on the road the remainder of the season or winning on neutral court at BSC tourney.   Zhablla (sp?) and Knox have really digressed this season, Lloyd still decent but not what she was her soph and jr seasons, there's no consistent outside shooting threat (Dyer is the only one but is hot and cold), and we just don't have that dual combo-platter inside/outside player (such as a Maddie Buck or Troy Huff).    I make all the home games and it's really tough to watch this team at times. Sure hope they prove this negative Nancy wrong, really!

About injuries.   The level of trust UND has in the NHL as a good steward of drafted players is a big recruiting tool and one that the school takes seriously.  So when one of those players has an injury, the coaches and trainer act on the side of caution, possibly more than some schools.   That may leave them with a short bench at times, but I'd guess it's worth the long term benefit.

You make a real good (but not so obvious) point Burd.  I'm guessing it helps that UND has so much depth, makes them more inclined perhaps than many teams not to rush injured players early.

But...but...but...Sandy won that natty five years ago!  I mean, nevermind the 8 out of 15 seasons with a .500 or worse record, 8 seasons with 16 wins or less (and cruising for a 9th by the looks of it), and a winning percentage of .503, he won a natty once and that's all that matters.

I imagine that could well be the same argument Eaves would put forth.  Well put, MafiaMan.  Gee, just can't help but wonder why the Flyers picked up Haks and not Sandy, Dean. Eaves,...  I mean the guy couldn't win a nattie to save himself.   : -)

    2-0 UND

we had better play better tomorrow night.

Yah, we had better.  Starting to sense the Fri night blues.  Lost to Neb-O at home, blow huge lead and tie lowly 8th place CC, and tonight struggle to get past lowly 7th place W Mich.  Yah, I know we're lacking some firepower with the injuries but come on guys, it takes us nearly a full game to score against a porous defense?  It's a win but spoiled we are I guess.

Right...if you think he's like Rau in any way you're crazy. He doesn't noticeably stir stuff up like Rau at all. Not even a little bit. It was just Wisconsin frustrated because they were getting their @ss beat and he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They had another text book check from behind that was only called a 2 minute boarding minor because (one can only assume) they had already had a player kicked out for it. That one wasn't on Novak. Same stuff happened last year against Wisconsin, also resulting in them getting a couple of suspensions.

I do agree both hits were suspension worthy, but I still think Cavallini's should be getting a lot more notoriety for how dangerous and vicious it was. It's disgraceful. He purposely launches himself into Novak from behind to drive him head first into the boards. If you haven't seen it and want to see for yourselves: http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/big-ten/2016/1/25/10829316/big-ten-suspends-wisconsins-aidan-cavallini-and-eddie-wittchow

Wow, just viewed both clips and I'm no Goofers apologist (actually a hater) by any means but those were bad hits.  I actually thought the one at center ice was the most vicious.  I don't know anything about the Goofer player's style of play/reputation but even if one stirs up something, those hits are way out of control.

Ticket sales for the conference tournament in Reno are not good - downright disappointing - but it's early.

I'm no hoops junkie/guru but if you're a low/mid major conf or not a geographically close proximity conf (e.g. Summit League the bison are in where I believe the tourney in Sioux--can I say that?--Falls draws well) I gotta think if you're not at the home court of the top conf seed then attendance will be lacking woefully if at a non-conf team city.  No different than at many neutral sites for NCAA hockey region tourneys.

Too bad he couldn't get an NFL team to sign him. He was a great player in college and the CFL.

Yah, that he was.  Dressler signs on with the Blue Bombers.  I'm thinking it's a good signing for them and him.

  10. Yah, scientific poll it certainly ain't.  But face it, with the divide between the top two teams and the rest in the NCHC this season, even with a very neutral polling field it would come down to either the Sioux or the Clowns (the "suspense" is 3rd thru 8th).

Yes, Jones is a genius. He has them playing against Big Sky teams. They should have beaten both of those teams this weekend.

Hey, I'm as big a Jones basher as there is but gotta tip one's cap when Fighting Sioux hoops wins conf games on the road, regardless of the opponent.   Unlike most seasons, he must be doing something right latterly (at least the past 5 - 6 games) save for a couple of choke jobs to ndsu and mont. Heck, ndsu should of never lost (at least not on paper) that football game at home nonetheless (never mind on the road) vs the coyotes so surprised you don't know better.

Because Thompson's mistakes were the most glaring and one was costly.

I thought LaDue and Poolman also had a tough time as well out there.

The overall UND defensive effort struggled.

Vaunted Sioux defense not good tonight, along with our two goalies.  Sioux need to put the effort forth like in 1st period and last 5 minutes of 3rd period.  Effort and mentality are so critical to good results in hockey and there's no reason it should take a 1 goal deficit to a bottom feeder (albeit a much improved CC team over last 4 weeks, no doubt) to kick start that drive from all those NHL draft picks.

2 in a row for the women, coming away with a 63-56 win over NAU.

    Next up, SUU

Yah, but man they made it tough considering at home and against a not very good team.  Very frustrating team considering they were picked to finish 2nd in BSC.  Dyer not good tonight, she missed like 3 or 4 three pointers with one air ball off by 2 feet.  She also drove the lane 3 or 4 times wildly in lots of traffic, in playground manner. Luckily once or twice she drew the foul but way out of control sometimes.  If not hitting long (at times she can get hot) she's a detriment.  Like her "balls" sometimes but she's gotta play under control.  Hope the young lady is healthy, heard a few folks say she looks "gaunt" (correct word/sp?).  Looks like Lloyd is back, back to back game with near or at 20 pts.  Good to see it.   Big Red and Lil Red, continue to disappoint following decent past few season.  Hope that changes for them and for the team.  Something still not right with this team, can't put finger on it.

I was curious about the Tyler dig, too. Very solid player at both schools, who made tough personal decisions based on family matters.

Tyler was a real tough loss, seemed like a damn decent guard and both a heady player and person.  Yep, from what I understand it was simply a family decision for the move.

Obviously, Drake being healthy and playing is the ideal option, but I think Gersich looked good up on that line after Drake went out.  It's almost as if there was an extra level of effort on his part in order to play on par with Boeser and Schmaltz.

So nothing out there for sure yet on Cags injury or have I just missed it?

do we need a new goalie??? bringing up old topics!!!!!!

Huh?  Yah, an old topic but certainly not timely.  There was a question coming into this season with Zane having left and no experience to speak of but that question thankfully quickly went away.

When either SCSU, Omaha, or UND has played one another this season they have all ended in a split so far.

I think SCSU is on a decline, having lost to the U18 team, losing to CC, and (officially) tying Duluth....going 2-1-1 in the last four "official" games, against not that good of competition.

I'm certainly no St Clown apologist but on a decline, respectfully not so sure about that just yet.  From the looks of it the U18 team and their record (believe they're winning at like a .750 to .800 clip), losing to them is nothing to be ashamed of for a college team this season.  Also, tying Duluth is not so bad either in light they're ranked like #17 in the nation and were picked to win the NCHC.  Yah, the  Sioux swept Duluth there via two shut-outs but certainly not "dominating" landslide wins, more so it was our hot goalie and strong def both nights.  Admittedly, St Clown losing to CC not good but then we lost 3-1 at home earlier this season to lowly Little 6 member Wisco and had two ties with lowly Bem (man, give them credit though, they sure play us tough every year) and Maine so on any given night.....I sure hope the Husky dogs are on a decline but let's wait a few more games to make that prognosis.

That's your opinion, and it is probably in the distinct minority outside of NDSU. I would take a D1 hockey title over an FCS football title any day. It is a much bigger deal and the athletes are certainly at the top of the sport. There has never been a Bison football player who was an NFL superstar and probably never will. On the other hand, the NHL is littered with college stars (roughly 1/3 of all NHL players, 1/3 Europeans and 1/3 Canadians from Major Juniors) that we see regularly at the REA, including many former UND players who are more famous than any former Bison football player--Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise, Matt Greene, Travis Zajac, TJ Oshie, Troy Murray, Jon Casey, Drew Stafford, etc. etc. Please don't try and compare a JV title to a D1 hockey title.

Great pont.  Here's another point:  Craig Bohl (?) wins 3 straight div 1-AA natties (that's impressive) and leaves for "bigger and better" things to coach at..... lower ladder FBS Wyoming.  Hakstol leaves one of the top 3 or 4 hockey programs nationally to coach at.....NHL's Philadelphia Flyers at the professional level.

i remember watching the sdsu game a couple years back in brookings...we jumped out to a huge lead...twenty or more or something...even with a huge lead jones was jumping around waving his arms yelling screaming...the sdsu coach just sat back and remained calm and coached his team back into...und messed up something at the end and und lost... jones was still jumping and swearing and maybe even got t'd up  i can't remember...i do remember we lost the game and from that game on my opinion on jones has soured and a few "good" wins hasn't changed much with me this year...

Players played well most of game, near end of it they didn't and I feared or even knew it was coming (choke job).  The way it has continued on and on repeatedly it's gotta rest on the coach.  Yah, refs did not help at all with some bad calls and some bad non-calls but not scoring in the last 4 min comes down to execution and coaching and sorry, but you can't fire/release the whole team, its gotta be the coach.

So...as a mankato fan, I don't get to see much of the NCHC other than the series against UNO earlier this season. I'm just curious about the style of play that is being used right now in the WCHA, and I suspect college hockey in general. It's been bothering me all year, but the clutching, grabbing and interference was painful to watch this last weekend. The league has something like 15 1-1 ties this year.

I know a few years ago that it was a "poin of emphasis" to try to eliminate the obstruction/interference penalties, but it seems as bad if not worse than its ever been.

Is this a league by league thing or is it happening everywhere?

Bale 31, did anyone here ever respond to you?  I'm no great hockey mind but I don't think it's as bad in NCHC as you make it sound like it is in the WCHA (15 1-1 games, wow).  I would have to say it's better than it was 3-4 years ago (I'm speaking WCHA when the Sioux were of course in it then along with MN State).
