  1. He won't and has publicly stated so multiple times. Terrible strawman argument.

The reason a new nickname needs to be chosen is because the majority of those that want no nickname prefer that so they can continue using Fighting Sioux unofficially. If that's not a direct violation of the settlement agreement (debatable) it is certainly against the spirit of it.

I respectfully disagree.  At least w/o a new nickname/logo we can't possibly offend one person...can we?!

  2. Let's face it:  the "no banner" argument, though understandable, is an emotional one, not an analytical one.

Gotta agree, spot on.  I'm very frustrated that Hak ain't won at least 1 natty but at the  same time I'll defend his success year after year and challenge anyone to name a coach to bring in who might possibly get better results (and that ain't just winning a natty) if we fire him Hak.  I honestly can't think of one.

  3. I'll just post this in ref to Hak's coaching performance over the past 11 seasons (since it was written LAST season I updated it to reflect for the past 11 seasons), written by Dave Berger.  I thought he stated the case in support of Hak very well.  Obviously if your only focus is on winning a national title (go ahead and get Eaves to coach us then but he's not my choice) then we could argue 'til we're blue in the face.

"Aside from BC, ND, and Min, no other school has earned more than 2 Frozen Four bids in the past 11 years , and Dave Hakstol has done it 7 times. Yes, I understand that Jerry York (BC) has also brought his team to 6 Frozen Fours in that time span, and has won 3 in the past 11 years (2008, 2010, 2012), but no one is saying that Dave Hakstol is a better coach than Jerry York (at least, they won’t until he wins a national title or two). But does that make him second-best in the country? Third? Any time someone brings up the idea of “firing Hak”, my question is “and who’s your replacement?” In other words, it had better be good, because Hakstol has been excellent."

  4. The 2007 team was not a one-line team, the D-O-T line was simply their best.  They had good to great players from top to bottom that year, just like most years in the Hakstol era.

I would say last year's team did overachieve and I do think that 0.6 second loss to the Rodents was a bad bounce, a one in a million shot that just happened to go in.  So I am not too critical of how last year ended.  My main beef is with some of the Frozen Four debacles during the mid to late 2000's.

And lastly, back in 1997, Blais took a sophomore dominated UND team to the National Championship.  And in 2015, he has taken a freshman and sophomore dominated Omaha team to the Frozen Four, just two wins away from their first National Championship.  So youth isn't always an impediment to success in March and April.

Agree on your point about Omaha's young team and in F4 just two games from a Natty; no, youth ain't always an impediment to success come spring.  A writer out of Madison a month ago following a Badger's asst coaches outburst at their fans (frustration with the Badger's historically bad season) praised UND in fact for winning the conf title and advancing in the NCAAs back several seasons ago with generally an under classmen dominated team.  The asst coach was trying to fault the fans in Wis for not understanding what they (coaches) were doing and said they were having a bad season cus they lost a ton of seniors and had early departures (true).  However, the writer challenged that assessment and gave examples of other teams that didn't necessarily have to accept challenging for a natty one season with an older team and then totally fall off the radar (Wis) the next season.

  5. The band will learn anything Dr Brooks and Tammy asks them

Why were farmers who settled in the Great Plains called sodbusters?

'' already exists. Would you like to merge '' into it?

Ahh, Badlands from Darkness on the Edge of Town album (late 70s), arguably Springsteen's finest.  I'm starting to like both Badlanders and Sodbusters, they're both growing on me and seem to fit the criteria put out for selecting a new name.

  6. So, with 4 games  remaining I believe is the Wild guaranteed a spot in the play-offs or mathematically is there still a chance (albeit, remote?) they could miss out?  I know they have their last 3 games on the road vs good teams so should there be any anxiety?

  7. Please elaborate. This sounds like unequivocal BS to me. I can think of loads of talent Izzo has had.

Agree stoneySIOUX.  As a Big10 hoops power, he's had talent at Mich State just like admittedly Hak has had at UND.  Both coache's admittedly have had seasons with lesser talent than in some others and that's when they've shown their mettle and carried the team further than most anticipated/expecte.

  8. My first choice would be

    North Dakota

    Big green

    Nodaks

    Force of the north

    I would settle for:

    Coyotes

    Bluegills

    Combiners

    Honkers

    Harvesters

    Mallards

    Tornados

    Walleyes

    Nokotas

    Badlanders

    Roosters

    Mustangs

    River Cats?

  9. THIS^^^^

That and he values every possession. However, they have become a more up-tempo team to go along with their great defense.

They have become a fun team to watch, I hate to admit.  Duke vs Wisconsin, my worst nightmare. Here's hoping for another good game Monday.

I thought I saw Wis averaged like 7.5 turnovers per game this season (incredibly had just 1 in a game vs Iowa), which is very disciplined hoops.  And to think Bo Ryan did not start coaching at D-1 level (was at D-II I think for many years) until he was 51.

  10. I haven't commented much on this topic, but I submitted my idea today as well as many others will.  I have enjoyed all of the ideas I've seen on this board, but mine was different than any on here.  I suggested Green Machine.  My rationale was that it ties in our engineering program with the history of railroads in ND.  Could be a cool Soo Liner logo associated with the name as well, similar to the Purdue Boilermakers, which would integrate the memory of the old nickname a little bit as well.  May be dumb to some people, but I thought I would share.

Not dumb IMO.  The Cin Reds pro baseball teams, especially in the 70s when they won at least two WS, were unofficially known as the Big Red Machine (T Perez, G Foster, P Rose, J Bench, J Morgan, C Geronimo, D Conception,...).

  11. Not exactly Hak vs Blais thread subject matter but partially is at least.  A certain coach's team has not won a natty since 2000, has appeared in consecutive double digit NCAA tourneys,  while he's taken that team to 7 NCAA tourney semi-final/final appearances.  Fire Hak....., wait, it's the very successful Tom Izzo (who ain't going no where for the moment, at least if not on his own accord)!

  12. mediocre money for 3-4 years, a signing bonus that basically gets you a downpayment on a middle-class house after taxes and agents...doesn't seem worth it...get a meteorology degree and a natty, then be the local weatherman hero for the next 40 years...or go be a producer for Vaalers...great life is available if you stay...

Spot on.  I'd rather be big man on campus playing in front of large crowds vs riding a bus and playing in front of smaller crowds.

  13. I'm 50-50 on Zane. UND holds such a special place to him because of his grandmother, and that guy goes by the beat of his own drum. I would not be the least bit surprised to see him back in net next fall.

Agree.  I'm friends with a Ralph worker who has inside sources and says Zane is back next year.  Besides Boston's decent goalie situation, goalies can play well into their mid-30s so thus not the rush to leave.  I could be wrong though.

  14. I used to be at the front of the line in criticizing him; but I've come to realize that his personal success is dependent on how well some college kids execute, so I've mellowed out quite a bit in this regard. But I also acknowledge that he does have an obligation in his field as a coach to succeed at the highest level. I've just filed down my fangs a bit & tried to find a happy medium between "the sky is always blue" apologists & those who think he needs to win a natty every year.. But that won't stop me from spewing venom at the tv on 04/09 if it warrants it ... :  )

I like what you said.  I look at it as a pool player is the one playing, it's on him to make the shots, so not a fair comparison with a coach.  A hockey coach can only recruit and coach, he doesn't actually play though but he gives them the opportunity to get there.  Hakstol has done that brilliantly, in fact 7 times in 11 years in the FF.  That's pretty damn impressive.  If it was the NHL and not one and done, he would have two natties.

  15. Warriors.  Easy tie-in to Air Force Base, veterans who have graduated from the university, while having a tie to the previous nickname for the 'No Name' crowd.

Uh, not that I agree, but I can see Warriors being tied to Native Americans (not that it's a word unique necessarily to NA)  and thus UND not being too comfortable with it for PC reasons.  Silly stretch I know but I can see it happening.

  16. I am actually glad they added the description option where you can tell them why you choose the nickname, like for me I put since there is no DI team with the name, plus with the GFAFB, and UND's aviation program Jets could be a good name.

I like Predators for it's double meaning.  One, it recognize UND's nation's leading unmanned aviation program/AF's unmanned mission at GFAFB.  Two, it recognizes the only real predators (and guess who that was, wink-wink) of the bison on the plains.  I do like Jets or Flyers too though.

  17. Rankings came out for the top 200 girls basketball players for the class 2015 for the 5 state area(North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa). All 6 of our recruits are ranked. Klabo(28), Freiji(34), Haas(43), Morton(50), Ascuncion(61), and Boike(77). Looks like a nice class. USD has 1(24) on the list. SDSU has 4 on the list(7), (36), (48), and (69). NDSU has 1(24) on the list.

    Wow, impressive for UND.

  18. Ortega's a diving, showboat punk. Easy to root against, not sure I'd like him even if he was wearing green and white. (For the record, wasn't a big fan of the Rocco experiment)

That said - the winning coach of one hockey team has less impact on the game then the zamboni driver or penalty box door-opener. Hakstol and Blais are both great coaches, and internet threads speaking in absolutes about this kind of stuff make me think some people have never actually played a game involving 10-20 other players, officials, and a bouncing ball/puck of some sort.

    Spot on.

  19. Not sure where to put this comment. Watching the Denver Providence game late, Leleggia just hit a Providence player but got him in the head cuz his head was down, got a 5 min major. Now how are gou spose to hit a guy with his head down without getting a major, thats gonna show players to skate with your head down and act hurt if your hit. Its frustrating cuz its putting the resposibilty of the guy with his head down in the other players hands

He could of lowered just a hair and hit him in the shoulder or chest, couldn't he?  He had a good look going in and appeared to target the head (albeit, head was down, but you're talking maybe a half-foot) despite having a few steps to adjust his hit.  May disagree but college puts the burden on the guy laying the hit, not the guy with the puck.

  20. Well, playing devil's advocate (and in defense of geaux_sioux), the Sioux could of lost to St Cloud 1-0 if you recall how the fat dogs scored their only goal very early in the first period.  Face-offs may seem nit-noid in the big picture, but that's how we gave up our lone goal.  But overall, yes, great effort by the boys.     4 STRAIGHT = 8

  21. Where's the high-end facility?  The Betty is nice, but its not a "high-end" facility.  Go ahead and shoot me down now!

Agree the Betty ain't the Ralph and no video board but have you seen, for example, the Sacramento State gym? I don't think I'm exaggerating, it looks no bigger than and similar to EGF Sr High gymnasium.  There's a few others like that in the  Big Sky from what I've seen on webcast.
