I think the prime driver here is the fact that UND talked a good game, soliciting employee input and then devoting substantial capital resources - and prime square footage - to a food-service facility in its then-crown jewel construction project which, due to a bizarre set of circumstances, is apparently now going to sit idle and collect dust. And UND isn’t always known for making prudent fiscal decisions. [cough, cough] Ray Richards [cough]. And sometimes those decisions come back to bite them. [cough] Golf course reopening and reconditioning costs, years of revenue and good will lost [cough] Sorry…must have got something caught in my throat. Maybe I should seek a qualified Music Therapist to assist in my recovery. Anyway, on-site food service ought to be viewed not as a cash cow, but a loss leader. It’s a perk…a service provided to students and employees, and as such it won’t always turn a profit. And taking it away will almost always gin up some anger that vending machines cannot completely resolve.

Considering the other sites under consideration (including the old med school) were within a stone's throw of the Memorial Union and/or walkable (in nice weather, at least) to full-service dining in Wilkerson, and the letter to the editor is about food service availability on campus, I'd say that the Gateway location is indeed remote. The two Johns (i.e., Jimmy and Taco), though each within walking distance, aren't exactly going to be much more than occasional stops. Unless people really, really like Oles. Related but unrelated...the persistent lack of campus-adjacent dining, shopping, and entertainment options at UND is remarkable. Two strips at REA that I would call moderately useful, at best (I'm guessing MidcoSports doesn't get much walk-up traffic), and Suite 49 has been shuttered over the years more than it has not. Basically forces students to get in their cars and drive (or rely on buses/Ubers) for even the most mundane of tasks. Maybe it's time to kick BNSF out of town, do some intense surface remediation, and develop some of that land to benefit campus. And that would immediately save the tens of millions of $$$ slated for the 42nd St underpass.

One of those "Everybody gets on the JumboTron" kind of days.

TIL that the Sack City sign is not a permanent fixture at the Alerus. Maybe we need a back-up: SACK CITY SIGN 0 1 SACKED BY WEATHER

This is kind of funny. I mean, they did choose the most remote location possible for the med school. https://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/letters/7279099-Letter-It’s-unconscionable-that-the-UND-School-of-Medicine-has-no-food-service-options I suppose if hunger strikes, there's always the anatomy lab.

Vaccine zealotry is ugly.

Northside has moved into the former Suite 49/Albatross building. Nice upgrade. Paved parking!

IAMSo excited to learn more about this. Hope the company has a good Pedigree.

The North Columbia realignment between the overpass and 6th has been on the books for years. The roadwork carried on for more than a month after the fall semester began at UND. It's November and there are still no permanent stoplights at either University or 2nd. This means multiple lanes sharing a single traffic light suspended overhead, and no protected turns in any direction, despite turn lanes aplenty. Sad.

The visual looks like it should have been crickets, but the arena mics were well placed to find the PSU fans. Lotsa green in the lower bowl for the TV viewers.

Oh my. Jake Brandt's shirt looks like something in which an order of fish and chips might be served.

Budget thrill ride (a/k/a Allegiant) screwing with the GFK market. https://www.grandforksherald.com/lifestyle/travel/7257713-Allegiant-Air-abruptly-cancels-all-flights-in-Grand-Forks-during-month-of-December Delta has to be thinking KA-CHING! Which is fine, BUT...this would be the perfect time for Delta to restore GFK service to something closer to pre-COVID levels. Not sure if anyone's tried booking lately since life got back to normal-ish, but 3 flights a day is just crap for connecting, and consistently super-full CRJs are just blecch.

At those prices, may not need the canopy over the visitor tunnel.

Overall very good. Excellent service. A little pricey, but the real takeaway is to plan ahead. Arrived early - 20 minutes after open - to a 30 minute wait. Not a lot of seating, as the floor plan is dominated by two large bars. We'll go back, for sure. GF is so starved for good food that any decent concept is going to thrive. PRO TIP: Spring for the churros.

Hindsight is 20/20, right? As I saw it, the OT shot by Sanderson was on net, and could have just as easily been caught and frozen, or caromed away from defenders altogether. Instead, it fortuitously deflected cleanly off the goaltender's chest, and right to a waiting defenseman. The 2nd defenseman alertly gestured to the 1st in the direction of the advancing 3rd, and a long pass was successfully executed. A game-winning, head's up play. Did I miss something, or is there an unwritten rule in 3x3 hockey about shot angles and dump-and-change? Were UND's other skaters changing, or out of position on the play? Is the puck carrier any less responsible if he carries in, tries to circle behind the goal, and is stripped by a defender? Once he is committed inside the dots, it's not like he can carry back out, and if he's alone his options are very limited. Maybe tie up the puck in the corner and wait for help? Not trying to be combative here...just trying to understand the criticism. As someone else noted above, 3x3 just begs fluky plays.

Cranes back in the air this week. Of course, it appeared to be a small crane assembling a larger crane. But, still...

Meh, every campus has its landmarks, and every AD has his/her pride-and-joy facilities. I doubt very much that it's much more than a whistle stop...maybe it's just first because of how the campus is laid out. Or maybe an athletics lackey gives the same, exact tour to every sport's recruits. Show me a recruit who gets photographed in a classroom, or a lab.

I didn't know there was an option.

As is often the case, Congress needs to act. When they don’t, the executive and judicial branches abuse the separation of powers until you can hardly recognize the American ideal underneath. Employee status for purposes of unionization, collective bargaining, etc. is one thing, but the NLRB has historically not exercised the type of power they are threatening to wield here, with agency action against the NCAA, conferences, and public schools. And I’m not sure that student-athletes yet understand - or will like - all that’s coming, if this erosion continues to its logical end. Regardless of your political affiliation or views on student-athletes, this should scare you. A single political appointee (a lawyer…not even a department head) has just made substantive federal law and jeopardized college sports with the stroke of a pen. By fiat. I believe in amateurism, but it’s not sustainable if we don’t agree across-the-board to treat college sports as the unique creature it is. Exemption, or extinction. And having read the recent Supreme Court case, I think I know where this is headed.
