  1. Would everyone please stop suggesting old und coaches and former players as potential applicants!!! Thats how we got here in the first place! Holy crap! If we are going to be a division I program that starts with division I experienced coaches.

    this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. The balance of the season cannot ride on ONLY the arms of two freshman quarterbacks. The playbook needs to use more than just Miller out of the backfield. There was not one single carry by another UND running back in the whole 60 minute game. Why weren't Shaugabay, Sparks or Garman given the ball once between the 3 of them? That puts too much of the game on the arm of the freshmen quarterbacks. 30 some yards on the ground out of the backfield isn't even an attempt at a balanced attack. Take some pressure off the quarterback and at least try to establish a second dimension of offense. Even the Packers cannot ride Rodgers' arm a whole season, they did get some help from Starks, Kuhn and Jackson the year they won the Super Bowl.

  3. reading what 4life wrote, i came away with a feeling that he is expressing a frustration with the acceptance of 5 and 6 football seasons, frozen four appearances without titles, etc as the way it is for the team formerly known as the Fighting Sioux.

The loss of the proud nickname, the destruction of the home of the national championship hockey teams, the acceptance that DI is just too tough for UND to expect excellence and championships, even conference championships, has become the norm for Kelley and Faison and many of the followers of UND athletics... while you may not agree with how it is written, I think the point needed to be made.

a little older than 4life, i graduated from UND the last year Rube Bjorkman was the hockey coach - the hockey team was not a winner. On the other hand, Dave Gunther led strong winning basketball teams, Jerry Olson & Gene Murphy were consistently in the fray for NCC titles. These teams did build a foundation for the athletic department, because it was building a winning tradition that attracted superior athletes with winners' attitudes.

Then along came Gino and the hockey team turned around - second to Minnesota in the national championship, followed by a national championship and 2 more over the next few years . The tradition was being established. Blais carried through with two more national titles by the turn of the century. At the same time, the football and women's basketball teams were also making their national title runs.

Now, excuse makers are saying the coaches need more time to build their trophy case teams, or that the stars move on to the pro ranks too soon, or that the ... (you go ahead and name it, we've all read them many times)

While national championships are hard to win, the AC has managed to win 2 in a row (yes, Hayduke, they are not THE national football championship) and look like a good bet to bring home #3 next January. They just won a nationally televised game against the defending Big 12 champion (as in the conference that is the home of Texas football). Meanwhile the UND football team has 7 home games this year, and of the 4 road games, 2 of them are against perennial bottom half of the conference teams. Even with freshman quarterback(s), this team should be able to make the playoffs. If Mussman continues to play quarterback roulette and misses the opportunity he has this year, it is time to find someone who can lead the team over the hump. He appears to be an outstanding recruiter, but can't bring the game to the field.

I don't follow the hockey team as closely, but it is time to close the deal there too. Hakstol, is also an outstanding recruiter, but seems to have difficulty making in-game adjustments when the opponents have an answer to the plan he has developed going into the game.

As Larry the Cable Guy says, it's time to "git 'er done".

  4. Below is select teams from the BSC and points for, points against and differential comparison.

    Team PF PA Diff

    MSU 435 274 161

    EWU 472 356 116

    Cal Poly 440 284 156

    N Ariz 348 260 88

    Montana 348 294 54

    UND 369 380 -11

    1) Buy or Sell UND will have a differential of +75

    2) Buy or Sell UND will have a differential of +100

    3) Buy or Sell UND will lead the league in + differential this season.

    considering UND was 342 270 +72

against teams not from Eastern Washington or Montana State, keeping those two games closer would make #1 a buy.

considering those two teams are on the 2013 schedule for UND again, #2 is still a sell,

but Idaho State and UC Davis are on the schedule this year and Cal Poly isn't, so #2 could be a buy with a better defense.

unless the defense much much much better, #3 is a sell

Buy or Sell: Sparks actually gets an opportunity to log playing time this season

  5. Totally deserved. Was at the 19th hole when I did that. Two shaaaay ! I don't claim to be a writer though as I just fix tractors

can't resist the temptation to be the spell check police since you attack Goon for his grammar/spelling

it's not two shaaaay, it's touche'

back to watchmaker, his/her style was very similar to almostheavenin2011. anticipating another return under a new moniker... :whistling:

  6. So . . . are they adding scholarships, or forcing the lower FBS conferences down in scholarship? They won't separate themselves when all 119 teams are spending on scholarships at the same level in today's scenario, they just won't. Where are they drawing the split, and what is their logic for the split . . .scholarships, spending level, fans in the stands?? Is there a clear way to split?

SEC, B1G, B12, P12, ACC ||| AAC, CUSA, MWC, MAC, SBelt

Not a very clean break when you have schools in the bottom five outspending some in the top 5. It would be nice if the 13 conferences in FCS would split too (there actually is scholarship differences in FCS), but that doesn't do much to unite the division or form a successful championship. The bottom conferences, which want to be in the highest level of NCAA football, will go kicking and screaming from the table.

Maybe it will come down to paying the football players the cash 'assistance' stipend that was floated a few months back. Those in the top BCS division pay the stipend and those who don't are in the FCS, with no change in the number of scholarships...

  7. Why would he have gotten fired for winning a conference championship? Are you thinking of the season before that?

The context seems to mean that he is referring to the 2012 season.

  8. Meanwhile, back on topic:

Buy or sell this recruiting class getting a big bump by the IPF being underway. No longer is it just a plan for 'the future'.

Sell. Too late to impact this year's recruiting class - it is already on the books. 2014 Class is another story - Buy that one.

Buy or Sell - Defense gives up more yards rushing than passing.

  9. But having a chance to win against a team like MSU and EWU is better than no chance in hell like top 10 FBS teams (Bama, Oregon, etc.).

So you would rather get your collective butts handed to you by a team you should be able to compete with than by a team that is supposed to soundly outscore you? If you get beat by the best, you can walk out with your head up knowing, as Ira said, that you left it all on the field.

  10. Although I've watched pieces of the last couple of games via stream, it just struck me that the Great West tournament is being played in Newark NJ. I guess if you live in NYC, Newark is west.

yeah, if you are from NYC, anything past the Hudson is "the west"

  11. Here is an article by Boise State beat writer talking about the re-structuring of Division 1 football: http://www.idahostat...bsu-fit-in.html

It appears that the question of how the split will be made may come down to paying the 'student' athletes a stipend:

"The fact that the bottom half of the FBS can't afford the cost of attendance stipend isn't a good reason not to do it," Barnhart wrote.

I agree with Barnhart's premise: Student-athletes should receive a cost of attendance stipend, particularly when coaches are being paid multi-million dollar salaries.

But the stipend issue is just another one driving a wedge between the Power Five (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12) and the Little Five (Mountain West, American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference and Sun Belt).

  12. so, Herd, Bison06 or some of the other Bison posters on the siouxsports site...

If offered, would NDSU accept an offer to join the Big Sky?

Would NDSU be willing to move without SDSU, if for example,an offer went to Denver (giving BSC 14 football with Poly & Davis & 14 Olympic with Denver & Idaho to go with 12 all sports members)?

Again, if offered, would NDSU, SDSU and USD all leave for the Big Sky and abandon Omaha?

What would the pulse be for an NDSU move out of the Summit at this point?

  13. UND plays against some pretty tough competition in the Big Sky!

    Congratulations Damian.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- It's unanimous: Portland's Damian Lillard is the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

Lillard, the sixth overall pick in last June's draft out of Weber State, led all rookies with a 19-point scoring average. He also averaged 6.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds, playing in all 82 games this season.

ESPN: Damian Lillard named top rookie

  14. Reading BIsonville is just hilarious. Some SDSU fans there are saying that UND fans are the ones making up issues about how the Summit has major problems, yet these same SDSU fans weren't even aware that the Summit is already in the grace period for baseball (and the Summit has to have six full DI teams in baseball and men's soccer to continue as an NCAA conference, as well as seven DI full members).

So if Oakland is going to the Horizon for next season ...

the the Summit will be down to four DI baseball teams (NDSU, SDSU, WIU, and IPFW, as Omaha won't count for two more years), which means ...

The Summit's grace period for baseball becomes forfeited, as no conference can fall two teams below the minimum and be eligible for a grace period ....

Which means the Summit becomes officially defunct in the eyes of the NCAA after July 1st.

Which means by July 1 the Summit has to either offer NJIT full membership to get back to 5, or get down on hands and knees and beg UND to join for baseball only. Maybe UND can demand a few goodies: like all baseball travel paid for by the Summit and all of NDSU/SDSU/USD must agree to a permanent arrangement for football scheduling in order for UND to join for baseball only and save the Summit.

Unless NDSU (or one of their conference-mates) renames their teams after an indigenous people, the NCAA will look the other way as long as the Summit has anyone even sniffing to join the league. Like the minimum attandance rule for FBS football (see Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan & Idaho), the NCAA will not de-commission someone who is already in place. The threat will hang over the Summit's collective heads and warnings will be issued, but nothing will happen. The Summit will survive if they want to, or will merge with someone like the WAC or split into pieces to join multiple conferences.

  15. the WAC could have been attractive last summer when they were down to Idaho, New Mexico State, Denver and Seattle. that was the time to pick up Montana, Montana State, UND, NDSU, Idaho State and maybe the South Dakota schools and Northern Colorado. star2city/siouxfan was posting that something like that was being discussed on other boards. Not sure why it fell thru, but can't see UND giving up a position in a destination FCS conference for a no football Summit League that is quickly becoming Great West II.

  16. Did any Big Sky or Missouri Valley players get drafted?

QB Brad Sorenson from Southern Utah was picked up by the San Diego Chargers

Palmer (LB) from Illinois St by Green Bay
