  1. I was totally on the Nielson bandwagon last year, but UND missed that boat. Do not think he will leave WIU this soon.

At this point, it seems that Caruso's coaching style and personal accountability is a better direction to go to turn the football program around from the low point where it is current floundering.

Several people have given good arguments for others, but D-I experience does not speak as fluently as a history as a head coach of taking a 2 - 8 program to the national playoffs in two years.

All that said, just rooting for Faison to come up with someone who can do for the football program what Hardee has done for the women's volleyball program.

  2. I ask because it seems many on here have turned their back on the team because they hate the coach. I've had numerous conversations with people at UND, plus with others who have a long history with the program, knowledge of the Big Sky and experience in coaching college football since we joined the Big Sky. Since that time, the prevailing view of these people has been it will take at least until year 4 or 5 in the Big Sky for our program to get the point where we are a legitimate playoff team, year in and year out. The consenus of these people, whose opinions I value, feels there is zero chance Coach Mussman is fired. We think the UND Athletic Dept is going to stay the course, because it's the right thing to do and because firing a coach almost always sets a program back.

Will there even be a presser if Muss is not going to be fired? What would Faison say: "After full consideration, I have decided to honor the existing contract between UND and Muss, and Muss will be coaching UND football team next year"??

That messege alone might be enough to scare recruits off, given future uncertainty.

CAS may be right on this. No Press Conference may very well mean green_sioux was right and Mussman is staying. :sneaky: Don't need a press conference to announce that.

  3. and Brett Favre finished his career in Minnesota, Wade Boggs went from the Red Sox to the Yankees, the list goes on and on.

you gotta think careers like Hazelton's would benefit from resurrecting a program like UND's current situation. would be a feather in his hat, much like what Bohl has done for his career at NDSU. (not that he is a shoo-in for the job, but he might be interested, and if he is, he should be considered)

  4. Not to nitpick, but it seems appropriate to point out that they came from UND to NDSU. Not the other way around.

now that there is funny. i don't care who you are.

thanks for the morning chuckle, bison06

This post still haunts the thread. If the people green_sioux is talking about are as well connected as he makes it sound, this board may implode next week. Really curious about what is going on behind those closed doors.

  6. to close out the season with 2 wins, the Sioux have to start today:

    UND 24

    UNC 20

since I missed by a point last week, lets see if the score works this week...

to close out the season with 2 wins, the Sioux have to win today:

    UND 24

    UCD 20

Doubt the outcome will have any impact on whether Mussman is retained as the head coach. That scenario has already been determined in Faison and Kelly's offices. The rest of us will be let in on that secret early next week.

  7. Back in 03 the BSC was the only conference that might have been looking. The Summit and MVC wasn't an option. Figure it out now?

the Summit and MVC are not an option now. Douple has turned his back on UND since Nov 2009 and Vivitero expressly said the invitation to South Dakota was because UND was not included. Now, with the Summit's basketball auto bid in jeopardy, some fans are bringing the subject up, but there has been no indication from either conference that they have changed their positions on adding UND.

On top of that, when I was in school my hope was always that if UND ever moved to DI that it could get into the Big Sky. Now, here we are and, really, it's a nice place to be. It is a tough conference with history, credibility and STABILITY.

Yes, it is a loss of nostalgic rivalries, but it also differentiates UND from the other Dakota/I-29 schools- in a good way. Except for a few schools, western conferences are not bus leagues. All 3 of them cover the western third of the country. The cost may be a little higher, but is it really better to sit on a bus all day to get to Fort Wayne than it is to fly to Flagstaff?

  8. If a MVFC team leaves even that isn't a guarantee UND would get in, if the remaining schools would rather go back to the original schedule and play everyone. Unless Patty V comes out and says the schools will support a UND invite it's not going to happen.

also, the MVC schools will more likely than not resist another Summit League team. that would give the Summit as many members in the MVFC as the MVC

  9. It would take Youngstown leaving the MVFC for there to even be a chance of UND having a football home under your plan, Herd.

It does raise the question, however about your motives here... Is it concern for UND's budget or the future existence/vialbility of the Summit?

  10. So is the problem that there simply aren't Hendrickson, Bellmore, Boyle, etc. types in our traditional recruiting areas anymore, or are we just letting them slip through the cracks and they end up playing in the NSIC?

I don't follow dII ball anymore, but I've often wondered how many players UND has overlooked that end up excelling there who could have really contributed here.

The talent must still be there... Mankato is ranked #1 and Duluth #5. I think Whitewater is up there too.

If this is correct, and I have no basis to think that your sources are bad, Faison is taking UND football down the same road as New Mexico State Aggies football.

    That makes me very sad.

  12. great to see the guys come from behind and win. don't think these last two games will have an impact on the decision whether Mussman goes or stays. if he stays, it will be because Faison doesn't want to buy out his contract and/or because he runs a clean program, not because the Sioux won the last two games against weak teams to get to 4 and 7.
