  1. New Mexico St. has never really been a world-beater in football though, with or without Faison. I don't really see the correlation. New Mexico State's football record during Faison's 6 years as A.D. was 29-40. In the 6 years prior to his tenure they were 18-48. In the 6 seasons after he left the A.D. post, they went 16-58. But, again, he wasn't on the Aggie coaching staff or the active player roster, nor does he participate in either of those roles for North Dakota.

He does not coach, but he does determine/extend the contracts of current coaches. He did not make administrative decisions that turned NMSU's program into a winner. My question is whether or not he 'demands' the level of excellence sought by posters on this forum.

  2. If Faison's oversight of the [sarcasm] stellar [/sarcasm] New Mexico State football program is a clue to how he operates and what his priorities are: status quo - we are here. The decisions he makes are much more important than those of us on a fan board. BB Coach Jones' job doesn't appear to be in danger, either.

That said, one reservation about the move to D-1 is the loss of the student part of student-athlete. Can a successful program be run with upstanding young men and women? It's tough enough for young people to stay out of trouble at their age, but even harder when they have a sense of entitlement. For this reason, Mussman has a difficult task, because it seems that, on his teams, off field character also counts. I pledge to attempt to back off of my criticisms of Mussman and basing it solely on a won-loss record. I appreciate that his leadership has kept the proper perspective in developing young men that UND can be proud to send out to the world.

  3. Recruiting is an inexact science to say the least. Kids can look like a sure fire great kid and turn out to be cancers off the field. Look at ndsu Bohl did well with players that weren't his. Then they weren't very good and he adjusted to right the ship and look at them now. Mussman inherited a huge mess and is just now recruiting on a somewhat fair level with everyone else and the ship is getting back on the right track. When Mollbergs class are juniors the team will be a complete reflection of mussman and how well he chose young men to represent und. It's on the brink of being great.

Didn't the last of Lennon's recruits graduate last year? Yes, there is the transition excuse, but IIRC this year was a reflection of mussman.

  4. So what in your mind would show he has there cajones you speak of other than cutting a very talented lb and starting safety or suspending players for missing a class?

well besides benching Mackey, how about sending in Zeb Miller for the last second field goal at Northern Colorado? How about getting in the officials' faces when Northern Colorado had 12 men on the field for that last play? (if your answer to this one is that he didn't realize there were twelve Bears, my response is that, as the coach, its his responsibility to be aware of things like that and if he wasn't then thats just another example of poor coaching) How about showing some passion and fire, either on the sidelines or in the press conferences?

I believe Hendrickson proved he was the right kind of leader when he was given the chance, maybe he should have been put back on the field when the Sioux started sputtering the second half of the season.

I do not pretend to know the team as well as you do (you have provided some outstanding analysis of the season on another thread), but I think great coaching is the reason a team like Alabama continues to win under Lou Saban. Jim Harbaugh turned the 49ers around. Sean Peyton not being on the sidelines has had a tremendous negative impact on the Saints. I admit I am only a Monday morning quarterback, but Phil Jackson was able to win in Chicago and in LA when he took over, but neither team has won since he left them. Coaching makes a tremendous difference in teams that win championships.

I sincerely hope you are right about Mussman turning things around, because having the kind of talent that Mollberg, Golladay and others bring and not winning and competing for Big Sky championships and making a run at the national playoffs because of coaching will be very disappointing for those players and us fans.

  5. Sorry, geaux, i really respect what you post and your dedication to the football team, but as long as Mussman is the head coach, UND has an uphill fight. He just has not shown that he has the cojones you need to take the Sioux to the next level.

  6. The coach can't pull leaders out of his ass. Sometimes guys develope into them while some others are natural born leaders and always have been. My point is that a coach can coach buy he can't play. There is no substitute for on field leadership from a teammate. Coach Bohl seemed to have no control when he had a locker room without any good leadership and now he looks like a genius thanks to players like Olson and Jensen. Without guys like that standards drop and so does the performance. An average coach can look really good thanks to the players and also can look like a chump thanks to the players.

high school is different than college. in high school, you gotta play with the hand that's dealt to you. in college, the coach gets to choose who he wants to recruit.

  7. I had a hall of fame coach in high school and we had a good amount of talent when I was a soph but the seniors didn't give 100% into doing the extra things and we didn't make it to state. So according to you its the coaches fault that there wasn't good player leadership? The coach can only do so much at some point the players need to do the extra things and execute on the field.

maybe the coach should have identified different leaders. Or maybe the other team was better coached? Sometimes hall of fame for coaches is as much about longevity as it is about winning.

  8. whether those teams become championship-caliber is up to the coach

    this ^^^^^^^^^

Coaching is why the Lakers won under Jackson and can't get over .500 now. Coaching is why the NO Saints are struggling this year.

Its about getting your players to play together. Its about getting your team to play with good fundamentals instinctively. Its about team members believing they are winners and ultimately champions. Its not about moral victories and staying in the game except for a couple of key breaks. Champions make breaks of their own.

  9. Louisville jumps to the ACC. What's next for the Big East football? Will Boise & San Diego go back to the Mountain West, or will New Mexico State (and maybe Idaho) get its oppotrunity to go to the MWC?

ESPN: ACC votes to add Louisville Cardinals

Louisville will officially join the Atlantic Coast Conference, becoming the sixth former Big East school to leave for the ACC.

The ACC's presidents and chancellors voted to add the Cardinals on Wednesday morning to replace Maryland, which will leave for the Big Ten in 2014.

  10. That's the reason I wouldn't mind to see UND move into the Summit League/MVFC (MVFC is a must) is easier road games for those living here in the Valley. Since I live in Fargo I could hit UND vs NDSU, SDSU, and USD very easily than I can with Missoula, Bozeman, Greeley etc. Plus I miss the UND-NDSU rivalry, especially the football one. If they were in the same conference there would be more meaning to it but since it would be a OOC game its just not the same. But being at the UND-Montana game last month was a blast. So there are pros and cons on both sides of this issue.

Tell that to Iowa / Iowa State and Florida / Florida State

  11. I know this will irk the Bison posters & trolls, but the Summit is still not a destination conference. Yes, the Missouri Valley is a destination mid major conference, but the MVFC has not invited UND. The Big Sky, on the other hand is very stable.

Yes, the addition of a hockey rival to the Summit does make it a little more desirable, and familiar old rivals of the days when some of us were students are appealing, BUT the Big Sky was always a dream, and now it's a dream fulfilled. I say the Sky is the best place for UND.

  12. After watching what Notre Dame did to Oklahoma last night (despite allowing the first rushing touchdown of the season) one has to ask what it would cost to bring in Notre Dame's Defensive Coordinator as the head coach. Is UND willing to fund the football program to achieve the level of their competition or is the administration content to be the Big Sky's next Northern Colorado?

    http://www.und.com/s...iaco_bob00.html

Would Kelley/Faison open up the wallets enough to bring someone from Notre Dame's D staff (like the D line coach) in as head coach? That goal line stand against USC was pretty impressive!

Disclaimer: Since Mussman has not been relieved of his duties nor resigned yet, I think its probably safe to say he will be back in 2013.

  13. Fixed your post

So Geaux... You are more connected than I am; and definitely more observant...

What is the coaching staff's heartburn with Hendrickson? Why didn't he get playing time last year (2011)? I sure thought he was impressive when he had an opportunity on game day this year.

  14. Ehhh, I dunno... Braden's 68.2% completion rate versus Marcus's 56.0%...I'll take the better passer. Yes, Marcus adds a rushing threat, but I'm certainly glad Braden got his shot to start the games in the second half of the season. But then again, I'm heavily biased. UND was not far at all from being 4-1 in their last five games.

it's ok by me. Either way, UND had a couple of good options, just want to stir the pot a bit ;) Hanson put up some of the best QB numbers UND has had in the short time he was able to play here, however, Hendrickson had a pretty darn good first half of the year too. Guess we can understand why Joey Bradley left.

  15. Unfortunately for UND fans, the reality is that our biggest football rivalry is dead and our biggest hockey rivalry will be dead after this season. And, oh yea, our nickname is dead too.

This ^^^^^^^^^^ is the bottom line - UND lost its identity and is losing its rivals. NDSU went to D-I before UND and is in a conference that doesn't include UND. Now Minnesota and Wisconsin are moving to a hockey conference that doesn't include UND. While happy that UND is in the Big Sky, its disheartening not having regular games with NDSU in football. Not as happy with the NCHC (yet) but that conference has not even begun, so who knows at this point how it will all work out. However, will definitely mourn the loss of the Sioux-Gopher hockey rivalry as much as the loss of the Sioux-Bison rivalry and the Fighting Sioux name.

Being a Fighting Sioux fan has been difficult for all the losses the past few years.

  16. Based on this year and players returning, I'll be surprised if the Griz is ranked higher than the Jacks to start the season next year.

History will give the Griz the benefit of the doubt, just like Northern Iowa this year.
