  1. UNC and UND practically have to be travel partners for sports that need that type arrangement: therefore UND and UNC have to be in the same division. It's possible that for basketball the Big Sky won't even have divisions even with 12 teams: just go double round robin.

NAU has to be matched with SUU (NAU has been matched with Sac St and that was a travel nightmare)

Weber and Idaho St go together

    Montana and Montana St

E Wash and Idaho (if it comes back) or Portland St (if it doesn't)

Portland St is the best travel partner for Sac St

As long as Utah State and/or San Jose St are still in a conference with the Vandals, Idaho will stay FBS. But if both are gone, Idaho's football program would become a financial and performance disaster. Idaho was stuck playing in the Sunbelt as an affiliate for a couple of years, and that killed recruiting (California and Washington kids had no interest in playing in the Sunbelt) and their budget. Idaho isn't a very big school (smaller than Idaho State and Boise as well as UND). Idaho doesn't have the option to raise student fees to pay FBS bills (like some new FBS schools - UTSA, Texas State) or improve facilities. Idaho's facilities are the FCS level are really no different than USD's, as both play almost all their sports in a 1970's dome that needs refurbishment.

in the current 11/13 member Big Sky, UND does not have a natural travel partner, even with the addition of Idaho. Only choices being Northern Colorado (960 miles) and Montana State (825 miles). Whoever has the second night of that swing will be playing a travel-weary team unless someone like NDSU joins the Big Sky. Maybe, UND will be a one-night swing with opportunities for out of conference games with Summit/Missouri Valley teams.

  2. And may be exactly what the Big Sky is waiting for: 12 all-sport teams + 14 football teams in two divisions.

If the Big Sky added Idaho and went to divisions, it would probably look like this:

FB: Pacific - Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sac St, Portland St, NAU, SUU, Weber St

Mountain - E Wash, Idaho, Montana, Montana St, Idaho St, UNC, UND

BB: Move Idaho State to Pacific Division (travel partner for Weber St)

swap Northern Colorado and Weber & it could keep the remaining four original members together and reunite them with another of the founders. call it north/south. still think its a long shot to get Idaho back in the Big Sky

  3. yes, it is the real name of the Sioux, but it is the name of the state. I don't think even the NCAA can take the name of the state away from the university & force the University of North Dakota to be called the University of North. ;)

  4. So because a high school uses Rough Riders UND should abandon the idea? Although I can appreciate the originality of the Nokotas idea I wonder if it has too much native american connotation to it (I realize a nakota is a horse)?

Nokotas is good. Bison also has a native american connotation. as in tatanka, the sacred bison

Rumor has it that it's decided and It's gonna be the Roughriders, those who live outside Grand Forks won't know and won't care that a local high school has the same nicknames. That isn't uncommon around the country.

Roughriders is good. could be so much worse

That's what rumors are - rumors. No way to know the truth - UND had to put those dollars in there otherwise questions would have been asked I suppose. I should say that it wouldn't bother me if this was the truth - this is another no win situation because you will never please everyone.

truer words have never been spoken

  5. This may be a problem with just me, but when I click the add hyperlink button my browser screen goes gray and locks up. It happened on chrome and safari.

same problem with chrome and when trying to insert a quote on ms internet explorer

Thanks for all you're doing about this stuff, Jim

  6. Yup, sure, the Fighting Irish of ND are offended by the Fighting Sioux of ND. I'll buy that one along with that oceanfront property in Larimore.

    Kelley in the same story:

[Attention paid to the nickname issue]... has created a perception at the national level that UND’s campus environment may not be as welcoming to all students as we would like for it to be perceived.

Huh? Most (not all) of the national stuff I have seen has been sympathetic to continuing as the Fighting Sioux.

Unfortunately, a poor choice of words, but we still have to go back to the Big Sky conforming to the NCAA's hard line.
