  1. Is this a case where it may be posted internally for a period of time before posted externally? In the case of the football coach, it likely wasn't seen as there being any internal candidates. May not be the case for volleyball.

good possibility. have no access to internal postings

  2. I think that Andrus should be on that list somewhere. Wouldn't be surprised if Mills or Tuitele got a little bit more of a look. Would like Hoffner to be looked at for OC.

Stephen Axman's name hasn't go much play, but he has some Big Sky ties, including head coach of NAU from 1990-1997.

Mike Bath appears to be an up-and-comer though much of his experience is with Miami (OH) so not sure on how well he could fill out a staff. But reading about him, he is young, driven and pretty dedicated. Makes my list but would guess he would go back to Miami in heartbeat.

    Michael Kelly is also intriguing.

is Axman really coaching in Serbia?

  3. I don't think Faison is going to go down the good ole boy track. It just doesn't seem like his style. So I don't think it will be Bubba.

I also don't think it will be Pflugrad (even though he's my choice right now). I just have a feeling Faison will go out on his own and hire someone else. Obviously based on nothing other than a hunch. Should be a very interesting few days.

    ^^^^^ this ^^^^^

  4. Pflugrad would be a great hire, but I have him at number 2 behind Caruso. But I guess I trust Faison, as he's made some really good coaching hires in other sports.

    agree on all 3 points

there are also some other good resumes on the list - DeWitt, Hoffner, Bliel, Marshall, Ianello to name a few

there is probably one more that we are unaware of that will come to light later today or maybe tomorrow morning

  5. Randy Hedberg, Lennon's qb coach at SIU, was an NFL quarterback too. His records at Minot and St Cloud were not great. Just being an NFL qb does not guarantee success as a head coach. Even Bart Starr, who was a legendary qb with 5 NFL championships to his credit, was a less than successful coach. Don't mean to say that qb's can't be good coaches, just that being a quarterback doesn't guarantee success.

Still very curious about who will be applying in the next 43 or so hours, but have to think the Pflugrad is the strongest of those whose names we know.

  6. No. He should be a finalist if he applies. I believe he is already a great coach, based on his success as hs head coach and FBS asst. When he was with the Cowboys he was highly respected. Myles Austin thought a lot of him. They liked his intangibles and recognized his leadership skills. He didn't succeed at Wisconsin cuz of his great arm but because of his smarts and leadership skills as well as being a great athlete. He was an excellent student and well liked and respected by his coaches and teammates. Anyone who claims he is too young just doesn't understand. He understands the culture at UND and in GF, N.Dak. and Mn, Wisconsin. He is a leader and a winner. Very personable and excellent recruiter. I was in Pittsburgh the week after Muss let go. Pitt fans like him and think he has made a difference. I would need to know who else applies before I say hire him but we would be fortunate to get him. Pflugrad should also get interview. Not sure who else has applied. I was told yesterday Bollinger would apply but that is third hand so not sure.

    thanks for your insights, Ira

  7. Faison needs to move quickly on this. New coach will need to put together staff and sit down with present team to keep them here and get recruiting going immediately. Anyone have update on candidates?

Who else is expected to apply by Tuesday?

Ira, does this in any way change your support of Bollinger?

  8. will Bohl's change have an effect on UND's search? Does Faison already have the next coach picked? Are there possible applicants the will now apply for NDSU's job instead (especially if Bohl is taking pretty much his whole staff)? If Klieman was Faison's choice before, would he drop UND and move to Wyoming with Bohl or hope to get the NDSU HC spot? Very interesting  to wait until the final applicant list has been leaked...

  9. Whoever gets the NDSU job is going to have a lot of pressure on them. Of course they also have a lot of resources and recruiting advantage that other programs don't have right now. I think the great senior class of NDSU has made Bohl look good too, and the dominance most certainly wouldn't have been the same next year, regardless. NDSU fans have been spoiled, and if their expectations are too high for the new guy, they could put a lot of pressure on him after a few years of even moderate success.

and this is probably why Bohl chose to leave now.

  10. GT will likely promote from within, won't he? So why would this have an impact on UND's decision? Brooks Bollinger would not be interested in the NDSU job, would he? Do you think Pflugrad will pull his name out thinking he wants the Bison job instead?

On the other hand, the sooner Faison makes his decision, the better.
