  1. I decided not to work today, and will get to catch the first game. Thought there should be a thread.

As a former Wolford High student, I'll be voting for the team who was involved in my first nickname change, the North Prairie Cougars!

So that's the background for the Wolves nickname!  takes me back to simpler times... ;)

  2. assuming the same voting pool, 83.65% of nodaks voters would need to choose RR over FH.  Not gonna happen.

out of curiosity, I ran the numbers of both votes against the finalists...

in the first vote, out of the votes cast for the 3 semi-finalists, the percentages were within  a couple points of where they ended up in the runoff vote:

    43% Fighting Hawks

    29% Roughriders

    28% Nodaks.

Then if you cut that to only the voters who voted for either Hawks or Roughriders, it comes to to:

    60% Fighting Hawks

    40% Roughriders.

If you consider only the votes cast for the two finalists during the runoff, it came out to:

    62% Fighting Hawks

    38% Roughriders.

Even though there were thousands more voters, the percentages stayed relatively consistent.

so, my conclusion is that there will have to be a monumental shift of voters OR a huge influx of new voters to defeat Fighting Hawks.

    Oh F'Hawk.

  3. 145 votes this time vs 241. Approx 60% of the original exit poll. Will the actual vote also see the same decline? Which nickname will suffer from the largest drop off? Which one will benefit?

Since the vote closes at noon, will the results be made public by close of business today?

  4.

Added tto not replaced by.  Hence the comparison to Mizzou or Ole Miss.

I'm looking to get through this "adopt a new name" B.S. process as painlessly  as possible. Most people agree that our choices suck.  Nodaks doesn't suck as a secondary nickname as the schools mentioned use two names and as we have used Nodaks in the past.

We can add another name later and do it the right way.  If for nothing else to do it without the help of the Kelley admin.

... many of the Roughrider supporters are voting for something rather than against something.  That speaks volumes.  Lets face it, we were never going to get a consensus no matter which nickname we would pick...

Roughriders has the potential once people get over their biases to other names.

tnt has a valid point. Roughriders has been my first choice through this whole process. I don't think I'm the only one.

Unlike Nodak supporters who were Fighting Sioux (despite potential sanctions) forever, than only North Dakota, and now Nodak. And on top of that, many Nodak supporters want it only temporarily, so that yet another name can be selected.

That sounds like a great plan, let's let this hang over UND's head for another 10 years.

  5. Hope everyone that voted for Roughriders returns and votes again. Voter fatigue will take a toll on turnout, as will apathy as many favorites have been eliminated already.

Expect that the students will again vote for Fighting Hawks, despite efforts to educate them about the lack of originality and the logo passed around last month net being the real replacement logo.

Still cannot wrap my head around the Nodaks moniker. Just feels wrong. I think Petey is misguided, and this nickname will be with UND for a long time, so please think about that when you cast your vote. While Nodaks may be a shortened version of remaining North Dakota, it doesn't sound right as a permanent nickname for the flagship school of the state. As has been posted before, it's ok for a North Dakota based insurance company (who by the way sponsors Bison broadcasts, while Farmer's Union Insurance sponsors UND, iirc), an electric co-op or a retail hardware store, it just doesn't fit for the permanent nickname of UND.

Generic bird nicknames don't reflect strongly for a flagship school, either, so might have a tough time if there is yet another round, and may become another victim of voter fatigue if Rouhriders is eliminated this round.

  6. And if Hawks or Riders wins we are all at the mercy of an already untrusted leadership to somehow produce a logo that's good enough to elevate a mediocre nickname to greatness.

Nodaks, on the other hand already has a built-in logo, the interlocked ND.

Kelly will have retired by the time a new logo is commissioned. On the other hand, pretty sure Faison will still be at UND.

  7. Yeah I've been a life long hunter but dislike big game & killing just to say u got one as a trophy

Y'all are applying 21st century political correctness to this process (as you are with some of the quotes attributed to TR). Wild game trophy hunting was not considered to be a negative circa 1900. Political correctness is what got us into this mess in the first place, and now you are aligning with the PC crowd in your arguments.

Edit: if you deer hunt for that trophy buck, you aren't trying to get the tasty meat, those big guys are not tasty.

  8. The apathy/disillusionment rate concerns me. Which of the names will lose the most support? Either by apathy or being disenfranchised by their favorite name already being eliminated or just being tired of the drawn out process.

I wonder if that is part of the strategy to get F'Hawks to come out on top. If the poll on this forum is an indication, there may only be half the votes cast as there was in the first round. If that is the case, if enough supporters of any of the 3 remaining names stay the course, it may very well win the 50% required to be the next nickname this round. The comforting thought about this is that Roughriders has polled the best here, so hoping that translates into more apathy in the Nodaks and F'Hawks camps and allows this stupid process to end this week with the selection of Roughriders as the new UND nickname.

    Go 'Ridas!

  9. This thread is as big a mess as this whole process.

FWIW: I voted RR and now will be voting Nodaks.

I am begging you... Please do not do that.

agree that this is a mess, but don't compound the problem and allow Kelly's manipulation to change what the runoff candidates should be, based on the result based on the original vote

  10. spoken like a true supporter/fan of the University of North Dakota! congrats.

maybe switch that to "I'm voting for the option that's BEST FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA?

While I am on your side wanting Roughriders, I tend to agree with these posters that you are teetering on the edge of pissing them off.

Ask the Nodak voters to join us, but your real target should be the North Stars and Sundog people. They are the ones whose favorite candidate lost and have the swing votes going forward.  If you can get, let's say, 75% of them to vote Roughriders and swing some Nodak'ers, that should put 'ridas ahead of Hawks.

    Just my my two cents.

  11. I dono,   I think its kind of a refreshing change of pace, so everyone can remember were talking about real humans.

I think we need a QB change to, but the way most are posting about bartels, its like he killed off the last unicorn or something.

Go ahead and be critical, but dont be a keyboard warrior, it makes you look stupid.

if his concentration and/or performance is being impacted by his personal situation, maybe a leave of absence should be considered. (Good) Personnel and play calling need full attention.

  12. Academic all conference. 4.0 GPA. Last semester. Supportive of his teammates.  Never been arrested. Stays at UND in summer. Works with special needs kids. He will be first college FB player in history benched for going to class.  Having the opinion he shouldn't start or play if that's how you feel is fine. Taking a cheap shot like that can unfairly hurt a guys reputation. You need to retract that.

something seriously wrong if this is true.

  13. Last day of the vote and Nodaks is making a push on the exit poll on SS. Is that a reflection a surge in the official tally?

doubt that either North Stars or even Sundogs actually come out as low and also think there will be more support for Fighting Hawks outside this forum. Will it be enough to displace Nodaks or Roughriders? My guess is that this forum would tend to be more aligned with the hockey team's wishes , or any of the athletes for that matter, than the other 75,000 or so people eligible to vote. Are any of the names strong enough among the casual fan or even the interested alumni to get them to actually take the time to make sure they can vote?

Since the email addresses in the UND.edu domain are the automatic votes, the preferences of the students and faculty will play a larger part in the final tally. With the students, it sounds like they are leaning toward Fighting Hawks iirc, while I expect that the faculty may be more Sundog supporters than most of the public.

Many alumni out of the area will more than likely not be following the debate closely enough to have heard the hockey team references or the discussions about the dozens of other _____ Hawk names and other reasons covered on the forum. The alumni who are hockey supporters more than other sports may be more likely to vote than the general casual fan, but they may prefer the North Stars name, especially those in the cities.

The Roughrider reference as the state nickname, even if it's unofficial, will have more support from the out of region alumni, the question is, will they vote?

so, predicting an upset ... Fighting Hawks will sneak into second place ahead of Nodaks, Sundogs may hit double digits, but barely. North Stars will also pick up support, but not enough.

Run-off between Fighting Hawks and Roughriders. In the end, the Hawks pick up the anti-Roughrider vote and the new name you hear will be University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Hawks.

    btw- voted Roughriders

have made no secret of my dislike for Nodaks

off by a little, thought Roughriders would maintain the lead over Fighting Hawks this round, but looks like the tenor of the prediction may be spot in on.

  14. Stupid question, 'cause I don't know the answer...

When end the defense is stacking against the run, is Rudolph's offensive scheme so rigid that the quarterback is not allowed to call an audible? Shouldn't the quarterback recognize the defense and change the play at the line of scrimmage?

  15. How not to choose a mascot?  How about not changing our mascot from "Native Americans" to 'White Men on Horses."

the Roughriders at San Juan Hill included Native Americans.

btw, how does that fit with Roosevelt's supposed racism?

edit... Also, I didn't know about this one - the siege of Santiago!

  16.

Well first, it's called an Offensive coordinator.  Second, I don't think there are any limitations on where UND coaches open a search although they obviously have connections in the midwest.

    bump

I thought the thread title was a clever play on words about the offensive play calling being offensive, as in the op was offended by the lack of imagination being used. Seems to be a reasonable extrapolation of his intent.

The play calling has been too predictable and needs a change of pace... First down plunge into the middle of the line, second down off tackle or sweep, third down desperation pass leads to fourth down punt unless you shake things up.
