This level of attrition is not sustainable if we are going to compete regionally and nationally. What is making players hang it up after one season like this? Or is it just bad luck? ???

Is the ratio of players leaving the team any different than the ratio of the general student population who leave college for whatever their personal reasons may be? My guess, and it's only a guess is that the retention of players for 4 or 5 years is much better than the dropout rate of the average student. Courses can be difficult and college is not for everyone.

5 in a row is truly unprecedented.

NDSU honestly should consider a move-up to FBS; either Sun Belt or MAC. They are far too good of a program right now to miss out on FBS membership. Big 12 talk is intriguing, but NDSU doesn't have the stadium capacity to fit into that conference it appears.

Smallest stadiums in the Big 12 are 50,000+. If they built it, would enough people come?

  3. Seriously, what's wrong with staying FCS? It is D-I in every sport. Unless the P5 break off, FCS is probably the only D-I sport NDSU will win a national title in. Besides hockey, FCS is UND's only other national championship possibility, as well. Basketball and volleyball titles were sacrificed to move up. Baseball, softball, soccer, etc were not even possibilities in D-II. Unless Sioux Volley is right about at least part of the Big Sky moving together, both UND and NDSU will be best served to remain FCS under the current system.

To be fair, NDSU has absolutely nothing to gain from playing UND., but that does not imply that they are afraid to play the game. That's why Coach Schweigert insisted on allowing the two consecutive games at the Fargodome. It was a shrewd bit of gamesmanship on his part - call their bluff, get on the schedule, gain experience of playing the bison the first time around and be able to call on the lessons learned for the next time, whether in 2019 or in a playoff game before that.

Both UND's (Thomas) and NDSU's (Taylor and/or Bohl) problem children have moved on and the game will happen with more regularity now that the ice has been broken.

And, personally, I hope UND does not move to the Summit, but would not mind if NDSU and even the South Dakota schools would join the Big Sky if the Summit does fall apart.

The Summit is rated pretty high right now.

The Big Sky is a solid conference, the Summit is not stable and doesn't have a football home for UND. RPI's are fluid and subject to change. Fullerton is pushing the boundaries while Douple doesn't have vision other than backfilling for schools that have left the conference.

And to top it off, when I was in school, the Big Sky was the conference I always thought UND and NDSU should join.

  6. Yote53... Congratulations on getting a good coach. I know I will get some negative reps for this, but Nielson is a very good coach. 2 national championships in 3 years and turning WIU into a winning team proves that. There must be a reason or reasons that he wanted out of Macomb, whether it's an impending downgrade of their program or a personal disagreement with administration, he obviously wanted to leave WIU. Realizing there are a lot of upset people on this board who take WIU's selection to the playoffs over UND personally, I believe there were a couple other teams that should have also been left home before UND, but the NCAA has a vendetta against the former Sioux and Idaho State's AD has personal issues with UND, preventing UND from getting the votes to receive the recognition they deserve. Instead, New Hampshire and Eastern Illinois got support and UND was left out. A (hopefully) final F U to UND from the NCAA.

Anyway, back to Nielson, USD got a good coach who will give the Coyotes a decent chance to be competitive in the MVFC over the next few seasons. Hope he is as good a fit for you as Coach Schweigert is for UND. And yes, it certainly appears Coach Glenn did take over a mess and has cleaned up the discipline of the program and left it in good shape for Nielson. (For those who forgot Meierkort's legacy, think back to the locker room destruction at the Alerus following the final game in the Great West)

  7. Maybe the ncaa is trying to force the split of the Big Sky into FBS and FCS leagues. Only 3 of 13 teams from the #2 rated FCS conference. Idaho State would likely not be one of the move-ups. A little jealousy on the ISU AD's part in not supporting his conference more?

    Sioux Volley, you got anything?

  8. So, from the ongoing discussion, our best chances of getting into playoffs occur under the following scenario:

    UND wins

    PSU beats EWU

    MSU beats MU

SUU beats NAU (not sure about this one, correct me if wrong)

Checking the schedule, one could spend all day next Saturday watching things unfold. MSU/MU play noonish/early afternoon. PSU/EWU and SUU/NAU start late afternoon. UND plays Poly at 8 PM Central.

How long has it been since Montana, Montana State and Eastern Washington were all out of the playoffs?  Maybe the sun comes up in the west that morning.
