Gee, what would you be willing to bet those punks would have just followed him outside if he had tried to just walk away? I imagine Beck didn't want to trash a private establishment, so he figured it was better to take it outside so that innocent bystanders weren't injured in the process. The bottom line is, these punks wanted a fight and they weren't going to go home until they got one. If a 21 year old college kid can't go to a bar on his own free time and have an adult beverage, then that is sad commentary on our world.

I would be interested in a couple of them.

I am getting really sick and tired of hearing some people say that Beck should have "made a different choice". What was he supposed to do, lay down and get beaten to a pulp? Would that have made him a good boy? If somebody was stupid enough to mess with me, they would get it right back. I am thinking if Beck had just "walked away", these idiots would have followed him and jumped him from behind. Beck has the same right to defend himself as anyone else, football player or not. This case is closed as far as I am concerned. And it should be to everyone else too.

I think "Schloss" should stick to hockey.

There are some internet trolls who post crap on YouTube videos about how overrated he is and how he wouldn't do anything against today's goaltenders. Also a prominent Grand Forks radio host (Bill Tanner of the Big Dogz) basically said he wasn't a fan of The Great One because he couldn't fight. There are more of them than you think; they just keep it to themselves most of the time.

The Great One also holds 61 NHL records. But some people think he's overrated because he couldn't fight. The bottom line is, I don't think anyone will ever touch some of those records.

This attitude must change or we'll never win anything significant in football again. This is another example of the lowering of expectations that I have seen in all our sports; but it is especially prominent in football. Our long-term goal is to be a top-notch FCS team in the Big Sky Conference and an annual contender for the FCS championship. If we don't think like a champion, we'll never be a champion.

What I find interesting is that fighting is considered "part of the game" in hockey, but in most other sports, it is not tolerated at all. Fighting in the NFL or NBA means a stiff fine and/or suspension. Fighting in MLB (with the exception of the occasional pitcher-hitter fights over pitch location) is also met with a zero tolerance mentality. Is it the sticks? Is it the fact that hockey is faster than all the sports I listed above? Or is it based in the origins of the game and the working-class, blue-collar environment from which it emerged? I wonder what everyone else thinks because I think it's a combination of all of those things.

The year the Alerus Center opened (2001), we had a bunch of night games before hockey started and they were well-attended by everyone. Of course, that was an awesome team and the Alerus had the novelty factor, but I still like night games better than those 1pm kickoffs. I think the reason we went away from night games after that was that Dale Lennon didn't like night games, so they stopped scheduling them. At least we don't have those stupid 11am "sunrise kickoffs" that the B1G has had for years. That would really bite; I like to sleep in on Saturdays sometimes.

I have renewed my football (and hockey) tickets and I am looking forward to the coming sports season.

Last season pretty much proved that the WBB program has seriously declined from the heights of winning three straight D-II titles in the 1990's. It can be argued that, for the first time in 20 years, the MBB program is in better shape than the WBB program. In order to climb out of this hole, serious reconstructive surgery is needed and I am impressed that Brewster is willing to do the dirty work to get the program back to winning. I am thinking that the final years of the Roebuck regime were not good ones for the program; now it's time to build a program that can win conference titles and get to the Big Dance once in a while.

While I don't agree with all of DaveK's rantings, that is what a message board is for. You don't have to like what he posts or agree with it, but I like having a diverse selection of opinions on here, whether they are in the majority or minority.

Good for the Rangers. All of the whiny, complaining post-game press conferences don't help you win games; all they do is provide unproductive distractions at the worst possible time in the season (the playoffs). Torts has had success in the NHL (see Tampa Bay 2004), but after a certain point in time, his antics and his sandpaper personality wear thin with the players, the fans and the media. He needs to smooth over some of those rough edges and I think he'll have more success.

Waving off a totally legitimate goal so you can call matching minors for roughing for an incident that happened well behind the play was a case of the officials potentially deciding the outcome of a game. If the Red Wings had scored in regulation or in overtime, the outrage over this would have consumed the entire offseason. But all's well that ends well, I guess.

It will be much more difficult to cram more and more kids into GFRR as the south end continues to grow. But I guess keeping the GFRR athletic parents happy is much more important, right? That is the REAL reason this nonsense is allowed to continue.

Our Men's BB program hasn't been great for about 20 years, so our fans have gotten used to it. But I think they are (finally) moving in the right direction.
