Anyone who doesn't realize there are some experienced DII coaches who are far better coaches than Jones are fooling themselves; those are targets for UND. If UND would like to raise their HC salary to 150K to mirror NDSU and the Mussman to Bubba change, then some DI assistants could go on the radar. No, but if you offer a higher salary, you can attract more applicants and a better pool should yield a better coach. Head and assistant. I don't think anyone believes UND can poach a coach from another D 1 team.
UND needs to consider this direction along with facility improvements, both of which fall on the AD.
-
You guys need to relax. Last year NDSU was on the get rid of Saul bandwagon after you beat us, and we went on to win a game in the NCAA's. Maybe this is a good sign for you in the long run.
Phillips/NDSU had already beat some major DI teams (Wisconsin & NCAA tourney appearance) on the road; Jones has yet to even keep UND close in such a game.
-
Unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable.
I don't expect this bull$%!# ever, especially versus NDSU.
I'm officially on the get rid of Jones list. This is not condoned at a flagship university versus their instate rival. This is kind of the thing that any other competent AD looks at and then makes a coaching change.

NDSU with the narrow victory

4th down or 4th quarter! Ha!Going to be a wild 4th down in Fargo. NDSU up 31-26 but CCU has the ball 1st and goal on the 3 yard line. Both defenses getting absolutely carved.
But yes, this game is surprisingly becoming interesting. Good day if both NDSU squads lose along with a UND win?
-
I don't know if the UND strength and conditioning program deserves criticism, but it certainly has yet to deserve any praise.
-
Should be a fun game, then again, UND-NDSU games usually are. Hopping to see UND get it's first DI men's basketball win in Fargo tomorrow versus the buffaloes.

We got in the big sky and created the nchc under his watch so he seems to be good with the administrative work/deal making. Less adept at networking with/keeping tabs on coaches.
Conference ties are only one of the duties that athletic departments are responsible for. Additionally, it is important that funding is disbursed correctly, marketing/game day atmosphere of all events - particularly revenue generating sports - is properly handled, and the support from boosters and alumni is respectfully dealt with and used to its fullest potential.
I'm afraid UND does not have enough innovation and desire to be great when it comes to football and basketball. Expectations are always the first step to success, and UND lacks that right now from the top.

1 year later, it seems apparent to me that a lengthy search was necessary because Faison didn't have a list of coaches to contact. He fired Muss and flew by the seat of his pants from there. I'm not upset with the result (Bubba), but the process was awful.
In all honesty, what else would one expect from Faison? Not impressed with the leadership in the athletic department.
-
36 point loss.
Not good enough IMO. Need to get way better.
-
Zero physical presence down low for UND. Need more there to compete, particularly on the road vs major programs.
-
There's no question having those two things would spice up the Betty quite a bit. It's just another athletic department shame on a long list of things...Hopkins High School has video board and banner. Just saying...
Whether UND supporters want to believe it or not, the current administration is too set on hockey. I agree that UND can ultimately allow hockey football and basketball all three thrive together, but the contemporary athletic department staff, particularly Faison, is incapable of doing that.

Still need to be way better. A win is a win though, and now a tough game versus Minnesota lies ahead. Jones will really have to outdo himself, along with the players of course, in order for UND to have a shot.
-
Final.
NDSU pulls it out 27-24 over SDSU.
I personally think SDSU offered the only chance for NDSU to lose before the national championship game. NDSU will be in the championship, I'd say.

So what's the deal with the twins down in Florida? Haven't heard anything on them lately.
I am really itching for some commits. After getting so many early on, I am having withdrawals.
First recruiting weekend this month will be this weekend so things should pick up next week. Also, had to wait for FBS season to finish up because transfers are big targets for the staff, and rightfully so.
-
Took UND over 100 years to win a national title in football. Willing to wait another century? How many titles has Minnesota won since 1960?You know that we have only been eligible for either for two seasons coming into this year right? If things don't ever go in cycles, then surely Michigan is a favorite to win the National Championship in football this year.
Cycles are not guaranteed; you can't just sit back and let things happen. That's a real hesitant way of thinking that quite frankly doesn't work. You want to break the cycle and win, you have to be proactive. Times change and sometimes you aren't guaranteed anything in the future, even if you believe in cycles. Breaking the modern trend requires an open mind and dedication/hard work.
Point is, UND has never been DI before and it's a different animal. UND is not guaranteed anything. UND's athletic department is still adapting to the higher requirements of DI versus DII athletics.

Yah and it wasn't that long ago that UND was the front runner - everything goes in cycles. I know this is a fan site so it's the place to rant but geez sometimes I wonder how many of you would do if you were held to the same level at your jobs.
When was the last time UND was in the NCAA DI basketball tournament? When was the last time UND was in the FCS playoffs?
Please don't bore me with the ridiculous "cycles speech".

My goodness does Blinn College have some good athletes. If they are committed to academics and being good student-athletes within the community, then I think Bubba and staff should consider signing one or two off this list.
-
You're playing both sides. OOC has nothing to do with making the dance (though it does have an effect on seeding if they were to make it). Yet you say its the Dance or nothing. The only way UND will ever get to the Dance is to win the Big Sky tournament.
Wrong, if we're speaking hypotheticals here. Any club that wins OOC games against ranked teams (UND had/has chances this season against Utah and Minnesota) will be considered by the selection committee. If UND or any other clubs beat a bunch of OOC powerhouses, they would be considered despite the conference tournament outcome.
-
You are missing the point. When NDSU (a peer institution by any measure) can go to the NCAA tournament twice since becoming playoff eligible (including in their first season of eligibility) and consistently beat and/or gives high-major programs a run for their money, it debunks a lot of the excuses that some in our fan base are making for the Men's program. UND and NDSU have some of the same problems to overcome (weather, geography, one-bid conference affiliation, ect), but only one of these schools is having success and we both know which one it is. While NDSU puts together signature wins and contends for the NCAA tournament, UND works hard to punch their ticket to the CIT. If you don't have a problem with that, that is your perrogative. I for one expect more.
100% correct.
Only difference between UND basketball and NDSU basketball, and even football teams, is the coaching and athletic departments; both of which have been superior for NDSU. NDSU's facilities are on par with UND's, but it's the effort put into the programs by NDSU that trumps that of UND.
-
Former NDSCS head coach Chuck Parsons is the OC at Blinn now. Should be able to open a pipeline to there.
There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of FBS caliber talents that come out of Blinn College. UND should seriously look at bringing in 2 - 3 of their student-athletes per year.
-
Out-of-conference play is troubling. If UND ever did win the conference, they would definitely be a 16-seed and get a bad matchup in the first round.
NDSU has no more the facilities than UND, and when they had NCAA tournament quality teams, they made sure to put some out-of-conference wins together to better their resume. It helped them in the end. Jones and UND are surely not doing that by blowing huge leads to SDSU and losing to Texas Pan-American by 18 on a neutral floor. If UND loses as bad as they do on neutral floors (1-5 in last two tournaments), how will they compete in a NCAA game or BSC title game? It's troubling.

Ok it's a bad basketball conference... what should we do about it? What is the solution?
Win it.

10-10 is against only Big Sky schools on the road the last two seasons.Did you compare his conference road record to other schools conference road records since UND has been in the Big Sky conference? You'll find that winning on the road is tough and UND has fared on the road at least in conference comparatively better than most others in the conference.
And, as I mentioned, the Big Sky Conference is a bad DI conference. If you want to compare UND to the bottom 8 schools, then you're already doing UND basketball wrong.

Will be interesting to see how UND bounces back from the NDSU game. Obviously playing Dickinson State SHOULD allow UND to get right back in the win column.
