  1. I think the NDSU mold is the way to go. People often forget that they had significant contributions from JUCOs when they got good and used some to fill holes as they recruited HS kids to those holes. They understood that even if they wanted to build their team out of all non juco non transfers that they couldn't do that from the start by forcing kids who aren't ready into the starting lineup like we did with players like Mackey and many others. They had a lot of good CB transfers that sured up their d. From there they built depth for the future behind the transfers. It's obviously worked.

Bottom line, fill a hole with the best option regardless of where they come from, just don't rely on transfers every year.

There's no right way or wrong way if it works. Before everyone fell in love with NDSU's way of doing things, Eastern Washington won a national title with an FBS transfer at QB.

As far as Im concerned, it goes on a case by case basis. If there are a lot of talented transfers, then go that way. If there are talented underclassmen that can develop, go that way. Bottom line is discipline, leadership, and philosophy is important from the coaching staff and we didn't have that with Mussman.

Solid recruiting is always crucial to success, but a few top notch transfers can really improve a team so there's no use to ignore them.

  2. Who is throwing transfers under the bus? Maybe i missed it.

I've always been an advocate for FBS transfers and JUCOs if they increase competition and make the team better; however, there are some on this board who are enamored with the NDSU blueprint and they dislike bringing in transfers.

I for one agree that recruiting is the most important way to build a team, and I think Bubba's first freshmen recruiting class is a dandy, but the JUCOs and FBS transfers are also full of potential.

In the end, Bubba's philosophy and discipline should be applicable to all players. The rest is up to the talent and mindset of the players.

  3. Respect needs to be earned. Sounds like the players and coaching staff are well aware of it. Time to get to work and get back to North Dakota football.

I always hear Eastern Washington, Montana State and Montana are the perennial powers of the Big Sky; however, in my opinion, there's no reason THE University of North Dakota shouldn't be a top 4 team in the conference every year too. We are THE flagship university of North Dakota and we have the support and resources to get the job done.

Hopefully, over the next few years, Bubba helps us make that climb and stay there consistently.

  4. People can throw JUCOs and FBS transfers under the bus all they want, but when it comes down to it, the transfers we got are gonna be the difference in us being an improved team this year or not. And of course development of the QBs and improved coaching/discipline. All in all, this program is much better off with Bubba and his staff than Mussman; or at least it appears that way thus far.

Hope we surprise and jump over the 10th spot on the coaches preseason poll. At 6-6, that would put us in the middle of the pack. Then, improvement would only be the norm given the youth of this team.

  5. Doesn't Tillman have just one year of eligibility left?

Yes, he is a senior, but I was suggesting he may simply have a breakout year and not that he will be in next year's position rankings.

Having FBS talent at the cornerback spot is refreshing; CB was a glaring weakness during Mussman's tenure. I also think Fr. Chris Carter possesses FBS talent and will be a very good defensive back at some point for us.

  6. I agree. Much closer than the score. Bubba's discipline will keep most games close and winnable.

Just the philosophy he's installing will improve the team, and of course that includes discipline. For whatever reason, Mussman's teams were sloppy when it came to the little things.

Running the ball, minimizing mistakes, and being assignment sharp on defense will go a long way towards improvement.

  7. This program really needs a season that will bring some measure of respect both in the conference and in the community. Too many years now of being lumped in with the irrelevant programs in the conference. Being 1-6 at that point would look really bad, even if the coaches feel there is improvement.

Given what the University of North Dakota represents, there's no reason UND shouldn't be at the top of the Big Sky Conference every year - facilities, coaching, regional (MN, Wi, IL) recruiting, relative budget, etc. should all do that.

Although this year may be a 5-7 or 6-6 year due to some rebuilding, I expect Bubba to have this thing roaring by 2015. Just no reason we shouldn't be in the same category as the Montanas and EWU every single season.

  8. How about the DL or LB. We need someone or someones to step up and perform. Sack leader, TFL's, blitzing demon and Slobknocker push 'em back performers. Whom could this be? Hinojosa, Labatt, Idowu, Walker, Cummings, Ratelle, Nelson.

Hinojosa has the talent to be an absolute force on the d-line, so he's possible. I'm also expecting big things from Ratelle with Coach Schmidt coaching him up.

  9. I also think that Alex Tillman will be a leader on the defense, although he is new so you don't really know about his personality (although I'm not sure they would have taken him if he didn't at least have some leadership characteristics). Seems to have a little bit of that veteran presence. On offense, I'm thinking that RJ McGill will definitely be a leader, as well as Brandon Anderson. Would love one of the QB's to snatch the job and really grow into the leadership role as well.

    Absolutely.

This fall, either Mollberg or Bartels needs to become The Guy and be the man behind center for the next 3 years. Solidifying that position will go a long way towards playoffs in 2015 and 2016.

  10. Ironically, Notre Dame just booted Adidas to the curb and made a new deal with Under Armour. Adidas is definitely #3 in terms of representation in college football, but that doesn't mean they're bad. In all honesty, we just need an apparel/equipment contract with any of the big 3 suppliers. It would go a long way in terms of uniforms, equipment, and coaches apparel.

  11. I just realized UND doesn't play the big 2 teams in conference play in 2016, no Montana, and no Eastern Washington, maybe that could be the year UND challenges for a conference title.

Home vs Cal Poly, SUU, Weber St, NAU.....Away at Montana St, Sac St, Idaho St, UNC

OOC @ Stony Brook, Bowling Green; vs South Dakota

    2016..PLAYOFFS!!!

Sounds good to me! We'll be in good shape that year roster-wise too

  12. The Billings Gazette has been releasing their annual Big Sky Position Rankings http://billingsgazette.com/sports/college/blogs/catgrizinsider/article_12da9404-048b-11e4-acd2-0019bb2963f4.html and so far I don't believe we have landed one on the list. Who from our team will be on the list?

After this season, we'll have some players surprise us and make the list next season. As of now, none are proven. Players that could surprise this year include RB Cedric Simmons, FB Iverson, WR McGill, WR Casey Young, OL Boas, OL Slaight, DL Hinojosa, LB Ratelle,

LB Javen Butler, DB Alex Tillman, DB Cole Reyes, etc.

  13. SFI mentioned they've heard rumors of an all sports Adidas deal. This would be huge. It's another step in the direction of legitimacy. Also Adidias makes the best shoes and unis in the business. This is also huge for the football budget. Now the money they would spend on a new green jersey can be spent on other things like strength training equipment and other behind the scenes things that make a difference. All around this is long overdue.

Adidas owns Reebok, which supplies the hockey team. That is the only reason this would work.

Also, I'd argue both Nike and Under Armour make superior football uniforms, but Adidas certainly isn't bad either.

I believe South Dakota has a deal with Adidas, as well as Wisconsin and Michigan, and they all have fine uniforms and equipment.

    Let's get this deal done!

  14. I noticed some guys who were mentioned to be gone are still listed- Taj Rich and Marcus Cheatom.

If true, I'm pleased to see those two are returning. During spring ball, I felt that those two could contribute to the defense in 2014. Cheatom is a big-bodied defensive lineman who has potential and Taj Rich also possesses the size necessary to play quality minutes as a linebacker.

  15. I couldn't care less which one starts. As I said before, there are so many other things that need to be straitened out before those guys would have a chance to blossom. Run d and o will go a long way in development of a young qb. Without protection anyone will end up like Derrick Carr.

My post which you quoted says exactly that. I mentioned the defense and running game need to improve, though. That basically means 100% of the problem last year was not the offensive line. Need help from the defense and offensive play calling, too.

  16. Bartles did well, but there were flashes for Mollberg too. Either way, the line will need to be improved and the running game will need to get on track. Couple that with a better defense and a play-action passing game and the QB play should be better.

  17. In the past I could see myself intersted in attending a game on a weekend that UND is out of town - not cheering for them but just for the experience - but not now - just too tainted from the trolls. (About 20 years ago I attended an FU/Morningside game, Morningside returned a kick off to go up 7-0 early and I cheered - then my buddy gave me the look and I sat on my hands as FU routed them the rest of the way.)

I've been to a few NDSU games over the past few seasons. In particular, I went to the NDSU-UNI game in 2011, and the NDSU-Youngstown State game in 2012. Both games were hyped up pretty good and I thought there was a good chance NDSU would lose both times. Unfortunately, NDSU prevailed in both contests, and to make matters worse, I was wearing UND clothing and the margin was not close in 2012.

  18. No way to measure this but what percentage of fans attending FU football games would you guess are neutal, ie; have no affiliation with the university - not an alumn, kids didn't go, etc. I'm thinking that percentage isn't that high (however those would be the first to fall off the wagon also).

I'd say the +/- would be around 500, with the ceiling being around 1000. I know of many individuals who aren't alumni and have no children; however, they are proud North Dakotans who support the current thriving program. 1000 people may not seem like a lot, but that's the difference in driving attendance from an average 8-9k to 9-10k, which is significant. Also, with the state's population and UND's enrollment increasing, it's feasible to see UND average over 11k if they consistently win and make the postseason.

  19. I was also at the MN all star game. The 5 UND recruits looked very good. Too bad Studsrud got hurt early but even his 3 plays looked good. The kickers looked very good. When a UND kid went head to head with a NDSU recruit, our guys looked to be on the wiining side of those battles. I'm new to college football especially the FCS level but I'm excited to watch the Sioux turn this thing around. The school credentials are also impressive. I'm going to enjoy the next 4-5 years as a hard core Sioux supporter.

These are all good things to hear. By emphasizing both local recruiting (ND, MN, WI, SD, Canada, etc.) and a physical mindset (defense and running game), I definitely think Bubba will improve this program a little each and every season.

  20. Some of those players graduated. NDSU has won with several different coaches. And if you think I have a mindset that NDSU will win titles every year you are wrong.

I'll personally just be happy if the boys make the playoffs this year. As long as NDSU has a reasonably good team... Attendance should not be a major problem.

NDSU only won DI championships with one coach and one starting QB, among other players of significance (B. Turner, M. Williams, etc.). What I'm saying is that I expect NDSU to really fall off this year and lose around 3 games or so. Now, if they win the MVFC again, count me in as being one of the first to admit NDSU has a tremendously resilient program; however, I don't think they are any different than the 05-07 Appalachian State teams. That is, they'll fall off and struggle winning playoff games without Bohl.
