UND has had some success, particularly recently, with FBS transfers. Juco transfers? Not so much.
You just can't be afraid to pull the trigger on JUCOs and FBS transfers. Obviously UND needs more talented players, so however UND and Bubba can find them, go for it.
-
Would you care to elaborate?Watching some of Bubba's decisions lately I that must be blind trust.
Only decisions of controversy are the "taking the wind" and "pull the redshirt" decisions. Both of those decisions are perfectly understandable in my opinion. Still comes down to recruiting in my opinion, which means in a year or two we'll actually know the full picture.
-
Haven't seen for myself, but reading the comments about the quality of the Big Sky online network is very poor. You might as well not watch and save some frustration.
You haven't seen it yourself, yet you're saying we shouldn't watch it? That makes zero sense.
It's a great way to watch games all across the BIg Sky Conference. Same can't be said for the almighty MVFC.

NDSU will win a 4th straight national championship this season, or at least they should.Looking at the polls I don't see a team that's going to give the Bison a run, especially with home field throughout. For the Bison guys, how many road playoff games have the Bison won in the last 4-5 year stretch? Was there a win before the Eastern Washington loss? It's a hell of an advantage.
The good thing for UND is home field hasn't seemed to mean much for Sioux/Bison games. The bad thing for UND we might be dipping into our cheer squad with all the injuries.
NDSU has been built up to the best program in FCS football; no question about it. If NDSU ever wants to play with the big boys (FBS), they should start looking for move-up opportunities now while their program is red hot.
As for the UND-NDSU football game next season, it's the 3rd game of the season for UND so hopefully injuries aren't a factor that early in the season. Either way, it will be a very challenging game for UND. Nevertheless, I'm very happy about it because these schools deserve to play an annual game due to proximity and tradition/history.

Bartels is not in full health. Studsrud will get an opportunity to play because the staff wants to see how he improves from game 1 to game 2.I agree. I was under the impression the objective was to play the qb most capable of winning the game.
Day by day.
Like all games this year, if UND wins it will be because of their defense and special teams, not the offense. Too many holes in the offense to try mask with a change at only 1 position (QB).
-
I don't know all the details associated with Bartels' injury but the staff wishes to see how Studsrud does I believe. Also, Bartels is definitely not 100 %Are you saying he's starting because the staff want to see what he can do or because Bartels won't be able to play still?
Will know more after today's press conference but this morning on Tim and Swyg it sounded like Studsrud will get the nod again.
-
I guess my problem with pulling Studsrud redshirt it that I assumed even with Bartles being hurt that it was minor and at most he misses one game. If he is healthy enough to play I can't see Studsrud playing over him at this point.
Studsrud will be starting this Saturday vs. Weber State.
Staff pulled his shirt so they figure they just as well see how he does these last 3 games.
-
Ironic scheduling; right now UND is more of a Weber State-type team than an Eastern Washington-type team. Sad truth for a once proud program (albeit never in the DI days).Just about the only thing I agreed with in that piece was not judging Studsrud after one game.
"We very well could see Studsrud for the final three games of the season. And let’s be honest, these are the three games UND fans should look to in order to define the year."
No, we should not be using games vs Weber, NAU, and UNC to define any year.
Trusting in Bubba's ability to recruit.
-
The offense is devastated by injuries, and prior to the injuries, the offense wasn't very productive to begin with.
2 QBs
3 RBs (Norberg didn't carry the ball vs EWU)
2 WRs (both starters)
1 TE (best receiving target)
Offensive line is patchwork with questionable ability
The positional depth needs to improve for this program before UND will be able to perservere through such adversity; not only offense but also defense. The recruiting moving forward is so key for Bubba and UND; thankfully, it appears this year's recruiting class is coming together alright. IPF doesn't hurt either.

Well Ira, I would prefer personal comments and credentials be an unnecessary prerequisite of this discussion, but if you want to imply such an inclusion so be it. I've coached and watched North Dakota HS football for years, and in my opinion, I don't believe Hanson is a DI quarterback. It is what it is.Then maybe focus on Studsrud's talents. I agree the decision about Hanson "goes without saying" except you felt it important to say it. Most fans already figured it out. You don't know I have been overly optimistic about Mollberg. You think you do. I don't know how he will continue to develop but I know he has the potential. It wasn't just me, it was Bohl and Vigen who wanted him badly as well as other D1 coaches who saw the potential. I watched him play in HS so I have seen the potential. Obviously you and Mussman weren't quite convinced. Bubba disagreed and so do I. Doesn't mean I'm not realistic but I think I understand the importance of the team play and how that can affect what the QB can do. Mollberg was starting to play much better after the MState game. Bartels and Studsrud both struggled when they played, In fact between them they threw 5 ints. and no TD's the last 2 games. Despite that I think they are both capable. I'm not irrational and I think given protection and a semblance of a running game both Mollberg and Bartels are Big Sky caliber players. Not fair to judge Studsrud yet. I confess, I don't play Madden and I'm not in a fantasy FB league, but we need to get a better supportive cast before you toss anyone under the bus.
As for said comments, your balancing act between promoting Mollberg and equally criticizing the other UND quarterbacks is quite obvious. Coming after me because I'm familiar with North Dakota high school football and on record making a comment regarding a student-athlete I witnessed play ND HS football is a bit hypocritical, particularly because your familiarity with DL HS football is often recited by you.
UND is what there record says it is; 3-6. They are not a good football club and they need to improve. That will come both with recruiting and getting injured players back healthy.
-
My comments were addressing the notion that Hanson should've played yesterday rather than Studsrud. Obviously, the coaches disagreed with that idea and played Studsrud because he is the better player between himself and Hanson. Hanson has been in the program much longer than Studsrud and yet he didn't get the nod; that should speak for itself.
I understand positive morale and such, but sometimes you have to see things for how they really are. I know you have been overly optimistic about Joe Mollberg and his potential as a DI QB for UND, despite Mollberg's inconsistent play before he suffered the unfortunate achilles injury. Best luck to Joe on his recovery.
Bottom line, UND needs new players (i.e., recruits) because there are a very few All-Big Sky caliber players on the roster. As for the current student-athletes, development is key and I'm confident in the program Bubba is instituting.

Big surprise today? You expected 54-3? I realized before the game that it would be very difficult to win, but losing this bad is horrible. How about 28-3? Or 35-10? This is an absolute horrible showing by UND today.I understand what you are saying, but what's the big surprise here today? EWU's offense has been putting up astronomical numbers all season long and UND is one injury away from pulling students out of the stands to play some positions. And count me as part of the group wondering why a guy's redshirt was burned today for this debacle...
Now, I understand the odds were stacked against UND today, but people need to stop making excuses so that they can still live in their own little customized world. Something needs to change for UND, and I'm hoping it will be the quality of recruits brought in. That can hopefully happen over the next couple years.

Which broadcast team? watch big sky? I'm only watching not listening to either.

I may be blamed for agreeing with the broadcast team or jumping to brash conclusions, but I really am not impressed with the play-calling. Rudolph has been inept all season doing it. Now, the offensive injuries are really hampering and I understand that, but I still think Bubba needs to be conscious of this and the jury should still be out on Rudolph.

I never expected UND to win this game, but this is tough to watch/listen to. I know it's a rebuilding year, but it's still really really hard to continually watch THE University of North Dakota continually get outplayed. It's really sickening.

17-0 EWU
Game appears over before halftime.

Why the hell would we waste studsruds redshirt. Just stupid. I would rather have Hanson start.
It's not a waste. And Hanson is not a DI QB
-
Play your best players. The seniors deserve it. The fans deserve it. The program deserves it.
I fully agree
-
Strength program has always been questionable at UND since going DI. Important to note that the strength staff is the one carry over from the horrible Mussman era.My opinion is it's both - players and strength conditioning coach both need to step it up in the off season.
NDSU's strength and conditioning program has been spot on in recent years.
IPF should help all this for UND though. Top facility that will get the players more excited about working and improving.
-
Just want to see how the team looks coming off a loss, facing a top-10 opponent on the road, and perhaps facing adversity at the QB position.
If UND plays tough and competitive, that'll be telling in what Bubba is doing with his team's mental status and enthusiasm to play. If UND gets blown out of the water, I'll be a little concerned.
-
Right on.Just for fun I went and took a look at the SDSU message board to see how many bison fans are posting about their big game against their true rival this weekend. I didn't look at the posts, but the Dakota Marker thread has 9 pages (81 posts) total. Compare that to this thread at 28 pages and 550+ posts...and that's not even counting the other threads that have been shut down since the announcement of next years games a couple months ago. I can see how the Bison fans think SDSU is their rival and UND means nothing to them.
NDSU fans don't even realize they want the rivalry game played, like I mentioned earlier.
-
If someone accuses me of being insane, that's probably right on.
UND 28
EWU 24
-
Wow, NDSU fans don't like something until they try it? The two schools have played 110 times by my count.
We've tried it ... we don't like it..
You tried it and didn't like it because NDSU usually lost?
-
Wrong. NDSU does not want an annual game against a non conference FCS opponent. Takes away from having a bye, 6 home games, and being able to schedule either an FBS school or a top tier FCS school.
It is not good for the program at NDSU and does not follow the model we currently have in place that is enabling us to be the best FCS program.
Want the game annually? Join the MV like the rest of the Dakota schools.
You're that predictable person I was talking about; NDSU wins next season and you'll want the game every season. UND wins and you'll be even more against it.

That was Mussman's issue; just too much attrition. If Bubba can get all of his recruits to stick around and develop, it will create good depth and produce championship caliber teams. It worked for him at UMD.
For example, if UND didn't lose all of the departures over the last couple years, UND might not be so bad (more depth at WR and CB). If all these true freshmen playing now stick around and play together as juniors and seniors, UND will be very competitive and perhaps good.
