  1. Seems like Aeron Carr has been leaving the program since the day he got here last year. It's the point that he may as well go as this constant babbling is a distraction. To paraphrase Yodi, go or don't go, but make up your mind. Carr leaving will hurt, the question is how much and how steps in?

Carr didn't make the two-deep, and of those that did, 2 are true freshman and the other true freshman (Luke Stanley) almost had his shirt pulled too. The position should be okay to good moving forward. Remember, Casey Young and RJ McGill are capable too.

  2. San Jose State has plenty of youth on their squad, including a first time starting QB, a young o-line, and their leading rusher from last year is suspended. And to top it off, I think UND's best unit this season will definitely be their defense due to the coaching emphasis and talent (Carrothers, Hinojosa, Ratelle, Tillman, Reyes, etc.).

I expect a win or a close game; nothing else. Remember, no more Mussman; there's an actual leader in charge now in Bubba.

    Go UND!

  3. The deal is certainly not perfect due to no home and home; that makes no sense whatsoever and it demonstrates the arrogant mindset of the NDSU athletic program. Anyone, especially NDSU fans, thinking NDSU deserves two games in Fargo are oblivious to the general rules of college football scheduling. Nevertheless, there is one positive from this and that is the game finally will be played.

UND supporters who continue to make this a big issue exude a lack of confidence in UND's football program. Continuing to bicker and bash UND's athletic's department only demonstrates your lack of confidence in the trajectory of UND football. If Coach Schweigert, the IPF, and the increased coaching salary are worth anything at all, we should see improvement this season and further improvement in 2015 - the season we play NDSU. With that, it's time to support UND football and hope for steady and sure improvement. If that happens, 2015 will be closer than anyone on here predicts and 2019 could be a completely different scenario in terms of the program's respective perceptions.

Bottom line: Let's just hope that the football program is improving year in and year out and that UND football will be a top 4 Big Sky team (Montana, Montana State, Eastern Washington, UND) within a few years. If not, the administration is then doing something wrong.

I guess I care more about the on-the-field product than the lousy administrative crap. Eventually, UND will even things out with NDSU on the field. If not 2015, likely 2019. If production doesn't happen in a few years, then obviously more changes need to be made (renovations, coaching salary, etc.).

  4. The Weber State comparison is getting old.

    2013:

    Sac State:

43-6 over Weber, 31-7 over UND

    Eastern Washington:

41-19 over Weber, 35-14 over UND

    Portland State:

45-24 over Weber, 14-10 over UND

    Montana:

42-6 over Weber, 55-17 over UND

    Montana State:

34-16 over Weber, 63-20 over UND

Utah at least has some mountains to visit while on the trip...

UND will beat Weber State this year and from now on. In terms of football, UND is the way better program.

Yes, beating Valparaiso clearly makes UND the better program of the two...

Again, you're delusional if you think Weber State has the better program.

    Weber State All-time record: 262–275–3(.488)

    North Dakota All-time record: 603–356–30(.625)

  5. Hey, I would love to see strong line play. Just have not seen it for a couple of years. Anderson is the only starter that I have seen descent play out of the rest not so much:

Barton, and Meehan have played OK

Hanson got pushed around as a NG - not sure how that translates to anything decent as G.

    Boas unknown

    DLine

Carrothers and Cummings have done nothing

    Hinojosa unknown

I agree that any player may improve from year to year. But, you are asking for 5 very average players to step up in one season. I just don't think that is going to happen. I will be watching on Thursday night. Not trying to be a hater. But, no much to cheer about recently.

It's a new season; a lot can happen in one year. Not saying this season will have a winning record or anything, but the brand of football should be significantly better than the Mussman era.

  6. Looking at the EWU/SHSU score and reading about the game, wouldn't UND's ascent up the BSC food chain be accomplished quickest via a stout defense vs a high flying offense? Seems to me you guys will do well if Bubba can put together anything resembling a defense.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bubba's philosophy.

The Big Sky Conference consists mainly of air raid/spread offenses and hybrid defenses built to stop the air attacks, so being as physical outlier would really ascend the program quickly. That is, by establishing a physical, ball control offense and a pressure defense, UND has a chance to be "that" physical team in the Big Sky. Montana went from spread to pro style from 2012 to 2013 and they instantly turned around from 5 to 10 wins. Of course, they also gained their QB Jordan Johnson back too. Nevertheless, Bubba's plan should work great in the Big Sky Conference. Goal needs to be to win the Bog Sky Conference every season, as it's an automatic qualifying league that should include 3 to 4 teams in the playoffs annually.

  7. I'm familiar with Rocky...forgot the quote. Still disagree with the statement. Does Alabama remember losing to LSU in the SEC championship game a few years ago...or do they remember smoking the Tigers a couple of weeks later in the national championship game?

I wouldn't say Alabama-LSU is that big of rivalry since its interstate; now, Alabama and Auburn on the other hand is a different story....

Auburn beating Alabama last year on that ridiculous final play will always be a memory for Alabama....

  8. Respectfully disagree. Will baseball recruits see more highlights of UND beating NDSU or NDSU playing #1 Oregon State on TV in the college baseball tournament? Will basketball recruits see more of UND beating NDSU or the Bison defeating Oklahoma in the NCAA tournament?

The "national championship rings hollowing" statement is a quote from Rocky Hager, coach of NDSU football from 1987 to 1996.

  9. UND fans are very tolerent of mediocrity and lack of championships. When things started to go south with Mussman with the Sioux Falls debacle, critisism of Muss met stiff resistance here on the forum, with supporters of keeping on and hoping things got better out in force. One football "expert" on the forum would regulairly confront people with the "what is the highest level you played" argument - insinuating that if you didn't spend at least a couple of years on the Viking's Taxi squad you had no football knowledge. We were content to let a poor hiring decision turn into what looks now like a decade long rat hole. Teams not getting it done - hey let's hope next year is better. We don't demand success, we just hope for the best.

    Absolutely.

In my perfect world, UND makes football just as big as their hockey. In order to do that, they need to keep on adding on. That means indoor practice facility, both phase I and phase II, along with increased coaching salary pool and Alerus Center football renovations. In reality, all of these things have improved or are online as of now, so one would like to think improvement is imminent.

  10. Not quite.  It's a long story....too long for this thread :)

How many NFL players (that actually play)...suited up for the bison in the past 10 years?  Obviously, we don't need to go into UND hockey players playing in the NHL or what their total salaries are.  I am just more curious.

You're comparing Fargo to New York City here.

    There's no comparison.

Yeah the NHL is a top professional league, but its no where near the juggernaut that the NFL and football is. Having 10 alumni play in the NHL is equal to having 3 alumni play in the NFL...

  11. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.  From what I have read here the arrogance is coming from the Bison fans.  Like I said earlier, I cheered for the Bison to win those natty's. More out of pride for the state.  I am more of a D-1A football fan.  I simply think it's a good idea for these two teams to play.  I just find it odd there could be such arrogance from a fanbase at this level of play.  This decision seems obvious to me, however by no means am I an FCS expert.  Done trolling :)

I dislike bison trolls and, well, most NDSU fans in general, but this is a problem.

UND hockey fans say they support North Dakota by cheering for NDSU in football, and yet they say they are more of a FBS fan. If you want to support North Dakota, support UND's football team along with UND hockey. UND hockey and UND football are run by the same athletic department; that's not the case with UND hockey and NDSU football. You're doing UND a disservice by supporting NDSU football - if you really want to support UND and UND hockey, you'll support all of UND's athletics.

  12. From what I gather, UND hockey has been pretty second tier (in a 54 team league) of late save for that lucky run at the end of last year.

    Amirite?!

Second tier in a "54 team" league?

UND hockey is not even close to second tier.

UND was not lucky last year, or basically any year for that matter. They regularly advance to the NCAA tournament. For you to understand, that's like a Duke or Michigan State in NCAA basketball.

UND competes against major schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Miami (OH), etc. when they compete in the NCAA tournament. That makes that "54 team" NCAA hockey landscape every bit as powerful as the FCS football classification, being most FCS schools are tiny and good at maybe one sport (Towson, Sam Houston State, Eastern Washington, etc. etc. etc.).

  13. This one made me chuckle. Hate to spoil your joke here....but nobody outside of small town schools even knows the FCS exists.  Second tier football is tough to watch unless it's the only thing to watch I guess.  When does hockey start up?

Sorry to all the UND football fans...but this is an accurate statement.  I just hate hearing Bison fans think they are some sort of top tier football team. Top tier football teams play in top tier leagues.

FCS football is just as popular as NCAA hockey, perhaps even more so. Football is the king sport in the USA; hockey is fourth at best. Add all that up and you have FCS football being a lot more meaningful than hockey-only fans want it to be.

  14. Bottom line-you seem ready to give next year's team a "solid chance" to go to Fargo and win next year.

Based on what I have seen up until today, I would put that more like a "slim chance".

    That's where we disagree.

edit: but we agree on a helluvalot more than we disagree, so let's leave it there.

With a new head coach and the loss of several seniors, we don't even know how NDSU is going to be this season, nonetheless next season in 2015.

There are several variables at play for both squads. Given the nature of the rivalry and the current situation of both teams, it will be a close, hard-fought game IMO.

    Go UND!

    UND Proud

  15. Another reason why UND needs NDSU. If that happens it gives UND exposure that otherwise would never get. Pretty simple actually.

FCS playoffs and Big Sky Roots Sports coverage also provides national coverage...

So again, that argument doesn't work.

UND doesn't need the rivalry game, but it does help their exposure - no question.

  16. It's called they guys we have seen play have stunk out the joint.

The ones we haven't seen play, haven't played.

You've lost yourself in this argument.

I never once said this team is going to light it up this season, but rather I simply stated the roster makeup will allow for improvement from 2014 to 2015.

Now, if UND does go around .500 this season, then 2015 should be an above average season.

There's a difference between being good in 2014 versus being able to improve from 2014 to 2015

I've seen predictions here from 3 wins this year to the optimistic 5 or 6 wins. Are you revising that to 6-8 wins this year? Not sure how a 3 win team could be looked at as having a solid chance down there next year, but who knows.

    #buyitout

What you stated here is where the confusion starts. I never said the team will go over .500 in 2014, although I obviously hope they do, but I did state there will be improvement from this year to next year.

We do not play NDSU this season; it is in 2015 which allows for improvement and further development.

  17. You've got to be joking right? Look at the roster? I've been down that road before. No thanks.

How about we wait and see how they look when they've played some meaningful downs first.

Let's chat about it on Oct 5th.

    Its called class makeup

Edit: if you are a UND alumnus/fan/supporter, your pessimism is part of the problem. UND football needs a passionate support system with optimism and a vision - not people who bash everything that goes on and then stay home on game day.

Get out there and support the team on Saturdays, especially now that UND has a competent leader in Bubba who is leading the program down the right path.

  18. Why? Because NDSU is doing UND a favor. Helping them get their program back on its feet and getting the city back interested in college football not just hockey. Be happy NDSU agreed.

That's bull$%!# and you know it.

UND football is getting better every single week with Bubba at the helm, making winning the Big Sky and making the playoffs possible, which would certainly interest Grand Forks big time.

How can you say it wouldn't when UND hasn't been in the playoffs since 2007 and hasn't had a winning season in the Big Sky? You know better - UND football would be right with UND hockey if they could win the Big Sky.

  19. I've seen predictions here from 3 wins this year to the optimistic 5 or 6 wins. Are you revising that to 6-8 wins this year? Not sure how a 3 win team could be looked at as having a solid chance down there next year, but who knows.

    #buyitout

If this year's team goes 5-7 or 6-6 this season, then 2015 will be a playoff year for UND.

    Mark it down...

Now, if UND goes 3-9 or 4-8 this season, they still will improve in 2015 to around .500 or so. Just look at the makeup of the roster...

  20. Let the good ole boys decide whose on the hot seat. Trust us.

If Mr. Brian Jones don't get after it this season, you good ole boys best have a meeting.

  21. Per Dom Izzo, Johannesson has committed to Minnesota.

Not necessarily a surprise. Figured it would come down to Minnesota or Nebraska; tough to turn down legitimate Big 10 offers.
