  1. I don't want to call Bohl's offense conservative, but I think ball-control mindset first applies.

I've long believed with the college 40 second play clock too many teams are trying to "track meet" it. They should be looking to pound it. Why?

Say you get the ball on the minus 20: 80 yards to a TD.

If you get 3.33 yards every 40 seconds* you'll have chewed through 24 plays at 40 seconds per: 960 seconds. That's over a quarter, and a TD. And the other team's defense got hit 24 times.

If your defense can get a three-and-out after that, look out.

*A first down every three plays.

There's no question ball control helps a lot of fronts. It's helps the defense with increased TOP, it prevents penalties due to less opportunities/less snaps, and of course it prevents turnovers.

Nevertheless, some teams prefer points due to a porous defense and they have the athletes to play up-tempo no huddle but not the bruising backs and offensive linemen to pound the ball.

  2. Really looking forward to seeing how the team performs. I have a feeling the offense will not be able to run the ball much (I really don't trust the right side of the line) and will have to rely on the short passing game to move the chains. Would love to be proven wrong on the running game, but I don't see it. Defensively, we have so many new starters and contributors that it will be interesting to see how everyone gels and if we can put together a solid effort. By all indications the defense is miles ahead of where we were last year and playing quite agressive. I really wish we were a little deeper on the d-line for the first couple games, but maybe some of the people pushed into some playing time will surprise. Like everyone else, I really want to see us be competitive and cut down on stupid penalties. And please, please, please no cocking off after giving up a 12 yard reception for a first down.

Although the right side of the line is a bit shaky, the left side of Devin Barton and Brandon Anderson is more than capable. With that, I expect UND to have at least moderate success running the ball. UND has to or else it will be hard to have success offensively. Plus, no reason San Jose State should give our offensive line too many fits; their defensive line is more of a pass rushing line than run stopping line, IMO.

  3. To be noted, the following players will be making their first college start for San Jose State on Thursday:

    QB Blake Jurich, Sr.

    LG Jeremiah Kolone, Fr.

    RG Nate Velichko, Fr.

    RT Evan Sarver, So.

    RB Thomas Tucker, So.

    DE Adrian Blake, Sr.

    LB William Ossai, Fr.

SS Akeem King, 5th yr Sr.

    P Michael Carrizosa, Fr.

What this tells me is that San Jose State's offensive line will be young and inexperienced; that should certainly help out UND's defense. Also, San Jose State's defense will have a few new faces on a unit that was not very good last year (35.1 ppg allowed in 2013; 105th in FBS). Lastly, UND will not be the only team in the game relying on a freshman punter.

    GO UND!!

  4. The fact that people are upset about the NDSU games is, in my opinion, ridiculous.  It needed to be done.  Its been a long time coming and things should have never gotten to this point.  Who cares if the first two games are in Fargo.  Its not like they are in back to back years and we are getting paid to do it with virtually no expenses.  If you take NDSU out of it and just say we are getting paid $125,000 to drive one hour to play the best team in the FCS people would be ecstatic.  But since its NDSU some people are butt hurt about it.

I applaud Bubba and Faison.  They did what needed to be done and the overwhelming majority of people are happy about it.  I look forward to both games and future games that will undoubtedly be played in both Fargo and Grand Forks in the coming future.

    Well said; I agree.

  5. Just listened to the Monday press conference; featured MLB Will Ratelle and Bubba.

Both Ratelle and Bubba emphasized increased discipline from the beginning of fall camp to now. Ratelle even went as far as to say that from last year to this year, the defense is more disciplined and runs to the ball better (gang tackling will greatly improve run defense).

Bubba said the team has greatly improved in the penalty department since the beginning of camp, as well.

I expect the team to be ready and produce a close game on Thursday; both Bubba and Ratelle seemed confident, but yet unsure what the team will ultimately look like come Thursday. It was reassuring in my mind to hear Bubba say that the coaching staff is ready to make adjustments come game time; that in itself is an improvement from Mussman. I'm not sure Mussman and his staff were regularly prepared for the chess match that occurs between football coaches on gameday.

The unknown factor is very suspenseful but yet exciting at the same time! Go UND!

  6. Idaho was a horrible matchup for us. They could pass really well and we couldn't do a damn thing about it.

Mussman screwed that game up. Idaho went 2-10 that season and yet we got blown out.

The defense self-destructed and the offense couldn't produce.

  7. UND Colorado, you seem to be high on Young....any word on why he can't crack the lineup?

RJ McGill and Brandon Walker are talented players. McGill was always "better" than Young due to his playing time even when Hardin and Jameer Jackson were around. Young will play a lot this year; he's technically 3rd on the depth chart.

  8. When Young got here as a freshman, I really thought he would be an impact player. Sadly, it seems like he is now caught in the middle of the coaching change. They really seem to like their recruiting class and want to see them play (obviously). I watched a lot of practices between Spring and Fall ball and thought Young looked pretty solid. Watching Fall ball, it is very evident that they want their recruits to make an impact. I also agree with geaux-sioux on Ivery. He too has paid his dues and has been pretty solid but under the radar in Fall camp. My fear is that with an very questionable offensive line, this team could find itself forced away from their "pound the ball" strategy. If they are trailing in games, they are going to forced to throw the ball and these freshmen receivers may be a bit exposed.

Can look at it two ways:

1)Offensive line is poor so they have to throw it.

    2) Look at big picture and hope defense keeps game close so the offense can still run the ball.

Last year's staff gave up on the run, but Bubba won't do that. They understand they need to run to ensure solid defense due to TOP. Plus the o-line should be more physical than last year cause they understand the run game emphasis.

  9. Also remember, we are playing an FBS team on the road. If we at least play them tough (especially if we win or lose by single digits), then there's a legitimate chance we win the next 3 and start 3-1.

Point is, have faith in the leadership and philosophy of Bubba. Let's not celebrate or panic til we see the product on the field.

  10. How the hell does that work? We play tough against a Texas Tech team from the Big 12 but get destroyed by WAC member Idaho. Hopefully Bubba can get us an FBS win and confidence back in this program that has been lost since 2007.

We'll play tough and compete right to the end. With that effort, I'm sure the San Jose State game will be relatively close. Hopefully in a close game, we end up on top.

  11. Seems like Aeron Carr has been leaving the program since the day he got here last year. It's the point that he may as well go as this constant babbling is a distraction. To paraphrase Yodi, go or don't go, but make up your mind. Carr leaving will hurt, the question is how much and how steps in?

Carr didn't make the two-deep, and of those that did, 2 are true freshman and the other true freshman (Luke Stanley) almost had his shirt pulled too. The position should be okay to good moving forward. Remember, Casey Young and RJ McGill are capable too.

  12. San Jose State has plenty of youth on their squad, including a first time starting QB, a young o-line, and their leading rusher from last year is suspended. And to top it off, I think UND's best unit this season will definitely be their defense due to the coaching emphasis and talent (Carrothers, Hinojosa, Ratelle, Tillman, Reyes, etc.).

I expect a win or a close game; nothing else. Remember, no more Mussman; there's an actual leader in charge now in Bubba.

    Go UND!

  13. The deal is certainly not perfect due to no home and home; that makes no sense whatsoever and it demonstrates the arrogant mindset of the NDSU athletic program. Anyone, especially NDSU fans, thinking NDSU deserves two games in Fargo are oblivious to the general rules of college football scheduling. Nevertheless, there is one positive from this and that is the game finally will be played.

UND supporters who continue to make this a big issue exude a lack of confidence in UND's football program. Continuing to bicker and bash UND's athletic's department only demonstrates your lack of confidence in the trajectory of UND football. If Coach Schweigert, the IPF, and the increased coaching salary are worth anything at all, we should see improvement this season and further improvement in 2015 - the season we play NDSU. With that, it's time to support UND football and hope for steady and sure improvement. If that happens, 2015 will be closer than anyone on here predicts and 2019 could be a completely different scenario in terms of the program's respective perceptions.

Bottom line: Let's just hope that the football program is improving year in and year out and that UND football will be a top 4 Big Sky team (Montana, Montana State, Eastern Washington, UND) within a few years. If not, the administration is then doing something wrong.

I guess I care more about the on-the-field product than the lousy administrative crap. Eventually, UND will even things out with NDSU on the field. If not 2015, likely 2019. If production doesn't happen in a few years, then obviously more changes need to be made (renovations, coaching salary, etc.).

  14. The Weber State comparison is getting old.

    2013:

    Sac State:

43-6 over Weber, 31-7 over UND

    Eastern Washington:

41-19 over Weber, 35-14 over UND

    Portland State:

45-24 over Weber, 14-10 over UND

    Montana:

42-6 over Weber, 55-17 over UND

    Montana State:

34-16 over Weber, 63-20 over UND

Utah at least has some mountains to visit while on the trip...

UND will beat Weber State this year and from now on. In terms of football, UND is the way better program.

Yes, beating Valparaiso clearly makes UND the better program of the two...

Again, you're delusional if you think Weber State has the better program.

    Weber State All-time record: 262–275–3(.488)

    North Dakota All-time record: 603–356–30(.625)

  15. Hey, I would love to see strong line play. Just have not seen it for a couple of years. Anderson is the only starter that I have seen descent play out of the rest not so much:

Barton, and Meehan have played OK

Hanson got pushed around as a NG - not sure how that translates to anything decent as G.

    Boas unknown

    DLine

Carrothers and Cummings have done nothing

    Hinojosa unknown

I agree that any player may improve from year to year. But, you are asking for 5 very average players to step up in one season. I just don't think that is going to happen. I will be watching on Thursday night. Not trying to be a hater. But, no much to cheer about recently.

It's a new season; a lot can happen in one year. Not saying this season will have a winning record or anything, but the brand of football should be significantly better than the Mussman era.

  16. Looking at the EWU/SHSU score and reading about the game, wouldn't UND's ascent up the BSC food chain be accomplished quickest via a stout defense vs a high flying offense? Seems to me you guys will do well if Bubba can put together anything resembling a defense.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bubba's philosophy.

The Big Sky Conference consists mainly of air raid/spread offenses and hybrid defenses built to stop the air attacks, so being as physical outlier would really ascend the program quickly. That is, by establishing a physical, ball control offense and a pressure defense, UND has a chance to be "that" physical team in the Big Sky. Montana went from spread to pro style from 2012 to 2013 and they instantly turned around from 5 to 10 wins. Of course, they also gained their QB Jordan Johnson back too. Nevertheless, Bubba's plan should work great in the Big Sky Conference. Goal needs to be to win the Bog Sky Conference every season, as it's an automatic qualifying league that should include 3 to 4 teams in the playoffs annually.

  17. I'm familiar with Rocky...forgot the quote. Still disagree with the statement. Does Alabama remember losing to LSU in the SEC championship game a few years ago...or do they remember smoking the Tigers a couple of weeks later in the national championship game?

I wouldn't say Alabama-LSU is that big of rivalry since its interstate; now, Alabama and Auburn on the other hand is a different story....

Auburn beating Alabama last year on that ridiculous final play will always be a memory for Alabama....

  18. Respectfully disagree. Will baseball recruits see more highlights of UND beating NDSU or NDSU playing #1 Oregon State on TV in the college baseball tournament? Will basketball recruits see more of UND beating NDSU or the Bison defeating Oklahoma in the NCAA tournament?

The "national championship rings hollowing" statement is a quote from Rocky Hager, coach of NDSU football from 1987 to 1996.

  19. UND fans are very tolerent of mediocrity and lack of championships. When things started to go south with Mussman with the Sioux Falls debacle, critisism of Muss met stiff resistance here on the forum, with supporters of keeping on and hoping things got better out in force. One football "expert" on the forum would regulairly confront people with the "what is the highest level you played" argument - insinuating that if you didn't spend at least a couple of years on the Viking's Taxi squad you had no football knowledge. We were content to let a poor hiring decision turn into what looks now like a decade long rat hole. Teams not getting it done - hey let's hope next year is better. We don't demand success, we just hope for the best.

    Absolutely.

In my perfect world, UND makes football just as big as their hockey. In order to do that, they need to keep on adding on. That means indoor practice facility, both phase I and phase II, along with increased coaching salary pool and Alerus Center football renovations. In reality, all of these things have improved or are online as of now, so one would like to think improvement is imminent.

  20. Not quite.  It's a long story....too long for this thread :)

How many NFL players (that actually play)...suited up for the bison in the past 10 years?  Obviously, we don't need to go into UND hockey players playing in the NHL or what their total salaries are.  I am just more curious.

You're comparing Fargo to New York City here.

    There's no comparison.

Yeah the NHL is a top professional league, but its no where near the juggernaut that the NFL and football is. Having 10 alumni play in the NHL is equal to having 3 alumni play in the NFL...

  21. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.  From what I have read here the arrogance is coming from the Bison fans.  Like I said earlier, I cheered for the Bison to win those natty's. More out of pride for the state.  I am more of a D-1A football fan.  I simply think it's a good idea for these two teams to play.  I just find it odd there could be such arrogance from a fanbase at this level of play.  This decision seems obvious to me, however by no means am I an FCS expert.  Done trolling :)

I dislike bison trolls and, well, most NDSU fans in general, but this is a problem.

UND hockey fans say they support North Dakota by cheering for NDSU in football, and yet they say they are more of a FBS fan. If you want to support North Dakota, support UND's football team along with UND hockey. UND hockey and UND football are run by the same athletic department; that's not the case with UND hockey and NDSU football. You're doing UND a disservice by supporting NDSU football - if you really want to support UND and UND hockey, you'll support all of UND's athletics.

  22. From what I gather, UND hockey has been pretty second tier (in a 54 team league) of late save for that lucky run at the end of last year.

    Amirite?!

Second tier in a "54 team" league?

UND hockey is not even close to second tier.

UND was not lucky last year, or basically any year for that matter. They regularly advance to the NCAA tournament. For you to understand, that's like a Duke or Michigan State in NCAA basketball.

UND competes against major schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Miami (OH), etc. when they compete in the NCAA tournament. That makes that "54 team" NCAA hockey landscape every bit as powerful as the FCS football classification, being most FCS schools are tiny and good at maybe one sport (Towson, Sam Houston State, Eastern Washington, etc. etc. etc.).
