  1. How bout one..just one win vs a FBS team before this silly talk about potentially going FBS.

    Let's start with that!

Agreed. UND's athletic administration needs to show that they're even serious about winning at the FCS level, first. Even if everything goes according to plan, it will take two to three years before UND is competing for a conference championship.

  2. I'm sure that it has been talked about multiple times on here before, but can anyone tell me why UND keeps playing Montana at home?

Last year's Montana game was a home and home non-conference agreement for the years 2010 and 2013. 2012 and 2014 are conference games that were scheduled as UND home conference games by the Big Sky Conference.

  3. Yes, you are correct. However, after watching the game today, it is clear they rotate a "ton" of guys at nearly every position group.

They graduated a ton of seniors last year too, and much like this year there's a ton of non-seniors that are playing.

Don't focus so much of the number of seniors leaving. Pay more attention to who is playing.

Attrition due to graduation affects every college football team, even almighty NDSU.

  4. SDSU is in a world of hurt in Columbia, down 21-7 midway through the 2nd. Sumner is done with an ankle injury.

    Not now

    SDSU 18

    Mizzou 21

    3rd qtr

South Dakota State is playing real well...

    Edit: now 28 -18

  5. Obviously we were going to look smaller than an FBS team but was it just me or did we look tiny compared to them. Maybe it's the white jerseys.

I didn't think so. Technically our offensive line is bigger than San Jose State's offensive line.

  6. I too like the philosophy of the team. If this makes any sense, we had a willingness to play physical as opposed to previous years when we just looked like wimps. The problem with this team is that the willingness to be physical isn't matched with the physical ability to do so. I know we are beating a dead horse talking about the line play on both sides of the ball but we are outclasses in those two areas but especially the defensive line. In a 34 defense the most important position is the nose. You need a big strong immovable object to make it work. Without it, guards get to the second level and even good linebacker play gives the offense a 3 yard gain. That just isn't good enough. #1 priority for Bubba in recruiting this year has got to be along the defensive line. Even if they are development guys you have got to recruit body frames along the front.

Both sides of ball are important in terms of the lines. If Bubba can keep adding up quality offensive and defensive linemen, the team will improve year after year. Remember, Francis is a young offensive lineman in the program and we get another year with LG Brandon Anderson and RT Sean Meehan; they will improve over the course of the season with footwork and leverage. That will increase the physicality of the oline. Same goes for defensive line with young players like Dranka, Greeley, Harris Carrothers and Hinojosa. This team is young; slow but sure improvement will happen.

  7. Barring injury catastrophes I think we'll look back at this season and be thoroughly impressed with how much better the team is the last week vs the first. There were some good signs last night and I think things will be basically figured out by players and coaches by the end of the year. I'm not saying playoffs but I'm saying by the end of the year we should have a team that would have given SJSU a very competitive game.

Although UND definitely was blown out, I like the way the team looked under Bubba in terms of the attitude and philosophy. I love the physical ground and pound approach on offense and the aggressive mindset on defense. By the end of the season, those "almost" interceptions and "almost" big runs will actually happen, and the team will be much improved … I hope.

  8. I think success in 2014 will have to be measured in something other than wins and losses. Work ethic, attitude when behind, attitude when ahead, discipline (or lack thereof), improvement from game 1 to game 2 and game 2 to game 3 and so on; those will be the things I watch for as the season progresses. It will take 2 to 3 recruiting classes to get the horses to win games against someone other than non-scholarship FCS teams and lower-level Big Sky teams as this is the lowest point we have been since 1986, but if Bubba and his staff can instill good work habits and discipline now, it will become ingrained in the culture of the program (like it was under Thomas and Lennon) and we'll be in the Big Sky Conference and FCS playoff mix in no fewer than 5 years. And yes, 6-6 is a little wishful, but you need to set goals and that is a reachable (though difficult) goal for this team. It would go a long way to getting potential recruits to seriously consider UND in the future.

Going 6-6 is still definitely a possibility, especially with so many young players that may improve exponentially after only a few games.

With that said, going 3-9 or 4-8 is a real possibility too. Hopefully, like you mentioned, the team keeps improving, because the whole squad will basically be back in 2015.

  9. After last night's game, I'm in no position to jump to any conclusions with this game, but I'd like to think this game is just what Bubba and crew need.

After San Jose State ran UND down pretty good, its time to get back to "home sweet home" and have some success.

  10. I will be interested in seeing what happens to the offensive philosophy.  I'm happy to establish the run and play a little smash mouth, but when your first down runs end up with a yard or less, things get dicey.  Our attempts to establish the run ruined our offensive chances for at least the first half.  How long do we keep this philosophy with our line?  Thanks to Muss's fine recruiting, it doesn't look like we will be pounding much of anything against most teams.

No, the offense looked great; exactly what it needs to be like. Yes, the production needs to be much better, but the type of offense is perfect.

Ground and Pound with some play-action

  11. In 2011, after losing to Idaho 44-14, no one gave UND a chance against Fresno State. In 2012, not many had UND playing San Diego State close.

Point is, UND can play with Mountain West teams. Tonight's game will be close.

    Yeah, well, I was wrong.

Nothing else to say about that.

Guess my optimism/homerism overtook my ability to be realistic.

  12. You fans are being too hard on your team .  You will do ok in the Big Sky this season.  I know that some of you , actually most of you are not aware that the Spartans are loaded with three star players and a number of borderline four star players.  Our WR's are very good as you will see as the season  goes  along if you check future Spartan game stats.  That goes for our RB's, LB's, DB's , etc.  We will surprise some teams and sports writers this year.  I know that some of you hate to give much credit to your opponents play.  Just don't be too critical of your coaches or your team as a whole.  Besides you are not expected to go out and defeat BCS teams.  Your team and coaches as well as ours learned a lot from this game and we'll only get better.  We got to play our third team which is important for having better depth.  And your team wasn't shut out !  And no serious injuries for either of us !!  Don't be concerned because you will see very good improvement in your next game.  Good luck the rest of the  !

Thank you for the kind words. I wish you guys the best of luck moving forward.

No one exactly knew the kind of squad UND would have, and well, this team is going to have to improve slowly but surely for a ways. Nevertheless, you guys have a chance to be good this year; good luck!

  13. You were certainly more optimistic over in the predictions thread...it's only one game but this really shows how far out of a Muss-hole Bubba needs to dig out from.. Time...and patience...this is a rebuilding project.

Can't bullsh*t out of this one; the game hasn't been good. Gonna be a rough year I think and Bubba has work to do...

  15. Yup the Sioux Bar in St. Cloud is all set up for it. When I called and asked if he had ESPN3 on any TVs he asked if I was a Sioux fan without me evening sharing that was the game I wanted. It's the Ultimate Sports Bar in Waite Park, MN.

    Nice!

    Go Sioux!

  16. Yawn. You must have an app on your iphone that tells you when I've written something so you can respond...

Bubba may be able to coach, but it'll take more than an attitude change on the sidelines to fix this team - it'll take a year or two and some new players, but hopefully the team is headed in the right direction.

Duke seems to have improved a lot since that 2010 game against Alabama, wouldn't you agree?

I don't agree that this year is lost, though. Yes, UND will improve from 2014 to 2015, but what's the starting point going to actually be here in 2014?

Some college football programs are unable to change "overnight"; that is, it takes a few years to acquire the necessary talent to change the program around in terms of success. However, there are many coaches across the country that can immediately change a team's outlook by changing both discipline and philosophy in the short-term.

Last season, in the FBS, the most specific example that comes to mind is Auburn.  In 2011, Eastern Illinois (FCS - Ohio Valley Conference) went 2-9; in 2012, after hiring Dino Barbers, Eastern Illinois went 7-5. The point is, substantial turnarounds can occur via coaching changes due to a change in philosophy and discipline.

How do you know it will take more than an attitude change to change this team?  UND has talent, whether you want to believe it or not. QB Joe Mollberg, RB Cedric Simmons, WR RJ McGill, TE Zach Adler, LG Brandon Anderson, NG Jordan Hinojosa, LB Will Ratelle, LB Marcus Jenkins-Moore, CB Alex Tillman, S Cole Reyes, etc. etc. etc.

The only question mark is whether or not the youth can play big time football right away or not. Also, the degree of discipline that Bubba has tried to instill.

If UND commits less turnovers and penalties than they did last year, they will instantly be a better team - that is the kind of thing that Bubba and his staff can do to make an immediate impact. It's not like UND was playing perfect football (no turnovers, no penalties) last season and still got blown out; in actuality, UND was shooting themselves in the foot in 2013.

  17. So does that mean that even the best sports bar won't be able to televise ESPN3?

Check with some sports bars; if the bar is willing, they can stream the game from a computer onto TVs. I'm sure at least one bar in GF will be doing this....

  18. Hoping not to cause a thread drift here, but Darrell's incessant obsession with NDSU's downfall forces me to point out what NDSU's "dark decade" looks like.

    NDSU 1990-1999.

    Overall record 88-27

    4 conference championships

    1 National Championship

6 trips to the division 2 playoffs

5-5 record in games against UND

    UND 1990-1999

    Overall record 81-27

    0 National Championships

6 trips to division 2 playoffs

    5-5 records against UND

Couldn't quickly find how many conference championships. But given NDSU won 4 and I believe UNC won 1 or 2. I'll guess it's 4 or 5.

I'll tell you Darrell, if this is what you call the dark years, NDSU is in for a pretty decent decade coming up.

No question NDSU has a long history of success in terms of their football program. All in all, I think the success of a season rides on national championships and conference championships. I think NDSU will go 9-3 this season, and with that record, not only will they likely lose a playoff game, but also they might not win the MVFC - that would be a legitimate drop-off for a team looking for its 25th consecutive victory come Saturday and coming off 3 consecutive NCs.

Will be interesting to see how NDSU responds to a new HC and new QB in 2014.

  19. It's pretty amazing to me that of the nine players listed on the 2-deep on the OL, there are nearly as many either recruited by Bubba, or switched from the defensive line (four), as recruited by the Mussman regime as offensive linemen (five). Mussman and company really did a poor job of recruiting, retaining and developing offensive linemen. It's difficult to understand why things got to this point, given the fact that you shouldn't need to stray too far from the region to find solid players at these positions. I'm still perplexed as to how Mussman's 2012 recruiting class included just one offensive lineman--and he's not even on the roster anymore.

The man straight up failed. In my opinion, he should have been canned after either the 2009 (Sioux Falls) or 2012 (Northern Colorado) seasons. After 2013, it had been too long.
