  1. A season this bad should only end in the dismissal of Jones as head MBB coach. College coaches should just not be able to survive such an horrific season, particularly 9 years into the job. Faison needs to make the right decision here.

  2. Zero percent Jones gets canned....Get real children

    Enlighten us; why?

A losing record doesn't justify a coaching change? Because it seems nearly every AD in America disagrees with you.

  3. A month ago, I'd have said no way. Now? Maybe 50-50. Regardless of circumstances, not a lot of 9th-year coaches with a career record well under .500 survive an 8-22 season, especially given the 1-9 home record vs. division I opponents.

When you mention those three things:

    1) below 0.500 career record

    2) 8-22 season record

    3) 1-9 home record vs DI opponents

... It really makes it hard to support Jones much longer. I think Faison needs to take a long hard look at this, although I doubt he will. I expect Jones back for another season, despite my opinion on Jones' coaching ability.

  4. Hanging out in the big sky and avoiding area rivals keeps und on the verge of not being relevant in FB and BB compared to area rivals. IMO, that's a major mistake, especially with the national attention that the Summit will get in their new building. Talk all you want about FB in the 90's, but scholarship reductions were a big help then. At some point und will need to crawl back to Summit. You are current playing outside your recruiting footprint, and that hurts, especially in FB. For the Bison, und in the big sky and the rivalry on ice has been liberating, and a blessing. In FB, not having to deal with the ugliness of that rival has kept NDSU focused on the bigger picture.

In terms of football, the Big Sky Conference is actually a positive recruiting asset. Playing against the likes of Montana, Montana State, and Eastern Washington, as well as getting to play in California, is a draw to many young student-athletes. The MVFC has better competition as of late, but the BSC is not far behind. Every season the BSC will produce a serious national title contender, and the last few seasons that contender has been Eastern Washington. UND hopes to be that top BSC team in a couple seasons, if not sooner.

As for recruiting footprint, UND still recruits ND and MN the heaviest. That is their calling card, and if UND is winning, student-athletes from the regional footprint will gladly play BSC football and not think twice about what they're "missing" in the MVFC. The whole "out of footprint" thing is completely overblown from a conference standpoint. The member schools and travel opportunities make up for that in the BSC. Also, the Summit is a low-major league; it won't be getting any major attention like you speak of. Yes, the tourney is held in a nice new facility, but that doesn't change national perception. Tons of conference tourneys are held in large, state-of-the-art venues. The BSC allows the top school to host the tourney, which if UND acquired, would be great for the city of GF and attendance would be top notch.

  5. Ya, I gave Schmitty some crap about that. Other than being out gunned a little physically they had a LB blowing assignment after assignment. Then, other guys try to start compensating for that, then you end up with a cluster F.

You'd have to imagine the plan will be to stop the run and make Wentz beat you; however, that's dangerous territory as well.

As a coaching friend once told me, when you pass the ball, three things can happen, and two of those things are bad. Focus should likely be to stop the run and bring pressure on Wentz, hoping for a sack fumble or deflected pass resulting in an interception. UND's defense will need to create turnovers for UND to have a shot.

  6. In a previous discussion about basketball in REA, DakotaDan once posted a rendering he made (which I cannot find right now) that placed the basketball court right up against either the North or South permanent seats in REA. The scoreboard would not be centered over the basketball court, but it basically created a horseshoe around the court using the REA's permanent seating on 3 sides, with portable bleachers on the open end.

If basketball were played in the Ralph on a semi regular basis, I think a format like this would be the way to go. If you had a big curtain to hang behind the portable bleachers, you'd probably reduce capacity to around 8,000 or so creating a more intimate feel, and placing fans closer to the action.

Still, I am of the opinion that some minor upgrades to the Betty would be far more ideal, and realistic.

Upgrading the Betty is a must, so when is it going to happen?

Video boards for score, player stats, advertisements, and replays are necessary. Also, larger bleachers at the ends of the court to create a more "enclosed" setting.

These things need to happen because high schools are starting to surpass the Betty in amenities.

  7. We will have a tough time scoring, unless our offense is vastly improved. I think our offense will be improved (wouldn't be too hard) but I'm just not sure how much. Since we have so many unknowns and don't even know who will be our starting QB in that game as of now, my early thought is 30-10 NDSU. Hoping by game day I'll have reason to think it will be closer than that.

    I agree.

Defense will be tough again this year but the offense is a question mark. After games against Wyoming and Drake, everyone should have a better idea how UND's offense will match up against NDSU's defense.

  8. For every bad report or story their exists countless good ones- I will share some tidbits, not all inclusive.

We have a 258 lb. LB running in the 'fastest' training group, top 5. How teams plan on blocking Ratelle next year will be interesting.

Flowers has been looking good and could contend for some playing time at corner, he will be a Sophomore only.

Alex Reed and the safety Johnson are impressing coaches. Look for both to start. Both are running in the top group, along with Reyes.

Cox is crushing it in the weight room for the O line.

3 deep at nose with Woodsmall, Gopher kid who's name I can't spell, and Tank. Should be a good rotation.

I will butcher these names but Bakker and Disterhaupt are not only solid backup options at LB, but could be pushing for starting jobs.

Film study film study for the QBs, mum is the word on who's going to be the man come fall. Stay tuned.

Arrington said UND workouts and way harder than what they did at UAB.

Nate is going to update on twitter the results of testing this spring. He knows we enjoy the numbers and updates......

That was long, I've got the munchies.

So with the likely suspension or dismissal of Clive Georges, would you say it's safe to say Alex Reed will be the #1 WR to start the 2015 season?
  9. How would they handle scheduling between UND hockey, basketball, ND high school hockey tournament, youth hockey, and maybe concerts. Seems like a lot to put in one building.

High school hockey/concerts are very few and far between. Again, UW and Kohl Center host concerts too. The REA can still host concerts and high school events no problem; they have a staff for just REA events!

  10. "Nodakhoops" made a convincing argument and hit all the key points.

If Wisconsin can use the Kohl Center for both MBB and hockey, why not UND?

Yes, attendance will not be "full" in terms of the REA full capacity, but the total attendance will still be greater than the Betty will bring and the amenities are much better in the REA. A progressive, ambitious AD would make the MBB to REA switch happen.

  11. Regarding basketball at REA, they did play all of their NCC games in the Ralph in 2004-05.  That was the year after the XDSU's left, so there were only six games.  The games in REA drew about 3,900.  The non-conference games in the Betty that year drew 2,048

Proof that the REA draws more than the Betty in terms of attendance (obvious why it would seem).

The REA should host a few MBB games every season; my opinion for the reasons mentioned above. Faison should look into this.

  12. The big thing is, if you replace Jones and don't up the salary substantially, you still get the same quality guy IMO. I'm not convinced we are ready to take the big step and get the salary in line with where it needs to be and can we afford to increase the $$$ and pay Jones for the next 2 years? I'm still leaning towards giving Jones one more year and the understanding things need to be a whole lot better next year.

Remember, we need to start paying stipends next year, so money is going to be flowing out much faster than in the past.

    This is not entirely true.

Yes, UND may have to up the salary slightly, by maybe 20-30K, but there are plenty of proven DII winners out there looking for a shot at DI basketball. Remember, the game of basketball is still the same from DII to DI, just more competition. Jones did not demonstrate any head coach winning ability prior to his hire; DII coaches making less have at least won games and made good game-time decisions.

  13. A change absolutely needs to be made after this season, or else the inevitable will just happen this time next season.

Brian Jones has an overall record, from 2006 to the present, of 126-151. That's well under 0.500 after 9 seasons, and all coaching removals can be justified by losing, particularly if the sample size is large enough.

From 2006-2008 in the DII NCC, Jones mustered out a 26-32 overall record and a measly 5-20 conference record. From 2008 to 2012, in the Great West Conference (where competition is especially weak), Jones and UND went 60-64 overall and 24-22 in the conference. As a member of the Big Sky Conference, an automatic bid DI league that gives UND basketball a great opportunity, Jones and UND have gone 41-55 overall and 28-29 in the conference. All records are unacceptable and should certainly support the removal of Jones.

For those who suggest this a rebuilding year, I do not agree. UND went 0.500 in 2013-2014, so there should be improvement from that, not descent. Also, UND and Jones have recruited and developed poorly. The starting lineup is not absent of talent and experience; it includes 6th year Sr. Jaron Nash, DI Transfer Jr. Estan Tyler, and DI Transfer Jr. Terrel de Rouen. Also, coming off the bench, is Sr. Lenny Antwi. Lastly, there is a waste of potential and/or spots with Jr. Benton not even playing, and last year rotation players Sr. Calcaterra and Sr. Salmonson not even playing. The team is a mess and its because Jones did not develop and plan out his roster accordingly. This horrific 8-21 (4-13) season is largely on him.

  14. Need time to grow.

I understand. Just as Jones allowed for the growth of Huff, Webb, Schuler, Brekke, and Anderson over their four year career? Oh wait, their senior year contained more loses than their freshman year. Those who think the talent coming in next season will turn this team from last to first are delusional. Next year should be better with Jones, but it almost certainly will be another losing season. No high school development - bunch of transfers everywhere.

  15. Still chuckling over blaming jones for a player dribbling into a double team while possession arrow belonging to other team.

They were coming out of a timeout before that possession. Maybe there should be more planned than just getting across half court and then dribbling into the corner?

  16. Highly unlikely a high major team comes here unless its a special connection like Boschee for Kansas and multiple staff connections like Brew and previous Gophers staff had. Teague was on radio shortly after that game saying that trip won't happen again. Only reason UND gets UNI is Jake and the next best chance might be Hannah Stewart and Iowa the next few years.

Unless its situations like that I wouldn't bank on those teams coming. Women's would have a better chance than men's at this happening, but still maybe once every 5-6 years.

I think it's worth it to press all available connections for scheduling. You just never know what might develop or be open. Crazier things have happened, so no use to absolutely discount a Big Ten MBB game from ever happening in Grand Forks.

  17. True...I think it's a pretty big deal when UNI comes to town. They were ranked #10 in the country and played on CBS last weekend. They ended up losing to Wichita State, but they have a great team. Looking forward to seeing them if they do come next year.

Again, what's wrong with possibly hosting NDSU, SDSU, and UNI in the REA during 2015-2016 season? Would be a great set-up and gesture towards UND MBB.

  18. i will be elected President of the United States of America before Minnesota comes to the GF to play in mbb.

Minnesota's AD Norwood Teague signed off on the WBB team traveling to Grand Forks, and UND played a MBB game in Minneapolis in Dec. 2014, so perhaps worth a try getting a game in the REA. Would be a big crowd, especially if UND MBB can get their sh*t together.

How about Nebraska and Tim Miles vs. UND in the REA?

  19. Needing more than 3,300 seats available for a basketball game would be a good problem to have. Until then, let's keep it intimate at the Betty.

    http://www.undsports.com//fls/13500/stats/mbasketball/2011-12/und17.htm

The January 2012 NDSU vs. UND game in the Ralph Engelstad Arena drew over 7,000 people. Certain games (NDSU, Montana, maybe even Minnesota) will draw large crowds, particularly in the REA. The REA is a great venue to watch any game --hockey or basketball-- and the Betty needs improvements and upgrades, desperately. Not having any video boards in the Betty is horrible and embarrassing; most colleges and even some high schools have them!

  20. I get it but I personally thought the atmosphere was much better in the Betty last year vs. the REA three years ago. Would rather have a full and loud Betty than a half full REA.

You know, this is tough for me. I know Brian Jones agrees with you, so I'm sure the 2015-2016 NDSU game will be in the Betty, but I just think the Ralph should be used to host some MBB games for recruiting purposes and the awe factor. It would give the players a glimpse of what it would be like to play for a Big Ten school and be valued by playing in large venues. The one thing MBB players I've spoke to don't care much about is the obvious discrepancy between the UND's MBB program and UND's hockey program. The basketball-hosting Betty sits adjacent to a building much larger which hosts hockey. It let's everyone know, regardless of familiarity, that UND MBB is an afterthought at UND relative to hockey. I think the MBB players and even fans would appreciate it more if the athletic department would work out one -maybe two or three - games per season in the REA just for the awe factor.

  21. http://mweb.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/21792005/college-hockey-players-increasing-in-number-importance-in-nhl%3Cspan%20class

Though the Canadian Hockey League is still the biggest source of the NHL’s talent, the gap is narrowing for college hockey.

Canadian Hockey League out-produces NCAA hockey; therefore, NCAA hockey is quite similar to FCS football in being second fiddle in terms of professional sourcing.

UND fans need to understand that an FCS football national championship would bring just as much publicity to Grand Forks/North Dakota/UND as any college hockey national title would bring.

  22. In the mind of President Kelley, the nickname issue is/was nothing more than a nuisance. Kelley does not want to be preoccupied with university athletic issues; he has very little interest in university athletics and his mindset has impeded the potential progress of UND athletics.

  23. It doesn't matter if you have posted 12 times or 10,000 times. You or I, for that matter, could be sitting in a padded cell in the state hospital (with Internet privledges I guess). This and this alone is why I don't care what your other posts say nor should you care about mine. Your bias is whack the coach. My bias is keep the coach. The difference is you call him a prick and an idiot. That I care about. Can't defend it with anything really. End of story. Move on to autographed jones posters, mrs jones stuff or bullcit.

I could care less how many times you - or anyone else - have purely posted, but you have posted several times today regarding nothing more than anonymous posting and subjective descriptions, and that content I do think is telling. Quality over quantity.
