Summer attendance is all but mandatory, even for the incoming freshmen.  The days of voluntary summer workouts are over.

I'm worried that many people on our forum seem to be counting on Grady's return to be the immediate missing ingredient between a good and great season for UND.  It's true that Grady has many of the tools necessary to be our best offensive lineman (and a potential next level player), but I think tempering the enthusiasm a bit on his return is a smart thing to do, especially in the short term.  In many ways Elijah's debut last year was perfect timing... he began playing midseason with an experienced and talented unit around him.  This year the OL is inexperienced and will take time to gel.  For the OL working together as a unit trumps individual talent and it will take a while for this group to be hitting on all cylinders.  I expect Grady to be a great player and make a big difference, but I worry that we are setting ourselves up for a fall in the first few games if we think Grady's return is the only missing ingredient.

Although UND lost some good ones, Knauf and Rudolph are talking like some of these first-year starters have what it takes to be very good, perhaps even better than 2015's group down the road. Demon Taylor, Matt Cox, Dan Bell, and even Grant Aplin and Patric Rooney all have solid potential. Throw in returner AJ Stockwell and hopefully Elijah Grady and I think UND's offensive line has a real good chance in 2016.

    Has it?

I seem to remember around 60 guys staying back for summer workouts back in the 'olden days'. ???

That's great if numbers have surpassed that.

I was moreso referencing the difficult Mussman years that initially sparked the "low summer workout attendance" debates. Before that, from what I understand, Lennon did a tremendous job with the summer turnout.

Need to see an improvement on numbers in town during the summer.  It has to be the expectation. This is DII anymore and was really an area the past staff was below expectation.

It has improved since those days, no question.

The odds of getting a quality QB to transfer in when there is a two year starter in place is slim.  Most of those guys transfer to a place where the starting spot can be guaranteed prior to showing up.

The QB depth behind Studsrud is certainly a concern, which is why the development of Brad Heidlebaugh and the recruiting class of 2017 (Edina's Brock Boltmann is heavy favorite; http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3360892/highlights/305358386) are so very crucial to the QB position moving forward.

That is cool to see, although I am a little surprised by it though just because we don't have total name recognition in the FCS yet.  Last year we made some good strides going 7-4 and most feel we got a bum rap on the playoff selection but usually preseason polls are based a lot on name recognition and what you've done the past few years. It is nice to see that we are getting noticed though, and I guess it means we won't 'sneak' up on anybody this year.

Winning record (7-4) and a ton of returners will usually do it...

Hopefully hype leads to big Alerus Center crowds because it's certainly overdue. I suppose UND following up on the hype and just winning will be the largest factor in the attendance debate.

Go UND! Big things in 2016.

Doesn't look like he redshirted, so he could go FBS and just sit out a year.

Yes, but that also could deter him from transferring to another FBS program (desire to play immediately).

Just wondering out loud, but if it's him and he's TT's best db, I'm wondering why he'd transfer, no. 1, and no. 2, why he'd transfer to an FCS school.

There are several possibilities as to why. As for your second question, You don't have to sit for a year if it's to an FCS school (FBS to FBS transfer without waiver requires one year of ineligibility). Also, going off of Wentz being the No. 2 pick this season in the NFL draft, FCS or FBS doesn't matter if you can play.

    Certainly hope this works out.

  8. Per SFI (http://siouxfb.areavoices.com/2016/05/24/roster-recruiting-updates/), UND is actively recruiting 3 positions of need for the 2016 season: corner, offensive line, and receiver. All three spots are areas of depth concern, and after last season, everyone including the staff realizes how important depth is to winning a conference championship.

JUCO WR Sergio Bailey is being recruited by UND (Missouri State and Eastern Michigan have also offered) - http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1521730/sergio-bailey-ii

Offensive lineman Michael Coe is also being recruited by UND. He is a DII graduate. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1678941/michael-coe

Also, UND appears to be actively recruiting an FBS cornerback.

If UND is fortunate enough to acquire 3 talented student-athletes at the aforementioned 3 spots, then UND will be in good shape to contend for the Big Sky Conference championship in 2016! Go UND!

SFI mentioned in the most recent post about a potential FBS transfer at cornerback. Does anyone have any ideas who this could be, or where they could be transferring from? Tillman certainly worked out well, and JIS has quite a bit of potential.

WR and OL need to be addressed as well. In all honesty, those two positions are more thin than corner.  Perfect scenario would be solid additions to all three spots:  CB, WR, OL.

Isn't their new QB a former starter for Boise State?

Montana State's projected QB for 2016 is Tyler Bruggman. I think UND can get after him pretty good and hold their offense down. I expect UND to win this game, especially if they play well to start the season on the road vs Stony Brook and Bowling Green.

Bruggman was at Washington State in 2013, Louisville in 2014, and Scottsdale Comminity College (AZ) in 2015.

I renewed my tailgating spots and about to renew my season tickets.  This team will be so much fun to watch.  September can not get here fast enough.  I have checked the MSU fan board to see how they are doing with there new coach.  Quite a few of theirs fans still don't believe UND will be a force this year.  Santiago will rip them to shreds.  Last year I believe both Santiago and Oliviera had a 100 yards rushing.  #Leavenodoubt.

UND is a top 3 favorite to win the conference this season, in my opinion. Bubba has UND football finally believing in big things at the DI level! About time!

The September game in Bozeman is the road game I am going to try get to this season. UND beat Montana State in Grand Forks last season, so now its time to complete the sweep and get the win in Bozeman. UND should be able to still run on them pretty good, and with a new QB for Montana State, hopefully the bubba blitz gets after their offense pretty good also.

    GO UND! LETS GO HAWKS!

37" would put him in 4th at this years combine (for linebackers) per NFL.com.

Anyway, there are certainly some athletes on the UND squad.  Get some football knowledge in them and the future will look pretty bright.

Numbers at the combine can help someone who's been overlooked a bit (any UND linebackers come to mind?), but the real numbers

are in the season's stats , in my opinion.

Numbers and measurables are great, but what Bubba and the current coaches are now doing with summer camps as combines/recruiting tools is spectacular. By getting the kids on campus, that allows the staff to evaluate the recruits in-person before offering. All in all, I'd say it has allowed for some pretty good classes thus far. The classes of 2014 and 2015 have been real productive. Of course, the teaching and development this staff does is quite good too.

Keep up that work and UND football will have both very good talent and very good depth in a year or two. Right now, this team has good talent but minimal depth.

Disterhaupt also top 3 verticle and top 5 Pro test, impressive!!

Neither Clive nor Reed ran a 40.  Clive would be top 3, and possibly 1st but his start isn't great.  But running a post or crossing route doesn't really require a top start.  I am guessing Clive would have the fastest 60 yard.  Reed is likely top 10 40.  Clive and Reed would knock 2 LBs out of top 10, seems to make sense.

Georges, Reed, and Stanley provide more than capable ability at the receiver position; however, after them, it gets scary thin.

Hopefully the young players and incoming freshmen surprise this year at WR and provide quality depth. Incoming JUCO player hopefully helps as well.

Need receivers to keep defense honest with UND's running game. I feel really good about Keaton having a big season; that is, if he plays the whole season...

Backup QB situation is also scary. Depth improving but not yet where it needs to be at all positions

They are more in a list format on his tweet, so I'm assuming they are in order of fastest first?  No WR's in the top 10....no wonder why we say we need to improve in that area.  Although I would think Clive would be on there, but maybe he didn't run or something for some reason?  Surprised that Reyes is number 3.

Reyes has always been one of the fastest players on the team. He's also one of the most talented players on the roster, in my opinion. True All-American type of ability for 2016.

    Folks....

In related news, womens hockey will not be ticketed next year.

Don't do that - that could hurt the feelings of those with a misshaped sense of reality.

Oh, and I hear there are a few of those within the athletic department...

They produce one every Tuesday during season, don't they?  UND Sports Extra.

Is that what you are talking about...or just a football show?

UND Sports Extra "lumps" all non-hockey sports into a single half-hour slot with little time for Bubba to go through highlights and preview the next game. Not to mention, player/coach spotlight stories are not done every week; however, if done every week they would certainly help UND football with program exposure.

See NDSU football program on NBC and UND hockey with Brad Berry on Midcontinent. Simple and effective.

I almost started a separate thread on having a Sioux football show a couple of weeks ago, asking why we no longer have one.  In the 90's there was 30 minute Sioux football show every week during the season that would go through the highlights and then they'd bring a couple of players on as well.   I didn't like it when the football coverage just got jammed into a part of the UND Extra thing since it was covering all sports and couldn't get as many highlights nor have players come on.  I'm sure the players felt it was a nice privilege to be able to come on the show in recognition for having a nice game.

I remember watching that show.  If I remember they would go over the game with some film and have an offensive, defensive and special teams player.  Then go over the next opponent and league standing.  They also had a scout team player of the week.  It was on Sunday nights.  I always watched that.

They could call it The Bubba Show.

Absolutely, Midcontinent needs to seriously consider producing a half-hour football program during the football season. The format would be simple (previous game highlights w/ Bubba, next game preview, conference standings, and interviews/spotlight on player and/or coach) and effective in increasing the following of UND football.

Wouldn't the locals be the source of the hype rather than being informed of said hype?

Additional outlets allow for excitement to spread at a faster rate. Are you actually questioning media exposure?

Very nice piece. It's interesting and exciting in terms of next season's possibilities.

If resources permit, I thinks Midcontinent should produce a weekly 1/2 hour football program with Bubba during the football season, similar to hockey with Brad Berry. There would be an audience for it if it was done as NDSU does their football show on NBC; go through latest game highlights, preview future game, and add in a weekly spotlight on a player, coach, alumnus, or position group. It would only help increase the local following of UND football and help locals realize there is growing hype for the program.
