That idea's all wet. But at least it's a decent idea.

Who did the NFL use to this extent? It seems to me that the extent of which these stars are used is directly related to the condition of the league. The more desperate they are, the harder they push the stars. LeBron James and Kobe were two that were pushed by the NBA as of late to try to build interest in a pro sport that was fading almost as much as the NHL (though it never can thanks to ESPN's undying loyalty. I maintain that the world can turn to hate the NBA but ESPN would still show it primetime on one of their channels at least). Baseball used to steroid users to try to save baseball (Sosa and McGwire). But what of the NFL? TO? No. I can't remember a single player that had as much PR push behind him than LeBron or Sidney. Why? Because they don't need it. They already got a very popular sport that is engaging and entertaining. The NHL is FINALLY building entertaining games. They need to start promoting the sport itself and the organizations that make the case for the NHL. I'm not saying cut Crosby out of the picture. I'm saying it's time to start promoting the sport itself rather than one good player. And Goon is right, 82, they do a great job of giving the impression that, without Sidney, the NHL would fold.

I think the main crux of this issue is the double standard. UND fans are pointing, laughing, and pontificating on the downfall of the reputation of the Bison athletic teams and their head coaches due to some bad apples (as MplsBison calls them). UND fans look bad for it, right? Or do they? Let's transpose a bit. Say these athletes that stole this stuff, got caught with stuff, etc. were on UND's football team. UND's football team took the same actions NDSU's did in dismissing the athletes from the team. NDSU fans wouldn't crow would they? Naww, of course not! Oh wait. Defense rests. The point is: Whether it is us or them, no one is taking the high road yet both sides claim to regularly. So, to put it in a 6th grade context: UND fans may not be any better than NDSU fans, but at least NDSU fans aren't better than UND fans! Take it for what you will.

I thought the bylaws and or constitution of the NCAA stated that they couldn't choose the nickname of member schools?
-
I got my history mixed up. I thought Ward and the Hurricanes made it to the Finals but didn't win it all.

If the Red Wings win, is it an upset? If they lose, is it a disappointment? The Red Wings enter play choosing the last month of the season to start playing like a playoff team, despite being healthy again for a little while longer than that. They have a rookie goaltender. A good one, but a rookie nonetheless. The Coyotes are the higher ranked, have been better over more of the season. It's scoreless after 1 and I'm on the edge of my seat.

Ummm You're assuming that the term "Jew" is derogatory. In truth, it depends upon how you use the term. If you say the term "Jew" with reference to this basketball team, it's hilarious and not at all derogatory. If you say the term in a manner such as this: "Don't Jew me like that." Ok, THAT is derogatory. I'm a Jew. I don't see that being derogatory at all. And as for the "Jumping Jews" I want a Tshirt!

When he's not diving. Then he's agitating the fans of the game because the officials can't see it for what it is worth. It's going to be interesting. Who is going to get the 2nd Annual Robbie Earl Memorial Award for Frozen Water Diving? Will it be Cepis, who was hurt in this contest by only having half a season under his belt in the WCHA or will it be returning champion Garrett Roe?

Keggy the Keg? Seriously? Please tell me that was some sort of openly rebellious act by the Student Senate against the Dartmouth Administration and not serious! If it was serious, well, there ya go folks.
-
In order to be considered a stalker here you'd have to be following around a player most posters like. I'm not so sure Finley fit that specification. Glad to hear he's doing well.
-
I based it off assumption. I don't know where he'd end up. He said he wants to stay in the WCHA and mentioned UND and UMD. I personally believe (to no fault of his) that, of the two schools he mentioned, UMD is the better chance. I am not saying UMD will want him. I don't know where he'd end up. He could end up at Quinnipiac since they have taken players that haven't had much luck at other schools (like Siembida). I'd like all the Midwest and Western talent to end up in the WCHA. Heck, I'd like all of the talent to play in the WCHA, as unrealistic as that is. I'd also like Walters to play where he'd like to play, so I used UMD. I mentioned UNO, BSU, and MSUM because of the fact that they are WCHA members and I want them to be competitive. MSUM just lost Pitlick and Walters could be a substitute for him (even though he may not be quite the talent Pitlick was). Whatever. It was just my 2 cents anyhow.

I thought the Canadiens were embarrassed last night. Oh well. They had their hurrah. Caps in 5
-
I was thinking they were the ones who installed the Ford Field ice? Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised.
-
Low. He'd be a nice guy to have but we have no room. If UMD and UND were his two choices, I'd guess he'd end up at UMD. IMO, though, I think he should try for a team like UNO or Bemidji. I hear MSUM has an opening...

That makes sense to me. I just read (or watched) the media change the wording to what I said. It seemed to me Wirtz wanted to make money first... and that mean putting butts in the seats. You don't make money in the long term when you supply your product to the masses for an upfront fee payed by the network (if that's how it works... I doubt TV deals are free to the networks or costly to the team owners). It's much better now. The Hawks are now relevant. They still have flaws but they're much better now... assuming Bowman doesn't mess it all up.

JT's moves on the ice last night was just plain sick. Rinne made incredible saves on him, one short handed even. In fact, I think everyone except Rinne thought that was going to be a goal, even the commentators almost yelled "SCORES" before realizing Rinne made a great save and yelled "RINNE" instead. I'm REALLY impressed with Rinne. If he continues to play like he did last night (which he will have to in order to have any chance at winning) the Preds could go deep. I'll say it again: WOW I'm impressed with him. On a seperate note: I have a conspiracy theory as to why the Hawks were so dominant but failed to win despite Rinne's brilliance: The Chicago Cubs came to watch the game. Yup. When you have that kind of mediocrity in the building it kindof sucks the success out of the building. Luckily, none of the Cubs bullpen members were mentioned otherwise, Huet would have made an appearance and the Preds would have won 7-1...NO empty netters.

Crosby was good. The "goal" he saved was pretty easy though. If you watch the replay you'll notice that the puck was just about at a dead stop. Unless a Sen was miraculously able to beat Crosby or Fleury back to the puck (which I argue they could not) there was no way that puck was going to cross the line. Nevertheless, the set up on the game winner was a thing of beauty and his goal was just being in the right place at the right time for the rebound put in (like Kane's goal in the Hawks Preds game). Doesn't diminish Crosby's game in the slightest. He was far and away the best player on the ice. However, Fleury looked very shakey (very Team Canada vs Team USA Luongo esque). I think the Sens COULD beat out the Pens if Elliott continues to play solidly, the Sens D holds out, and they put a ton of pucks on Fleury with someone in front for the rebound. What was better was the commentating on the series of plays. They were good and NOT over the top. There was no stupid laurels like the Olympics where they said "The Legend of Sid the Kid grows bigger!" Vomit me a river. Anyways... I have faith in the Wings. I just don't see a rookie goaltender being able to withstand the playoffs. It's no fault of Howard's. Not many can. Ed Belfour's rookie year saw him lead the Hawks to the best record in the West (maybe in hockey) and lose in the first round to Minnesota 4 games to 2. Doesn't diminish Belfour in the slightest. Of course, the following season he led the Hawks to the SC Finals (lost to Pittsburgh I believe). If the Kings and Canucks was fun to watch, the Hawks and Preds were too. Good grief, in the second period, the camera could barely keep up! And Pekka Rinne is simply fantastic even if the Hawks helped him out a few times.

Toews played great last night. Unfortunately, most of Chicago's shots made Rinne look like a superstar. It was a fun game to watch though.

I think the biggest disappointment for Caps fans is the fact that Gainey was fired as GM of the Canadiens. Why? Because, if Gainey remained, Carey Price would have started this game and the Caps would have won 5-3. As for Detroit's game... This series could go either way. Bryzgalov gave up the weakest goal of the playoffs thus far (Holmstrom's goal) but then was pretty solid the rest of the game all things considered. I love Howard, but he's a rookie. Not sure if rookies can hold up. The last rookie goaltender to lead his team to a Cup Finals victory was Patrick Roy in the mid 80s. It may have even been the last time the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. Not sure. Brodeur didn't make it to the SC Finals his rookie year! So, my expectations aren't too high for this team.

Not that I have anything on Howard, but... How awesome would it be to see Vokoun in Red Wing red? (Don't answer that. I'm sure you're not a Wings fan ) As to what you said, Vokoun would DEFINITELY be a welcome addition to Chicago. That being said, I'd be STUNNED if Vokoun didn't end up a Flyer or Maple Leaf. As for Turco, I think he's done as a starting goaltender. He's another Osgood in a way. Had his heyday. I think Turco can market himself as a decent platoon goaltender or top notch backup. Osgood, however, should gracefully retire. That guy is a disaster right now.
-
I don't find it altogether impossible to see Huet make 43 saves. He'll probably do it on 50 or 53 shots though. And, unless Fleury is equally sieve-esque, that would mean Pittsburgh wins it.

Defensive breakdown? Pheasant D Flew the Coop Offense problems? Pheasant Offense Lays an Egg Officials hose us? Hakstol, Pheasants Cry FOWL! Last minute heroics? A Pheasant SURPRISE! GO FIGHTING CAVALRY! The possibilities are ENDLESS with this! Be sure to have NO semblence of Native American imagery or ANYTHING. No feathers, no NA symbols at all. Just straight Fighting Cavalry. I say we tear down the statue in front of the Ralph, the "Sioux" signs, and as much Sioux statues as we can get removed easily off the campus, drive them down to the SR Rez, and dump them in the middle of the reservation. It's theirs. Then take all of the unsold Fighting Sioux merchandise, destroy them or make them in some way unrepairable (without burning them or marring the word "Sioux") and dump them in the SR reservation too. Then just leave. Move on. The silver lining is that UND and UND students no longer have to hear about how we should treat NA people any better than they treat each other. They no longer have special status. And all the outreach is no longer a necessity. I'm not sponsoring cutting NA programming, but now that the nickname is on the way out, the NA students don't have to be treated any better than the African American, Asian American, Hispanic-American, or any other ethnic American race. If I led any of the other ethnic American student organizations or outreach programs, I'd petition and start activism on campus stating that, now that the nickname is gone, NA students are being treated more preferrentially than African American, etc. ethnicities. Then dillute the funding and reduce the NA student organizations and programs to "just another ethnic program." As for the cheers, meh. Most of the cheers we did in the old arena don't involve the nickname anyways. And most of them are forgotten or not allowed anyways even with the nickname. That chapter is gone. I just hope that the Administration doesn't pull an SCSU and paint over the Sioux logo on the pictures in the concourse.

No they won't. Gone will be the visage of the respect garnered in that paragraph read before sporting events. "One proud warriors...etc." Now they'll just be impoverished, poor, still have truancy and high school graduation problems, and still blaming the white man for it. However, Erich Longie (who's probably dancing in the street) will have no one else to blame. HEH! He can't even blame the white man government. A black man is in charge! ROFL

PHEW! I say that puts some money back in my pockets. Good luck with the new nickname. I'll still support whatever hockey. the SBoHE is a joke and they proved it today. Oh well. Now we sit back and watch Kelley lose a MAJORITY of alumni support. My guess is that he doesn't last 2 years. No, the nickname is permanently gone. We all knew that a long time ago. But now, the new set of challenges is right. Dr. Kelley has to try to find a way to rebuild UND alumni support when he was the spearhead (or attributed as such as it may) to destroying it. Impossible feat. I wonder who the new Dean will be.
