  1. I thought the nickname of "Gold" was one of the dumbest I've ever hear. Apparently, I wasn't the only one with how soon the school dumped it. My question is didn't the Athletic Department do some research into the name change? It sure doesn't look like they did. Otherwise, they might have done the following in the first place.
  2. Edina came in at #8 in SI's list of top 25 high school's in the country.
  3. I didn't see this posted yet 2005-06 Fighting Sioux Men
  4. They are $1500 per seat ($330 is a donation to the Fighting Sioux Club) Here is what that gets you: - Tickets to all events in the Ralph except NCAA tournament events - Tickets to all UND basketball games in the Betty - Complimentary alcoholic beverages prior to each event in the Ralph - Complimentary soda and snacks during events - Ability to purchase 1 club lounge SRO ticket at general admission prices - Membership to FSC - Parking pass for the Ralph - Lifetime, fully transferable ownership rights
  5. The national champion was voted on when those bowl games were played. Because of that, the NCAA does not recognize any national champions prior to the tournament format starting in 1973. That is why NDSU claims 8 DII titles but the NCAA only recognizes 5. This also means that there has never been a DI-A football champion at least according to the NCAA. DII championships by school DI championships by school
  6. There was a letter with the renewal info about 30 season tickets being open in the club lounges. I don't think they are that bad of a deal being that you get tickets for all non-NCAA events in the Ralph, basketball tickets in the Betty, and a parking pass. I would consider getting one of those if I lived in GF.
  7. I realize that the administration has changed since the last DI hockey push. I just don't see how NDSU could have made the move to DI for the rest of their sports if hockey had been added. It's probably a good thing for Taylor/Chapman that the hockey drive failed since they don't have to worry about paying for a men's and (likely) women's hockey teams which you would think would give the maximum number of scholarships allowed. I do sometimes wonder about the timing of the DI move they made. NDSU seemed so anxious to move to DI that they did so with a barely adequate DII basketball facility which there seems to be no real plan on replacing.
  8. More info on Zach's missed penalty shot: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=2056461
  9. I could see how someone would think that. What I wonder is if NDSU had been successful in getting a hockey team about five years ago, would they have moved the other teams up to DI? I'd have to say no. They might have considered it, but I don't think they would have made the move. I don't think the hockey team would be making much money considering they'd likely be in the CHA, and I don't see fans flocking to see the likes of AL-Huntsville. They'd also have to add a womens team (likely hockey as well) for Title IX reasons, and that team is sure to be a money drain.
  10. The only time I thought it made sense for UND to play in the Ralph was the Kansas and NDSU games. Unless they get someone with that kind of drawing power coming in (and I don't see that happening anytime soon), there is no reason to play in the Ralph. Somehow, I don't think the hockey program is crying over all the bball games being in the Betty.
  11. As Mike McFeely's column states, the arena measures chance to pass is greater with a low voter turnout. The Ice Sharks biggest problem (other than playing in a dump) was that they didn't win, and Fargo doesn't seem too willing to turnout for losers. NDSU women's basketball teams have had higher average than the men in the past largely because they men weren't that good. The Redhawks have consistently drawn fans, but they've also never had a bad year and don't have to compete with any other teams. The competition for fans is what I think will kill any hockey team in town especially since NDSU's move to D-I and the amount of marketing they will likely do anytime they bring an opponent in with any kind of name recognition. UND and the Grand Forks area have built a hockey following over 50+ years. These arena proposals that keep coming up in Fargo seem to forget this by wanting to put a team in a building that the community hasn't shown it can support either financially or capacity wise. I see this building as something that will be a drain on the taxpaper and will also take the Fargodome into the red due to the increased competition for acts/events.

    Smaby

You're not alone. I create the Sioux every year in EA's NCAA Football. You can get pretty close to the real thing. You could get the exact uniform if they'd ever let you pick the actual logo Notre Dame has on their helmet instead of the leprachaun. Then you play your games in the U of Idaho's stadium which looks similar to the Alerus if you ignore the indoor track. You can pick the right fight song thanks to UND sharing it with Ohio University.
  13. Maybe that's a good thing for him because if he was Redickesque that would instantly make him the most hated player in the NCC and subject him to endless taunting. Plus, as a Carolina fan, I'd rather have a McCants-type. Then again, that might not be such a good idea.

    HD TV

I've been waiting a long time to see a hockey game in high-def so I think it's ironic the first one I'll see will have UND playing in it. I went and upgraded my receiver today to the HD DVR model so, if the Sioux win, I'll have a high-def copy to replay over and over. I was somewhat surprised that both the semifinals and finals are being broadcast in HD given that ESPN didn't televise higher rated events (like this year's UNC-Duke game) in HD.
  15. I think it's interesting that only 4 times in the 25 year history of the award has the Hobey Baker winner been on the national champions in the same year.

    Roger Maris

Rick Reilly has an interesting article in the current SI about Roger Maris and how he didn't take any performance enhancing drugs to hit 61 homers. There are quite a few quotes from Roger Maris, Jr. Including this one: Reilly finished the article by saying For those that are SI subscribers, you can access it online: http://premium.si.cnn.com/pr/subs/siexclus...0411/index.html
  17. It'll be interesting to see who gets the job. Assuming he applies, the husband of Shantel Rivard, Peter, is the head men's and women's soccer coach at Mayville State. If he got the position and does a good job, you'd assume he'd stick around as long as his wife is the hockey coach. Taken from Shantel Rivard's coaches bio on the FightingSioux.com.
  18. USCHO also has UND/MN as the late game. http://www.uscho.com/schedules/index.php?date=20050407
  19. If the current Sioux logo was used for TV broadcasts, it couldn't be any harder to make out than Denver's logo which some people can't seem to figure out no matter how big it's shown.
  20. I figured bandwidth restrictions would be a problem with hosting it there, but I didn't know where else to put it.
  21. I've posted the goal online. I had to zip it as Yahoo doesn't like the .wmv file format. http://www.geocities.com/grovers50/spirko.zip
  22. I see that all of the ESPN experts picked BC to lose in the title game.
  23. I don't see it happening, but two Boston firms have offered over $3 billion to buy the entire NHL. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2003701&num=0
  24. Moorhead State #2? I doubt they'd finish higher than 4th if they were in the NCC. If the Sioux lose and Moorhead somehow ends up hosting the regional, it would almost be like home games for the Sioux based on the past turnout for UND games there in the past.
  25. Whoa, hold on there. I don't believe for a second that a Badger player would ever throw a water bottle at Sioux player/fan.
