  1. The Forum today had an article about the Spuds hockey program. It mentioned that Scheels is already displaying Moorhead state champion merchandise (which they won't sell unless the Spuds win it). I know its common for merchandise to be made beforehand, but I couldn't believe that Scheels was displaying it before the tournament has even started.
  2. Marto was named Mr. Hockey.
  3. It looks like UND should be #1 in the next regional rankings with UND sweeping and Regis losing to CO School of Mines today.
  4. I remember reading that when the Alerus and REA opened up they weren't going to show close calls on the replay boards. I don't remember any rule saying why they wouldn't show them. It does seem that the Alerus has gone from showing no questionable calls when it opened to last year showing replays of everything.
  5. Don't forget them trying to prounce Perkerewicz and Schleusner. My favorite though was when Schleusner dropped a first down with just over a minute left and Todd Christiansen says how that was a blessing because they'd bleed another 15 seconds off the clock. When he said that, I just wished I could have been sitting next to him and said, "Hey Todd, it's college they stop the clock on first downs."
  6. I'm aware of the history of the Sioux people and the message played at the start of home games as I've had hockey and football tickets for four years now. What I was saying that I don't think the school would ever go for the tomahawk logo again because they'd see it as not being PC.
  7. While it sucks to see the season cancelled, the NHL owners and players have had this notion for too long that they are still a major sport when the facts didn't back it up. I know people who'd like ESPN to show more NHL games, but why should they? Basically, anything (like bowling for example) got better ratings and likely cost the network far less for the broadcast rights. If there is a positive in this for me, it'll be that the owners and players almost surely will have to accept the fact that their status has severly dropped because of the total lack of a public outcry over the cancellation. What do you think would happen if the NFL, NBA or baseball ever did the same?
  8. While I like the old Sioux/Blackhawk jersey, I wouldn't want to go back to that because I always saw it as a copy of the Chicago uniform. For those that want to see the tomahawk shoulder logo come back, do you think that would really help UND regarding the amount of flack it already takes for having a Native American nickname? I don't think the tomahawk promotes the kind of image that UND wants associated with the use of the Sioux name.
  9. Scholarships are on a year-to-year basis so the coach could decide to increase, decrease, or revoke it. I doubt players get their scholarships revoked too often as it doesn't look good for the school and could be a negative for future recruiting.

    NCC expansion

From what I've read, it seems like Mary is more interested in the NSIC than the NCC. I would think the NCC would be your goal since it's a higher regarded conference, and they'd have an in-state rival in UND. It's also not like the location of the NSIC schools is any more favorable than the NCC. Maybe, they think they'll have an easier time getting in the playoffs by winning the NSIC.
  11. I know there are "Bison fans" (and probably quite a few of them) out there who follow the Sioux hockey team. Personally, I don't get how someone who says they are a Bison football fan can root for the Sioux hockey team. This makes determining which team has a bigger following more difficult. Plus, you can throw in the fact that UND games are televised statewide which can only increase the fan base.
  12. Well, you got you wish with Harvard losing to NE in 2OT.
  13. If I worked for Quality Auto Body, I'd be asking why my company wasted its money to sponsor the "collision of the game". Last night's was probably the lamest to date. I saw the "hit" when it happened and thought to myself that Massen must not like to check because I thought he could have nailed the guy. Instead, it looked like he pulled up or slowed down at the last minute. I wasn't surprised that they picked that play, though, since I think I've only agreed with their pick two or three times. At least, they didn't play it so slow that it took 20 seconds to show. Since I'm on a replay rant, why does the production crew at the Ralph have such a problem showing replays. How hard is to show a replay of a goal and actually get to see the part of the play before the puck goes in the net?
  14. I can't believe I missed the best comment the first time around.
  15. This week's SI has an article on the top 25 sports bars in the country. Playmakers in Fargo is # 23. Other bars that made the list: Joe Senser's at # 15 and State Street Brats (Madison) at # 13.
  16. Maybe that isn't so bad. How many times this year have the Sioux wasted an odd-man scoring opportunity because someone tries a near impossible pass rather than just shooting the puck?
  17. Fargo being close to GF helps UND which in turn helps GF. I believe that over 50% of hockey ticket holders live outside of GF. You'd have to think a big portion of that is from Fargo. I know there sure seem to be a lot of cars when I'm driving up from Fargo for games. UND seems to be spending a lot more money in the Fargo area promoting sports than I can ever remember. I've lived in Fargo my whole life, and I've never looked at GF as a rival once you throw out anything to do with UND and NDSU. Growing up, Bison fans would rip GF when they'd hear I'm a Sioux fan. My response was always along the lines of what does Fargo being better than GF, in your mind, have anything to do with the performance of the athletic teams from UND and NDSU. Now, I did get sick of hearing how MN is better than ND growing up. So, Moorhead is at the bottom of my list of favorite cities. My favorite Forum picture is of former Moorhead Mayor Lanning looking all pissed off when the last census results showed that Moorhead shrunk in the 90's compared to Fargo & West Fargo's 20% growth rate. I think Dillworth even gained a 1000 people which is a high percentage for them.
  18. There is a story about Grant Gunhus listing UND as one of his two college choices in the Forum today.
  19. In the ECAC's defense, they did pull off a couple big wins by beating Maine, UNH, and Duluth in order to win the Cup.
  20. No defensive only player has won the Heisman trophy. I don't believe Charles Woodson would have won it without his play at WR and as a return man. A big problem I think Digger would have with getting Harlon Hill consideration is that I think the Sioux defense will have too many playmakers. I think his chances would be helped if the other LB's weren't so good resulting in Digger having to make more plays.
  21. There is a poll on the Herald online about where UND should play their basketball games. With over 100 votes, 85% (one of them mine) think they should all be in the Betty. Should UND's basketball teams play all of their games in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center or in the Ralph Engelstad Arena?
  22. Just think if Zach had taken those scouts' advice and not gone to UND, he would probably have been the #1 pick.
  23. But at least those two are good teams. Nobody is going to be comparing Shanley with Moorhead anytime soon.
  24. The following quote is regarding Title IX. Maybe we should try and get the Title IX activists on board by making them see how this would likely lead to scholarships being taken away from women. If that did happen, that would be the first time I'd ever seen a positive with Title IX in regards to football.
  25. I didn't see the Kessel vs. Crosby thread and posted the comment in another thread before moving it here. I guess I'm not alone since I see others commenting on how his moves didn't work against Russia. You can say Crosby's goals are partly the result of his linemates, but I don't think it's a coincidence that he always seems to be in the right place at the right time.
