1. Haha, sounds like "I never knowingly took performance-inhancing drugs."
2. Also helps that Eastern Washington won it all this year. Big Sky is looking a lot better to people. Tate Forcier, a Michigan transfer that has offers from Miami and San Diego, is also looking at Montana. Tate is a baby, nevertheless, its good for the conference to have top competition looking at the schools.
3. I never once said Hak is THE reason the program is where its at. Its Hak and Co doing a great job with what we have and improving on it. I'm tired of this whole arguement and its sad that I need to defend things like this (especially this early in the season). There is still a lot of hockey to be played and the post season results are frustrating, it doesn't mean we need a change in the staff. Johnson is a great coach, I never brought it up though. Another poster said Johnson was a better successor and I disagreed. UND hockey is more than me and you, Hak and Co., and the current players. I understand that, Hak and Co sure as heck understand that, and the current players know that too. Thats why kids stick around at UND.
4. They did that with the Big Ten. They have no protected rivalries built into schedules. Even though Michigan and OSU are in different divisions they play each other each year. Completely agree though, its important to start building an annual game with BOTH MSU and Montana so that rivalry can grow. Since we can kiss goodbye an annual game with South Dakota or NDSU.
5. Its just weird timing about the Summit leader bringing this up. Trying to excuse himself for "losing" out on the Sioux joining the Summit. I am surprised by the move of us not going to the Summit. On paper it just makes sense, but I do think its cool to get a rivalry going with Montana, and I'll to see my Sioux out here in Spokane.
6. Hak and Co are doing an excellent job, please can we delete this thread. I'm embarrassed to see it when I log on.
7. Ryan never was going to play for the Sioux, he was wearing Gopher gear around Soph year. Irman would follow Ryan to the ends of the earth at that time. Hak IS a great recruiter, you'll sole example was Grant Potulny? Hahaha, get real. Have you ever thought that maybe Grant wanted to play for the Gophers instead of the Sioux? Kids have choices to make or maybe Dean didn't want him. One player the Sioux didn't get, but of course you forgot Toews and Parise. Actually I forget, where is Toews/Parise now days? How bout Grant? You win some, you lose some when it comes to recruiting. I would agrue that Toews has done more for recognition of our program than Grant has for Minnesota. Our program was amazing when Hak took over, its now an elite stopping point for US/Canada players to get to the NHL and play for a winning program and get a quality education. I did realize Steve was a GM and HC at Lincoln and Fargo, again, whats your point? Fargo was in 2009 so thats irrelavant to your agrument. Again, when Hak took over he had 4 yrs at UND, recruiting, teaching, and developing as a COLLEGE coach. Steve Johnson during those 4 yrs was a head coach in the USHL. By far better experience at UND then in the USHL. Just my opinion. UND associate HC > USHL GM/HC. PS. Hak was a GM/HC for 4 yrs prior to that. Again, career progression, thats what its all about.
8. Interesting points. But I have never liked Kelley, no matter who is telling the truth. I didn't feel that he stood up at the President of the Sioux for the nickname really at all.
9. Does it? Check your math again. Hak has more HC experience to date by several years. Hak started coaching in 1996, Johnson in 1995. All of Johnson experience prior to this year was in the USHL, Hak had GM/HC responsibilities in the USHL and then 4 years at UND. He had a hand in recruiting Parise, Bochenski, Greene, etc etc. I'll take Hak all day over Johnson who had no experience recruiting or HC experience at the college level. I'm sorry but 9 season in the USHL does not equal 4 seasons in the USHL and 4 seasons as an associate HC at UND. Hak had a far better resume in 2004 than Johnson.
10. Yeah, I know. Whats your point? I was talking about when the coaches took over the programs. Not going through every season they've ever coached.
11. Welcome to UND
12. My whole point to that was some of the winning est coaches of all time in college hockey took several years to win at their respective schools. Of course I didn't use EVERY example of each coach. The point was to have patience with Hak and Co. thats it. No need to nit pick the numbers. I'm well aware that York has won at Bowling Green as well as 3 in BC. I also didn't mention Lucia, who won it in his 3rd year if I'm not mistaken. Surprised no one used that example.
13. Jerry York - 7 years at BC for his 1st title. 7 years later for his 2nd. Another 14 yrs for his 3rd Playing career: Boston College Jack Parker - 6 years at BU for his 1st title. 17 years later for his 2nd. Playing career: Boston U Red Berenson - 12 years at UM for his 1st title. 2 years later for his 2nd. Title-less for 12 years. Playing career: Michigan George Gwozdecky - 10 years at DU for his 1st title. 1 year later for his 2nd. Playing career: Wisconsin Ron Mason - 6 years at MSU for his 1st title(1986). Titleless until the end of his coaching career 2001. Playing career: St Lawerence Dave Hakstol - 6 years and counting. Playing career: North Dakota Ron Mason is the winning coach in college hockey history and he went 15 years without a title and still kept his job. Talk about showing respect for a coach. Those are some great coaches listed right there. Some of the best and it took a while for each to get a title. Hak and Co are doing a great job and we have some of the best recruits coming as well in the near future. Its nice to have a coach that understands our tradition and what the expectations.
14. Wow, so you're telling me there's a chance?! Feeling pretty good after Sunday I see? Thats a whole nother thread. Lets go Steelers.
15. Dave Hakstol's resume: 1989-92 University of North Dakota player 1992-94 Indianapolis Ice (IHL) player 1994-96 Manitoba Moose (IHL) player 1996 Manitoba Moose (IHL) - assistant coach 1998 Central District Team (USA) National Select 16 Festival - head coach 1998 USA/USHL Team IIHF Four Nations Cup - head coach 1996-2000 Sioux City (USHL) - general manager and head coach 2000-2004 University of North Dakota - associate head coach 2004-present University of North Dakota - head coach
16. A lot more experience than Steve Johnson has. Steve Johnson has really no recruiting experience. Hakstol had 4 years of recruiting experience at UND, before he took over as head coach. That's why the program hasn't been hurt AT ALL since Blais left. The program continues to strive for excellence year after year. Dave Hakstol's resume: 1989-92 University of North Dakota player
1992-94 Indianapolis Ice (IHL) player
1994-96 Manitoba Moose (IHL) player
1996 Manitoba Moose (IHL) - assistant coach
1998 Central District Team (USA) National Select 16 Festival - head coach
1998 USA/USHL Team IIHF Four Nations Cup - head coach
1996-2000 Sioux City (USHL) - general manager and head coach
2000-2004 University of North Dakota - associate head coach
2004-present University of North Dakota - head coach
17. I just read a article earlier in the day saying that Schwartz is hopefully going be back by the DU series, thats good news for us, not so much for CC fans. I agree with having Davidson in the lineup. I'll take a tough, seasoned, senior any day over a decent freshman/soph. I really like Rodwell's speed, just on that he creates chances for his line and his not afraid to throw his body around. Question remains for me, do we see Eids back this weekend? If we lose Friday, look to see Eids on Saturday for sure.
18. I don't think he needs much "pressure to perform." A coach feels that pressure when he knows what the expectations are every year at a program like UND. Hak knows the expectations and the tradition.
19. It was certainly weird seeing a fight this weekend, as I was at a WHL game. I also love the name PANZARella, sounds extremely familiar....!
20. How much head coaching experience in college hockey does he have? What a joke to think that Steve Johnson is magically going to win a NCAA title if he came to UND. Hak and Co. are recruiting the best and building the best team to win, its not that easy to coast to the championship anymore. Any team can win it on a yearly basis. Just need to get hot at the right time.
21. Goon, you really opened up a can, far too early in the season! This whole thread is just ridiculous. We're in 2nd place in the WCHA and people are ripping on Hak in his 7th year. The example of Jerry York, Red Berenson, years between championships is perfect. Took Gwoz 10 yrs till his 1st of 2.
22. Not a bad idea, a player needs game time to really improve. On the flip side players do grow and develop even if they have limited ice time there first two years in school. That may hurt DU down the road as the season grinds on.
23. If anyone is looking for a mutual fund that follows the Williston Basin check out ICPAX.
24. You'd think. What a great opportunity for an unofficial visit for not only the Shattuck teams, but for every elite team in GF this weekend. I noticed Shattuck plays at the main Ralph rink 2 games. Interesting put there. Get them used to playing in the best hockey arena in the world...
25. I teared up on this. Jeez, such a class act. We'll worth the watch. 98% of people who break what he broke, die instantly! Incredible he's still alive.
