I haven't heard what Bernardino's reasoning was fit asking it at that point in time but I'd assume part of that inflated salary is to be a clubhouse leader. Those things are relevant to that. Hunter has pretty much gotten a free pass from the local media in the past for those and other clubhouse issues (fights, airing teammates dirty laundry).

I'm not quite so sure that's how the ticket revenues for UND athletics is handled. UND reported over $4 million in ticket revenues for 2013. If the REA was getting that and then giving UND a cut, UND wouldn't be able to report it like that. I believe that for UND events, they contract with the REA to handle that ticket sales, season tickets, etc. The money given to UND at the end of the year are proceeds from other events and concessions that the REA does outside of handling UND's tickets.

You're actually incredibly close, I forgot that the Ticketmaster fees were that high and didn't take into account what the students pay. As sad as it is, I actually had a breakdown of the cost of regular season tickets. They vary depending on opponent, non-conference, Friday/Saturday, etc. Total retail cost before fees (not counting playoff series) this year would have been $845 for 22 games, averaging out to a little over $38/game.

That'd be what it is if they sold them as season tickets. If they left them as single game tickets, you can roughly double it. No clue what their plan is either way. Edit: Actually looks like there is 412 seats in Section 310 (section from the students). $165,000 at $20/game (season tickets) or around double that if sold as single game tickets.

It's going to effect athletic department budgets across the board. And it is money that has to come from somewhere. Which is why being realistic about coaches being fired and things of that nature is kind of important.

It will be voted on by the membership and be allowable by all D-1 members when it passes. Title IX implications also apply so it must be done equally on the men's and women's side.

You're playing both sides. OOC has nothing to do with making the dance (though it does have an effect on seeding if they were to make it). Yet you say its the Dance or nothing. The only way UND will ever get to the Dance is to win the Big Sky tournament.

Mid-majors rebuild, especially low mid-majors. Kansas and Duke?? Are you serious? UND's basketball budget is currently around $1 million. Kansas's is about $8.5 million. Duke's is over $14 million. But yeah, they reload so maybe we should try to do that. The difference in talent pool in the area for women's basketball and men's basketball is huge as well. Makes a big difference.

Disagree. Hunter is not an upgrade in the outfield. Moving Arcia to left doesn't help anything either, especially since Willingham only played 53 games in the outfield last year, so he's not really the one being replaced. Though Willingham has long been an issue in left field with his knees. My problem is that DH is the only spot that he might be worth a portion of what they gave him, though doubtful the Twins will admit it and pull him from the outfield. Again, I guess they are paying him so the casual fan can feel warm and fuzzy about bringing him back and they aren't going to come close to spending their full budget so it doesn't really hurt anything in payroll, just blocks some younger guys from getting playing time. With how his skills have diminished, he's going to have to get off to a pretty good start at the plate to be worth anything. Even if they do trade him, no way they will get anything other than minor league fill-ins, it will be a cost saving move. Outside of last year, Mauer's be worth near what he's been paid. Hunter won't come near being a $10 million player (which is roughly what Mauer was last year).

Looks like Hammon is headed to SMU. Sounds like he had quite a few FBS offers along with a UND and NDSU offer. Can't blame a kid for wanting to go back and play at the FBS level in his home state.

Fangraphs has his play valued at less than $2 million last year. He still has some pop left, but his defense has fallen off so much that it more than negates anything he does at the plate. Overall, he was barely above a replacement level player as an everyday player. And you don't give someone that kind of money to sit on the bench. This will end up clogging up the DH spot. Plus, he's not the clubhouse guy the media makes him out to be. Terry Ryan and Co. are likely thinking that this will please the casual fan. Unfortunately, I think they may be right: Big name (plus glory days kicker) + big contract = progress in the eye of the casual fan. I'd probably be more concerned if they actually were bumping up against their payroll limit but they have come near that in the last few years. And it's a one year deal, at least they didn't lock him in any longer.

So has every single one of Hakstol's teams, which is kind of the point. You can't win it all if you don't make the playoffs. Once you're there, anything can happen in a one and done situation. Hakstol has put his team in a position to have a chance to win the national championship every single year. I get they haven't won it yet, I'm just as anxious as the next person, but I'm glad UND has a coach who gives his team a chance without fail.
