I don’t think they’re that confident in our 5/6 defenders either. Last Friday night our top 4 D we’re all over 22 minutes in ice time. Third pairing guys were both at 13 minutes.

Yeah - It’s the first time all year he’s been able to practice. I’m sure everyone is thrilled to see him back on the ice practicing again.

I think Berry needs to figure out a balance between developing the younger guys and still putting the most successful team on the ice. I have felt for a few years now that we have sacrificed development of some of our younger players in favor of borderline overplaying the veterans. It’s been going on before this season but I think people overlooked it because things were going relatively well.

I’m not necessarily a fan of never offering scholarships to high school players myself, but it seems Berry is only going to offer the completely obvious D1/NHL prospect playing high school hockey. And to be fair, I don’t think he’s the only coach like this. That’s why all these high school hockey players are committing to more mid-tier college hockey schools that will offer them before they get to juniors. They don’t want to wait until juniors to commit a lot of the time.

Berry doesn’t seem to offer scholarships to kids playing high school hockey very often. A lot of these guy’s playing in this tournament might be more “keep an eye on and see how they do in juniors” types.

Huh? Who are we talking about? Bast was the only defenseman that missed significant time due to injury in the first half.

He played in the U18 exhibition game. He turned the puck over in the defensive zone and the other team scored. I think they opted for Moore since it’s become obvious we can’t play both because they are defensive liabilities. Look. I want to win games here. If they wanted to play Johnson as the extra skater I’d be okay with that. Power play could probably use him at times when it has struggled. Johnson’s plus/minus is good because he is a good offensive guy on the back end and we scored goals when he is on the ice. But his mistakes defensively ended up in the back of our net so I’m not sure how comfortable I’d be with him skating a regular shift. But then again I think the majority of our defensive issues have been because our third pairing has been really bad no matter who we play on it.

It’s really funny to me seeing 24 referred to as a defensive defenseman because the first time I saw him play in juniors in Alberta he had 2 goals and an assist in the 1st period of the game. His defensive game has actually improved a lot since then.
