My thoughts and prayers are with you, and those in your region. Please stay safe... and yes, I did take a moment to rejoice in my blessings. I guess sometimes we all need a little reminder. Thank you for that.

Brad BOMbardiiiiiiiir!

Maybe it's Siouxrock all grown up?

The possible Spirit lake Tribe reversal is not good, but I haven't really let this bother me too much. After all, the NCAA CANNOT make UND change the name. They can only have us cover up logos, wear different jerseys and the like. It stinks, but I can put up with it... maybe even donate an extra c-note for playoff jerseys. No matter what, UND will remain the home of the Fighting Sioux, end of story. If the NCAA doesn't grant an exemption, I can't wait for UND to sue their a$$es.

How in the he** did I not find that?! Thanks PCM.

On that topic, I was scouring the net for a comprehensive list of American Indian programs at UND. I found bits and pieces, but does anyone have an actual list? More for my own curiosity than anything. One of the letters from the "bridges" site lists 21 programs, but I don't think all of them are AI unique.

I've been wondering the same thing for a while now... a GF casino will definitely take business from Devil's Lake. As far as all that goes, if we keep the name and can't build a casino, so be it. I don't want a casino in GF anyway.

While there may be an effort underway, I think this is just another case of a name change advocate pushing personal agenda in the Herald. It seems like any time a UND prof mentions the nickname, the Herald is right there to cover it.

vaht?

Uhhhh.... UND? (I know, wild guess... )

Too bad for JB, but I must say... he went much farther than I would have ever expected. He should be very proud of his accomplishments!

Agreed, but I don't think that is the thought that Goon is conveying. No argumant here. Historically, the P.C. crowd has been at the forefront of the nickname issue, and are arguably more liberal than conservative. This political affiliation, IMO, is probably why FSU has the vocal support of their congressional represenatatives (republican) while we do not... at least at this time.

I remember the protest at the opnening night of the arena well... Russell Means and a bunch of white guys in Birkenstocks.

I guess what you just stated would be more of the point I was trying to make. "A few idoits who overreact" would be accurate. When I stated that this issue will be "pushed to the forefront of both the student

Maintaining political correctness within these threads, nobody has offered up the burning question of what will happen to race relations if the name is indeed changed. Here's my take: I think it is going to be a sad day for UND, and a sad day for the American Indian people on campus. After the name is stripped from its association with UND, we will undoubtedly see the abusiveness and hostility that Miles Brand talked about. I foresee any progress that has been made in race relations on campus taking a drastic turn for the worse. Hostility, stereotyping, and racial slurs that have been suppressed will now be pushed to the forefront of both the student

What, if anything, could the University do to keep the Sioux name associated with it's athletic teams? I would be interested in hearing your opinions on what steps they could take to keep the name, and at the same time honor the culture. Certainly a first step would be getting rid of the "Sioux-per Dog" type stuff, as many here have mentioned. I agree, it is ridiculous. What would it take?
-
Sorry for the re-post, but I really want to know.

Right on.

Sounds like he doesn't want to take on FSU very badly... hell, he sounded like he was on their side.

If I may add to the question, what do you think of the Sitting Bull sculpture outside of REA? Further, how will you feel when it is hidden under blue tarps and duct tape for the hockey regional next year? Respected? Honored?

As far as lawsuits go, I wonder if any cities will sign on. With the Alerus being a city owned building and potentially not being able to hold NCAA tournaments, there is a very real potential for lost revenue. Where "the city" specifically has a stake in this is in the lost ecenomic revenue from hosting the tournament. (hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, etc.) Can you even argue in court over lost "potential" revenue?

I agree it is frustrating, but I'm not so quick to jump on the administration for a lack of action. If history has taught us anything about our great university, it is that we don't jump into things without testing the waters. I happen to agree with this. If it turns out that Florida State is going to lead an aggressive charge to overturn this ruling, I say by all means let them. I have no reservations about riding on the coat-tails of a university with: 1) A kick-butt legal team 2) Considerable financial recources 3) Incredible national exposure Yes, I'd like UND to join in the fight, I have no doubt that they will. However, if another institution wants to step up and expend their resources at the forefront, and be afforded more national exposure than any other university on "the list"... I am more than fine with that.
