  1. For those of you who talk about "your rights", you again missed the point. 4 people who don't smoke didn't just show up at Starbucks in Fargo and decided this issue. It was put to a vote of the people of Fargo who had the "right" to vote if they were eligilbe. The vote of the people who exercised their "right" to vote decide the smoking ban was fair and passed the measure. Again the measure didn't ban smoking altogether. If you live in Fargo and voted and are expressing your opinion on this issue, like DaveK, I'll respect your opinion even though I disagree. If you didn't vote, but had the "right" to, not so much.
  2. Exactly. Seems like the smoking crowd can't figure that one out. But slamdance is right one one point: Common sense isn't so common.
  3. Not disputing your take on pharma, but to say they are at the table at the same level as tobacco is a leap. Pharma, for all their faults, helps provide a possible cure or solution to what tobacco causes. Not giving pharma a pass, but this is an apples to oranges scenerio. The healthcare system of this country that I work in has flaws that are too many to count. The main issue I see is that people don't take responsibility to their own well being. When they are sick or ill, they want a quick cure, like going thru the drive-thru at McD's, but they won't think about modifying their lifestyle. i.e losing weight, exercising, stop smoking,... There are no easy answers to the healthcare issues we face as a country. Bottom line is you, as an individual, need to take accountability for your own health. If you smoke, stopping is the single greatest lifestyle change you can make for the betterment of your health long-term. PS: I wouldn't want to receive healthcare in any other country but ours. It is not perfect here but it is still the best system overall worldwide.
  4. My wife, by education, is a Neuro/Ortho RN. She said when we got married the one thing I couldn't ever do is drive a motorcycle without a helmet. She said when she worked in that field, the worst of the worst traumas were bike accidents without helmets. Scrambled eggs!!
  5. Right on the money there. But why is that? More chronically ill people need more meds to sustain a quality of life. And why are they chronically sick? Again, no other risk factor, that is non-genetic and avoidable by choice, that causes more of a burden to healthcare system than smoking. It is just that simple. Smoking and it's complications/risks to the human body kills more people than any other controlled lifestyle factor--even obesity by poor diet choices.
  6. There is no greater burden to today's healthcare system than the health issues that come from smoking. ND BCBS just asked for a 15% premium increase and has continued to raise it's rates for years. Coincidence? The baby boomers, who grow up in the smoking culture, are now the one's coming in with COPD, asthma, hypertension, cancer, macular degeneration...should I continue? These are, just to name a few, illnesses on the rise that are directly linked to the adverse effects of smoking. Don't complain as insurance rates continue to rise and in the same sentence say "my rights" are being infringed apon! If your smoking leads to a non-smoker having chronic health issues, not to mention your own, don't come to me with "the deer in the headlights" look when I tell you your health issues are directly related to your choice to smoke.
  7. I think the point was it is amazing that UND fans would drive to GF from Fargo to watch D1 hockey in greater numbers than NDSU fans going across town to the BSA to watch D1 BB.
  8. There are 3, including my family, on our street!
  9. Fargo is a FB town first, then a baseball town. Basketball is overrated as much as hockey is underrated as far as popularity in Fargo. NDSU FB is very popular because they are very good. The Redhawks draw regardless--good entertainmnet and venue. Basketball, especially @ NDSU, is overhyped based on fan turnout. The Force will be well attended and will be a great addition to the Fargo sport's community.
  10. Classy Are you sure you don't live in Dilworth?? The answer to your problem is to stay at home. You want be bothering any non-smoker with your cigs and you want be a potential hazard on the road after leaving the bar with some liquor in your system.
  11. Lived in Williston for a few of years in the mid 90's and hunt frequently near the Bowman/Rhame area and I would argue that getting any community west of the Missouri River to support a smoking ban is less likely than communities east of the Missouri River. It is a different social mentality in western ND vs. eastern ND. Plus western ND people don't look fondly on eastern ND people. There is a definite dislike of Fargo once you get west of Bismarck.
  12. NICE!
  13. Martens for Miller is a good move. Martens is extremely undervalued. To me, he is a better option than Miller. And he is on par with Malone and Zajac as far what he brings as a 2-way player. When January rolls around Martens will be in the line-up if he doesn't start the year in the line-up.
  14. And we, as citizens of this state, wonder why status quo has reigned on ND reservations for decades! Oh, I'm sorry...is this the sterotyping NA are concerned with?!
  15. This whole situation can be summed up in one word: Pathetic!
  16. I'm with you. Hit Starbucks every AM at 6. Venti with 1/2 & 1/2, but 2 extra shots? I'd be mowing eveyone's lawn in the neighborhood by 7 am with that much of a jolt!
  17. Just grind some beans and put it between your cheek and gums and save some cash!
  18. Ok then...off to Green Bay and then?? Interesting, but there is a previous situation like this that happened at UND a few years ago so maybe he'll be back? But I doubt it.
  19. Agree. Wasn't probably his best highlight at UND, but that play sums up Oshie the best over the course of his career at UND. The best player on the ice is out-working everyone else. Makes a play very few can make when a big play needed to be made. Told my 7 year old that Oshie was turning professional and wasn't going to be playing for the Sioux next year. She smiled and said "That's ok", but then her eyes moistened and I knew she didn't really feel that way. He was great for college hockey and great for UND and it's fans.
  20. Had a similar experience with a prof that taught a philosophy class. She was a lesbian, she was way "left" on everything and seemed not to hold UND in high regard generally speaking per her comments in class. I, on the other hand, was/am male and not gay. I believe in individual accountability and responsibility in all facets of life and I am a big fan of UND the university. She was bound and determined though to try and convince you that any conviction or philosophical idea you had, that was not in line with hers, was wrong. Interesting class to say the least. There are a lot of profs at UND who think their job is to change, not teach, students.
  21. Now you are sounding like a mature, intelligent and responsible person. I truly hope this is the case so I will give you the benefit of the doubt here. Your previous multiple posts wouldn't indicate this but none the less this was good to read.
  22. Well if FWB can teach on the SLR, they would surely welcome these clowns, too!
  23. Don't think Sharpton can afford airfare to GF for the sit-in since he owes 1.5 mil in back taxes. But Maybe Jeanotte, Hans and FWB can pitch their "efforts" together for a spaghetti feed to help bail poor Al out.
  24. Cue the protest sit-in by Hans, Jeanotte and Sharpton. The actions by some student(s) at UND are despicable in these situations, but it also brings to light some of the idiots UND has on staff as faculty.
