Was Manson on a D-1 staff and I didn't realize it? Or a lower division head coach? I could not support a high school coach lacking those basic things on the resume for this job. That isn't setting him or the program for success. Too much would be easily second guessed unless the wins came fast and furious. He wouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.

Unless someone is taking this to the AG it seems like this has been questioned and ruled upon already by the Lt Gov. I would not be a bit surprised if UND refuses to change course and uses these grants for academics only in the future (if this program is continuing to be funded, I haven't read the bill and don't intend to do so).

There are those in the North Dakota media for whom there is only one football team in the 701 area code. I agree. 7 offers tells me it wasn't a matter of WI being down, but the staff batting avg there just wasn't good this year. When that happens you shift priorities elsewhere. Kudos to the staff for being skilled enough to do that.

Ranking this class vs other conf teams would be tough, but what about within this class? Any thoughts on who the top 5 gets are?

Attendance is the absolute highest priority for any stipend plan to work. The athletic department will have to operate on the financial assumption that all football games will operate at or near sellout levels. No excuses, get it done.

The point of my post was that at the end of the day, recruiting is celebrated every year no matter what happens. Coaches and fans will rip their team on the field and in the media when they stink, but the one area they don't deal in brutal honesty is on signing day. Your prime example is exhibit A. The daggers don't come out until after it becomes evident that the recruits can't win. Not a complaint, just the nature of recruiting.

If someone can recall the year where the coaches or fans of either UND or the ac got up and said "holy hell, this recruiting season was a disaster...we missed on most every guy we targeted", the bar tab is on me.

Muss' recruiting record is a paradox. I think we can all agree a class is judged by what happens on the field. But in the case of many recruits of the Muss era, they put up great fantasy numbers but couldn't win. Given that, can we still claim the recruits were good? Or do we say they were good recruits with a poor coach? But someone has to put them in position to put up those numbers. If it matters, I judge recruiting classes by wins and losses. While you can still have an all conference or all american on a bad team, if the team isn't winning then overall it wasn't a good class.

There isn't the volume of players in-state for that to be true anymore. Thats just simple math. In the D2 days, sure. I'd say the truism would be the school that wins ND/MN has the better future, but MN is not in-state.

The line between what recruits the fans want, and those actually being recruited, continues to get blurred.

I would describe what actually happened-injuries to #1 and #2 then being forced to pull a shirt that late in the season-as being "royally screwed".
