What has that series been like? I would expect Wyoming to have a few guys capable of playing in Laramie, but having the lowest population in the union probably hurts. ND v. SD would be better, but SD actually has a fair amount more high school aged population than ND. They were at 41k in 2000.

It's not a fair match up. Montana had 51,249 enrolled in grades 9-12 in 2000. North Dakota had 32,969. If you divide those by 8 to get a rough approximation for the number of male high school seniors, you're talking 6400 to 4100. I'd expect Montana to win every game. The fact that ND has won 3 of 13 shows extraordinary football talent per capita in the state. Just not much capita.

CJ is a program every university needs to survive.

63 scholarship equivalencies (IE, 2 quarter scholarships and 1 half scholarship mean 3 players make 1 equivalency) can only be given to 85 players. The maximum number of players on the roster is greater than 85. Kids who are allowed to come to fall camp that aren't in that 85 have to be declared to the NCAA as "preferred walkons". I think. After school starts, the maximum roster expands a bit and "traditional" walkons can become part of the team.

I guess, at this point, it'd be more of a backlash from current DI schools who had to wait 5 years but could've easily done the 2 year academic proving thing. NDSU, for example, could've probably done that. But we had to wait our 5 years. I guess it's about the same as paying your dues. I don't think it will change.

It's not to protect UND's student athletes, it's to protect the student athletes at other DI schools from UND's student athletes.. Consider this hypothetical scenario: school X, a DII school, signs a bunch of superman athletes who were unable to qualify academically with the DI standards but were able to qualify with the DII standards. school X moves up to DI the next year and is then able to compete at the DI level with the supermen for 4 years, even though those kids should've never been at the DI level due to their low academics. Essentially, it weeds out the DII academic guys so the school is working with only DI qualifiers when they start official DI play.

What else happened in sports between 1020 last night and this afternoon?

Veldman commits to NDSU via WDAY.

Bohl doens't tolerate off the field BS. He'd have a short hook.

Coaches offer more kids than they have scholarships for. It's the same principle used by admissions when they accept far more applications than the school could possibly have room for.
-
24 verbals now. Are you sure you have enough money for Veldman if he comes up there?
-
What I'm saying is that UND will have 36 in 07, the first year that these recruits will be with the team. Then, the next year, they'll have 57, which means these recruits will be seeing more money.
-
Oh yeah, I keep forgetting you're going to 57 next season. That makes sense then. They probably told a bunch of the kids that they'll get more money next year. I should note that NDSU had quite the recruiting class in 2003 (the our exploritory year class). Frick, Dahl, Walker, Dragosavich, Safe, Mays, were all in that class.
-
WOW, 23 verbels on a team that offers 36 equivalencies. And I assume you've got a full waiting for Veldman. You must not be offering a lot of these kids much?

Hey! That's my score. Look in the Super bowl thread.

Some on bisonville dream about never playing UND again unless it's the playoffs. That I think is pure fantasy. This year, though, there is a chance that we could fill up on FCS teams if the cards fall right. But I'll say it again, if it comes down to getting a DII in the Fargodome and UND is still available, it would be an absolute disservice to the school, state, nigh universe to not schedule them.

Maybe the golden briefcase, in homage to both having law schools.

I never knew UNI recruited northern MN. I though they got a couple guys from southern MN and that was it. *EDIT just looked at their roster. A few guys from the twin cities (2 of which are U of MN transfers), a guy from Rochester and a guy from Saint Cloud

Don't take it as my word: http://www400.pair.com/bisonvil/cgi-bin/ya...8003540/180#180

Aparantly Minnesota hasn't and will not offer Veldman. I guess it's down to NDSU and UND.

JimDahl is correct. For what it's worth, the GPI had been the top overall predictor of the at large playoff field until this last season, when the AGS poll outperformed it. This was sort've a weird year in that lots more FCS teams had games against FBS teams. Which is why you had #10 GPI Portland State not make it because they were 7-4 after losing to 2 FBS teams (though they did beat New Mexico). The AGS pollsters, on the other hand, correctly predicted that losses against FBS teams would not be taken heavily in consideration by the selection committee.

If they don't then he could go to any number of schools. Saint Cloud is 30 minutes from his house.

Interesting. I know of another school that has Sept 1st open as well...
