Remember that it's the Hurled you're talking about. I suspect the Maidenberg, Jacobs et al. got a collective woody whenever the name issue boiled up, and I'd bet they ran out of cigarettes when it was going full steam during the construction and opening of REA. Outside of the base closing or slimming down, an occasional flood, the stench from the beet plant and mosquitoes, there's really not much else going on in GF. So whenever some itinerant carpetbagger like Russell Means comes to town for 5 minutes, some idiotic college president like Saigo at SCCC or some weakminded student senate at 'SU rants against the name, the do-nothing losers decide it's "news" and cover it ad nauseum and provide a nice forum for the white liberals to write flowery editorals and letters to the editor. Then the "journalists" at the Stupid in preparation for their careers at tabloids and weekly shoppers follow suit with their mindless drivel. Pathetic, really.

I prefer the site "as is". I would rather the site concentrate on Sioux sports and UND related issues than break down into some oversized chat room for people with too much time on their hands and discuss every social, political and miscellaneous issue under the Sun. I come here, and POI, for primarily hockey-related content, and use USCHO to practice my "flaming" skills ... which I've been known to show off here once in a while.

Canadian colleges can use players who play or have played MJ at some time, unlike the NC$$. Don't know anything about Concordia, but it would be really f'ing embarrassing to lose to them.
-
I believe Crosby is signed with a QMJHL team for this season, I can't remember which one, so he cannot play for any NC$$ team.
-
Agreed. Curtis Murphy is really one who comes to mind, especially if Foyt has some offensive talent. Anyway, if he works hard and contributes I'm sure he'll find his place on the team.
-
I presume the NC$$ does, as the Men's D1 hockey tourney is their second biggest moneymaking event, right behind March Madness. Then again, most of the D1 hockey teams actually come from places with airports, running water, paved roads, etc. As far as your ASSumptions about hockey go ...
-
I've been enjoying D1 status for over 20 years, with benefit of schools that don't include "Middle", "Central", "Agricultural"," Northeastern", "Southern", etc. Enjoy the Greyhound rides to the inner rings of hell ... well, that might be an improvement over Brookings.

Usually in the toilet, where it belongs.

In view of some of the current idiocy that passes as governance in the NC$$, this is probably the best move they've made in a while. I'd guess that some of the bigger schools that use Indian names, e.g., Florida State, Illinois, etc. may have "cleared their throats" when this issue came up. Or perhaps they just realize what a half-witted kook Saigo is for condemning other schools' names as "racist" while his own paid out money for systemic anti-Semitism and racism on its campus, and there's still a DOJ investigation in the background. Glass houses ... stones ...

From my own perspective, I think the team benefits more from playing top-tier talent, like Maine, Michigan, etc., even if they lose, than if they fatten up on the Canuisus' of the world. In fact, given the normal ECAC/HE competition, I don't really mind when they play the Ivies, who have been known to have some pretty solid teams over the years. My own opinion is that the team got a bit lazy with their inflated record from the first half of the 2002-03 season and it cost them down the stretch.

The Strib has posted a guest book for Coach Brooks. Even if you don't want to sign, it's a very moving experience reading about his influence on so many lives. GuestBook

Link This is just being reported in the Twin Cities. Sad news indeed.

That's the biggest load of jingoistic crap I've read in a long time. Everybody with even a modicum of integrity knows the NC$$ doesn't give one flying damn about academics. If they did, they'd pressure D1 schools like Arkansas to raise its graduation rate for male athletes (BB players?) above 1% some day. I have seen no argument made that the D3 schools with D1 programs have any academic problems or that somehow the schools suffer from having a D1 program or two. A stupid, specious argument.

A very decent article in the Hurled about Brad Defauw getting his start in the NHL and his dad's battle with cancer. Link

Was happy to sign. Hopefully, the dinks higher up at the NC$$ see that the D3 schools bring a number of wonderful qualities to D1 hockey and they should not mess with the system.

Since David Hale broke Ryan's nose in practice when they were kids, I give 5-2 odds that he beats up both Martin and DeMarchi before September ... at the same time even.

We are judged by the "mistakes" we make. As such, Jake has another court date in the near future, and it will be determined whether his case proceeds, is thrown out or he pleads guilty. IMO Jake has done more to "tarnish" his image to fans, his coaches and his team than anybody on a hockey board.

No, actually, the domestic incident Brandt was allegedly involved in was posted by a UND fan who posts here and on USCHO.

Hell couldn't freeze that much.

I remember when Bobber fell off a table while dancing at a house party ... good form on the way down.

"Let's all join hands and close our eyes, as we attempt to speak to the spirits." You overstate your case if you believe that an arena is the foundation for a good program.

I agree Jim. Even when the Sioux under Gasparini were at their peak, old REA would still have empty seats. However, most of the Minnesota and Wisco series were SRO. If the team goes into a 2-3 year slump, e.g., below .500, I could see the crowds numbering in the old REA range during Gino's last years. REA management has to do whatever it can to keep cash flowing, year round if possible, to lessen the dependence on hockey and the fickle "fans" who sit in most of the seats. I could also see more pressure to bring in "brand" names to play hockey too, e.g., BC, the Michigan schools, the Ivies, Olympic teams, etc.
-
I would hope the NC$$ would have the good sense to at least "grandfather" D3 schools, that have a program or two at D1, but then again the NC$$ is so damn screwed up it should be an agency of the govt.

I don't necessarily see P-Mart as a direct competitor to Hale, so much as a complementary player as they bring different skills and playing styles. However, I agree that getting into the system earlier and gaining experience at the AHL and NHL levels can probably make the difference when it's close. NJ has a good rep for developing players over time, another reason I'm glad they drafted Parise, so I would expect them to put some pressure on P-Mart to sign now and get him into their AHL program at its longer, more rigorous schedule. I don't buy the standard line that another year at the college level does much for a player beyond his junior year when a year or two in the AHL would probably be more helpful over the long term.
