    UND/UNO

My first thought was that it reminded me exactly of last year's game.
  3. At one point Brad S. claimed the G.F. Herald was going to take this up this year. Any status on that, Brad? It's hard enough to get right that I'd happily yield to the guys with the big bucks if they're going to offer a decent service. Otherwise, I tested it last weekend with a non-UND team (only NCAA games show up) and it worked great. I'm going to do a limited test this weekend with UND. I might open up the test to message board readers tomorrow afternoon, which would help keep the crowd small. It should be widely available after this weekend, assuming the test goes well.
  4. I, personally, might not have created pages for each game that duplicated info available elsewhere. Keeping up things like box scores seems like a lot of work, when it's all already automatically generated from databases in other places (including elsewhere on this site!) My personal strategy would probably have been to try to link to existing databases (e.g. on a player page, link to his stats at hockeydb instead of copy them all over). However, I'm certainly not trying to discourage anyone from doing anything they find useful. The fun part of the wiki is definitely that it democratically gives everyone the chance to build whatever pages about the Sioux they think are cool or useful. If something proves too much work and becomes abandoned, we can deal with that problem then. I still wonder if it would be helpful to have a dedicated wiki editing forum where we could discuss issues like these?
  5. Those are going to be 12,000 bored fans.
  6. Polls are conducted by voters, who are taking into account previous years' performance (e.g. "GVSU is still #1 until someone beats them"). The SOS formula is only looking at what GVSU has done this year, which is generally beat a lot of mediocre teams. I talked a little about this in Football regional rankings released, but the key takeaway is the D-II win percentage of each school's opponents: UNO .5171 UND .4638 GVSU .4286
  7. A lot of browsers have (internally or via extensions) the ability to block cookies from specific domains. If you want to refuse cookies from a specific single server, you could look into that, too.
  8. As far as I can see, their system allows you 1 free view of a single article then forces a login. I don't see any links, or any way to construct the links, that behave differently. We can only link to what they offer -- reproducing their content would be stealing the advertising revenue they receive when you view stories in the context in which they choose to present them. Lots of people on the Internet try to share logins to such sites to avoid divulging any actual personal information, though lots of sites prohibit the use of such IDs. You're on your own interpreting the rules of the Forum sites if you choose to pursue that path.
  9. UND decided to stop giving unrestricted access to their free audio broadcasts this season, so it's a few more steps to listen to a game than it was before. You need to register for an account with them here: http://fightingsioux.xosn.com/liveEvents/l...DB_OEM_ID=13500 Once you have the account, you just click "Listen" next to the event.
  10. What is up with that? It's only the second time or so this season I've caught the Internet broadcast, and just tuned in right as we were going down by 10. Has it always been this bad since the "improved" system?
  11. That thread actually contains a lot of discussion about how people think UND and NDSU would match up, starting on about page 2 and ending when (as all NDSU threads seem to) it drifts off to UND hockey.
  12. Or maybe its just that thread authors can delete threads they originated.
  13. Yep. As do players, families, coaches, potential recruits, scouts, etc..., as I frequently try to remind people when they post something they wouldn't say to someone's face.
  14. Throwing up a message board is pretty easy -- $10/month will get you a hosting company willing to set up and configure one for you. Minimal technical knowledge allows a little customization (color scheme, logo). That's why there are fan message boards for almost every team at every level. Where it gets tricky is if you want to do much more than that, or if the message board starts to become very busy. When you hit those conditions, it requires a fair combination of technical expertise, time, and expense. SiouxSports.com has both problems -- a pretty busy message board, relative to the typical fan site, and a lot of customized features. While it may be true that economies of scale (e.g. running multiple such sites) would shift it to money-making, my day job eliminates both the time available and financial incentive to try to become a professional web guy. So, while I personally certainly wouldn't go so far as to put forth this kind of effort and expense for a team of which I'm not a fan, I have been very happy over the years to give others advice and assistance in their own endeavors. I know Chris over at eGriz is pursuing exactly such a business model, perhaps you should float the idea by him. http://www.missoulamedia.com/

    Goodbye NCC

NSIC's limits revisited This is hardly shocking...
  17. The move of the Canadian dollar above parity this morning, for the first time since 1976, could help a lot. When you consider that a Canadian with the same income has 62% more buying power in U.S.-dollar denominated goods than in 2002, G.F. has a significant opportunity to sell hotel rooms, sporting event tickets, and grinders with taco meat to Canadians.
  18. I don't actually think it has anything to do with NDSU, but I think this thread is what you're looking for.
  19. The Herald is now running it, but they're painting it as a story about a rumor instead of a story that Buning is out. I'm a little surprised to see a news organization run an admitted rumor on which they couldn't get anyone involved to comment, but for those who like links, there's one.
  20. I didn't mean to promise any specific change. For example, I've also had discussions with a designer and an artist on the possibility of making the existing logo more distinctly masculine, as I personally remain rather fond of the concept. My real point in posting was to reassure people that I am still reading this thread, taking their concerns seriously, and continuing to ponder the issue.
  21. I haven't posted in this thread in a while, so probably ought to give an update on the logo. I'm not overly concerned that some people have said "eh, not my style". I recognize that it is somewhat avant-garde, and won't be loved by everyone. I regret each person who doesn't like it, but acknowledge that finding something that's everyone's favorite is unattainable. However, as previously mentioned, I remain quite concerned about the recurring dislike of the androgyny. A noticeable percentage of people's initial reaction is negative based on a perception of femininity. That's a fundamental flaw that letting people "get used to it" won't overcome. I expect a consistent percentage of people to have a similar reaction as they are newly exposed to it going forward, and that's not good for the site or its fans. Before choosing this one, I commissioned a dozen variations on half a dozen distinct themes. They range from the relatively neutral (ornamentation on the text "SiouxSports") to completely different style Indian heads. I think the former is far less interesting but unlikely to be hated by anyone, while the latter will draw more "not my style, again" reactions but is far more interesting. I'm pondering if I want to go down that path again I'm considering my options, but some change soon is possible and I will keep you all informed. Rest assured, I will keep masculinity concerns in mind
  22. Ok, try again. I made an account with an exclamation point, couldn't login to the wiki with it, made a fix for that specific problem, and now can. So, if that's the only source of your difficulty, hopefully it will now work for you.
  23. I'm still reasonably convinced that's the problem, and my proposed solution worked for me in simulations of the problem. Since the fix didn't work for you, I'm going to have to move beyond simulating it and duplicate your situation exactly -- I'll make myself a new id that has the exclamation points, confirm the behavior, and try to fix it. That could take a day or two, so sit tight. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  24. My best guess trying to reproduce it is that it seems to be the exclamation points. Try logging into the wiki using your normal username, but the following five characters (without the spaces) in place of the exclamation points: & # 3 3 ; This is a somewhat diagnostic test, I don't necessarily expect you to have to login that way going forward.
  25. You should be able to use your message board login and password. If that's what you're trying and it's not working, let me know. It's possible that something unique about your account is causing difficulty. For example, I notice that your username contains punctuation; while I don't know that to cause a problem, it wouldn't be shocking.
