Sioux not winning many faceoffs
-
I'm agreeing with pretty much everything thats being said. Two years ago they needed to play goose egg hockey. They had 9 healthy forwards and one line that could score goals.
With this group you've got guys like Drake and Rocco that can create such speed with the puck coming out of the zone. This high off the glass and then red line and in just isn't as effective against good defensive teams. If St. Cloud or any team for that matter has five guys in their defensive end you are going to have a difficult time getting the puck to the net, simple as that. I like the fact that when UND gets a chance they give their defensemen every liberty to jump up into a rush to create more of an advantage when they're attacking with speed. We just haven't seen it a lot because you can't attack with speed when its high off the glass just about every time.
Their breakout scheme at this point seems predictable and easy to forecheck. That keep-it-on-the-perimeter mentality has our D constantly passing to a stationary (and covered) target along the boards. Maybe those aren't turnovers--call 'em turnbacks, because that's what happens most of the time.

I'm not upset about losing to St Cloud. What I'm upset about is our persistent inability to generate TEAM offense. Whether it be in the offensive zone or in transition, 5x5 or PP, it just aint there. Our scoring and scoring chances seem to all come from great individual efforts. See Jewels channeling Stevie Y circa 1988 and Rocco Mr. I get many breakaways and not many goals.
I feel like a broken record, but we just don't attack and come through the neutral zone with speed and numbers. You have to be able to make somebody miss one on one and then you need to hit the tape with your passes. It wasn't that long ago that our identity was that of a transition team!
It's a chip-it-along-the-wall-then-dump transition. Most often, it's a chip-it-along-the-wall-to-covered-winger-and-play-defense transition.

Some suggested Chyzyk sat last night because he took a dumb penalty Friday. So did Drake last night when we were on the PP. So did OD the night before. Now you have a captain going head hunting after he gets lit up. I guess there are different rules and leashes for different players now?? Because you won't see Drake or Parks sit next game.
All these conclusions based on "someone suggested?"

Rocco thinks a breakaway is like the shoot out, caught from behind twice tonight, speedster that quits skating, aye carumba
I didn't see it that way. He just mishandled the puck on the first breakaway. He is by far the quickest on the Sioux team but I don't know how he stands regarding down-the-ice speed.

Rocco almost seems handcuffed in this system. Again...too regemented. Hak has to give him and Drake the green light on occasion just to go out and fly around.
Aside from NC, Hak has gotten excellent results, but I agree that his system seems too conservative and regimented for some lineups to excel. The keep-it-on-the perimeter concept on the breakout and dump and chase in the O zone might be wasting some potential on this faster, smaller team. But I'm not a coach, and Hak has had great results, so I guess we wait and see if it comes together. Also, this St. Cloud team can skate; we should not forget that.
-
Have they switched the way they are hanging or is it just me? I swear they were left to right lowest year to highest, now it is highest on the left to lowest on the right or west side.
Bobby Orr still following you around?
-
I'm sure UND fans will get pissed that I say this but we need a coach who encourages the players to play less with their minds and more with their balls...Eades, Gwozdecky, York, etc.
That's a laugh, saying York teaches his players to play with their balls.
-
Well the right team won that game. You can't care for the last ten minutes after you gave up three goals on breakdowns.
Agreed. SCSU has the better team at this point. Give these Freshmen some time, though. With this squad, I think Hak will have to loosen up a little and turn them loose a little more often.

Nothing like a sense of urgency to win some races to the puck
-
Cue Don Merideth.
-
UND watching
Just hope they don't respond with something that gets them in the box
-
St. Cloud can skate. Great hockey to watch.
Our young D learning the game pretty fast.
-
wow is Stecher tremendous for a Freshman.....
That little spin move by the net under pressure wasn't a freshman move, was it?
-
It's hilarious that you can't argue points on their own merits, you have to try and discredit posters. If you disagree with the points made, the explain why. Simple fact is, you can't. I get a long with quite a few UND fans. It's nothing personal, it's a matter of opinion. Take a chill pill and engage in adult discussion.
The refrain of every Dubber downward spiral.
-
The rivalry is over plain and simple. By the time this series resumes in 2016-17 Michigan will have become a MUCH bigger rival to the Gophers than UND will ever be again.
It never was a true rivalry. More like a green cat playing with a half dead mouse. Or a green dog pushing a turd around with his snout before deciding that's the only kind of turd even he won't eat.
We'll miss that for sure.

Someone want to tell Hammer that wasn't Matt Frattin's first NHL goal?
God. After I said he was improved.
-
Hopefully, it's not a disc problem. Even a cervical sprain/strain could be a longer term issue. Finders crossed.
-
Team USA can play.
I have to say Hammer has improved. And someone must have whispered to him what a one-timer is.
-
Great atmosphere...nice arena...big crowds...nice marketing (Hockey Valley)...love the football helmet stripe and contrasting name-plate on the back of the home jerseys...well played, Penn State.
Surprised nobody lined up in front of the net for an extra point after the first goal.
-
Penn State will be good a lot faster than most think. Terrific brand new arena and an excited fanbase. Anyone see their home opener against Army? Place was packed(over 6300 capacity) with a great atmosphere. Not to mention they're already a pretty decent team. Won't take them long at all.
The state has an extensive great hockey tradition to build on.

Barry Alvarez note-to-self: next time, schedule games in Boston against Harvard and Northeastern.
Nope--Tufts

I do think that someone else should be considered on the top line with Jimaldi and Cadula. (sorry couldn't resist) Tambellini has incredible upside but for right now I'd give someone else a look. Reminds me a bit of the Greg Johnson years, where it was really tough to find two other guys that could play at his level.
From the very first time Greg Johnson hit the ice in his first game, he was doing sick things with the puck. Younger fans since the 80s don't quite realize what a talent he was. And smart.

The thing that has always frustrated me about our breakout scheme is how looooooong the Dmen hold on to the puck before they pass up ice, and then the forward has a guy all over him.
