  1. UND does not control this issue. SBoHE does. The SBoHE hired Kelley. Kelley hired Faison, so it woiuld make sense that since President Kelley cannot control the issue, his AD can't come out on one side or the other on the issue.

I'm waiting for a while to digest the information that comes out before I decide how I think about this issue but I will say that I don't agree with you here.

There are plenty of times in life, and I think this is one of those situations, where a person can have an opinion, but carry out his orders at the same time. I, personally, would have not issue with a person who says "I love the nickname and if I could save it I would, but this is the direction provided to me that I have to carry out and I will carry it out to the best of my ability".

I know UND is not the military, but I'll be there are many soldiers and officers who have been in this position multiple times in their life. In addition to that managers, who have to implement company policy. I know, I've been there. There is a time to hide your true feelings, and there is a time where that is not important.

Frankly, this decision was forced upon the school from elsewhere. I see no reason why Faison needs to act neutrally. He DOES have to act responsibly and carry out his responsibilities, so he may be forced to act in concert to retire the nickname. There's no shame in that. But I don't buy that he isn't allowed an opinion, unless that has been directed by his boss.

My guess is from a personal standpoint he feels this is the best way to work through the process, whether we do or don't agree with him. For me, I'd have more respect if he came out with his support (if he indeed supports it) while adding that he must carry out his directives.

  2. Just listening to Hakstol speak from time to time, and hearing some comments from people who have spoken with him, I don't think Hak needs any "pressure from above". He feels all of the pressure he needs just living up the standards of the Fighting Sioux hockey program. The man takes the legacy of the program seriously.

  3. The Big Sky does not object to the nickname, the NCAA does.

Why does the nickname need the adjective "Fighting"? Wouldn't "Sioux" be less 'hostile and abusive', and possibly receive Standing Rock approval? After all, that is what the nickname was for most of the history of its use - and if you go back to the Standing Rock pipe ceremony, wasn't that the name that was actually agreed to?

    No

Well, you'd have to explain why Fighting makes it any more hostile and abusive to the tribes? The nickname is based on a particular quality (a quality to be admired, I might add, not one to be denigrated. Why else would you select a nickname?). No different than if we called it the Fighting Pioneers, or Fighting Dakotans, or Fighting Vikings, etc etc.

  4. And who took Blais out to the woodshed in '98 and '99 and even '04?

Seriously. Blais = great coach. Hak = great coach. Yes, Hakstol still hasn't attained the national championships but that's not unprecedented for a great coach, either.

    We're lucky to have him.

  5. Not just the word "Sioux" but that logo (which is as American Indian related as it can get) puts UND on the NCAA list.

To keep that logo, just like the name, takes two tribes.

You may be right but it does bring up a question. UND was told to keep the nickname Fighting Sioux they had to have the two closest tribes consent. But if the nickname then changes, and the name is actually a reference to one tribe, would that possibly be a loophole?

  6. Gregoire

Knew after last night it was guts or glory.

Dell made huge save after they went up 1-0

    Trupp was huge.

People don't know how much skill those lob passes take. Maybe a little luck that it worked but it takes practice.

TH asked about Trupp. Gregoire said all seniors have been great but Trupp probably best player last month. Trupp only guy who can bounce puck on his stick during a game like that.

After last night players said it is their team they all said they had to play their roles and stay together and up to them to get better, felt they did that tonight.

  7. Hak

Great effort didn't always execute. First 10 minutes good.

Penalties on both sides in 1st and 2nd took away flow and hard on the legs for both teams.

Had more grade A chanced than they did on their PP's. Trupp was huge.

Don't like the rule that you get PP if goal is scored on delayed penalty. Profited from it tonight.

Needed to respond to some things we were seeing in our team, we responded, but we still have some things we have to work on.

Cichy didn't get a ton of ice time but made something out of every shift. Very happy with his performance.

Said something about how the refs were consistent calling things behind the play and after the whistle all weekend. Told the team after the first period they had to adjust and thinks they got it.

  8. I'm sorry, is it just me or does it seem like the Sioux are playing like a bunch of newbies to the game? Can't put a play together, no puck control, just can't seem to keep it in gear. ???

Agree, good effort but things just a bit off.

This feels like a game that the Sioux could give away because it's fairly evenly played but I think the Sioux have another level of their game they can attain yet. At the same time you think with a break or a bounce they could take over. Which way will it go?

  9. je3YCs.jpg

    Please pardon the crude artwork.

Spirit Lake already gave the University permission to use the logo.

Just got to change the nickname.

It's not my first choice, but....I could actually live with this.

  10. I'd say there is a lack of d-men for next year concern over anticipation of anyone leaving early. I don't see any D leaving early.

My google research has quite a few USHL fights popping up on this kid. And I see he's captain of his team, so he's got some leadership abilities.

EDIT: Here's an article about him from November:

    http://wcfcourier.com/sports/article_8f9dfb06-f798-11df-aa6a-001cc4c002e0.html

"He is a world-class skater. People don't realize that. We saw something in him. We told him to play hockey, be a defenseman, lead our defense by example."

The Sioux have had some good success with big physical guys who can skate. This kid isn't huge, but he's got good size and perhaps with the facilities at UND he can put another 10-15# on his maturing frame. Just internet scouting here, but if the coach is right and this kid can skate as well as he says, he's got grit and is willing to stand up for his teammates (I also perused the fighting links and on some of the vids it was obvious he was coming to take an accounting of someone who took a cheap shot at a teammate). He's been voted as captain, so must have some character/leadership ability.

These are all qualities that we like to see in players here. Maybe he won't make anyone forget David Hale or Matt Green or MacWilliam, but maybe he's a guy who still has a chance to develop when put in a role that doesn't include fighting as part of the description. Maybe he's got a chance to crack the lineup, or maybe he can just provide quality depth. Either way, I trust the coaches and he sounds like a good prospect to me.

  11. I was hoping for Dagies to tip his hand on choices since he did so well last game, but he is evidently holding out to protect his info. So I will have to go solo on my choices.

    Friday - Malone

    Saturday - Gregoire

I was waiting for you to make your picks. Ok....

    Friday - Gregoire

    Sat - Malone

  12. I thought I heard a while back that even with a record, you can pay $x.xx and get through.

As others have stated if you have a criminal conviction, and DWI applies, you may not be allowed in. There is an application process for a judgment that may allow you to cross the border anyway, but I don't know the specifics. Goon's information may be just what you need.

Fortunately, I've not been in that predicament.

And yes, you'll need a passport, or passport card.

  13. Blais will get plenty of love this weekend. He is still the revered coach that took the team to two national championships.

Three Scenerios: And the reaction that we'll see with each

~Mavs Sweep: BLAIS IS SUCH AN AWESOME COACH!!!! WE WANT HIM BACK!

~Split: Blais doesn't get swept on the road, he's too good of a coach!

~Sioux Sweep: Blais is doing good things in Omaha, they aren't where we at yet, but we wish them well because the sioux go their four points!

You forgot the "what if" either team was to give up a 2 goal lead.

  14. I think Blais is wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a standing O from the crowd pre-game on Friday. I hope he does, anyway. And then the fans can treat him like just another Gwoz or Lucia.

  15. I agree with Goon that these will be a couple of hard fought games. Obviously UNO has the ability to play a very tough game as their early season record showed. They may be struggling but that doesn't mean they will struggle this weekend. This should be a big weekend for them, coming to ND for the first time. They are going to want to show they are not intimidated. And you can bet Blais is preparing them so they aren't all wide eyed at seeing the Ralph.

I think the Sioux should take them both but I don't think they will be easy games. At least not both.
