  1. 5 Greatest College Hockey Programs of All Time

    Link: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/773887-college-hockey-greatest-hockey-programs-of-all-time#/articles/773887-college-hockey-greatest-hockey-programs-of-all-time

Pretty nice to read stuff like this. Too bad JT Miller didn't get to read this before deciding to bail. :glare::D

When North Dakota is on the road, the Sioux often listen to the jeers from the fans calling them "Gopher Rejects!" It should be that the Gophers are "Sioux rejects."
  2. Yeah...he exudes Goofer arrogance to the fullest. Blaming the other schools for doing what they think is best, while UM and UW started all this mess. It's pretty easy to say "B1G" was inevitable and UM had nothing to do with it, but then turn around and blame UND and DU for thinking for themselves on the deal??? his attitude is right in line with what I'd expect. basically, he says, ...we're set, but others shouldn't do anything that will kill the small guys. Doh-Kay. State of Hockey is a joke.

On the other hand, I don't totally believe this move is the best for college hockey or the Sioux. Personally as a fan, I will miss having most road games within driving distance.. The local connection and rivalries will be lost since it will hinder streams of Sioux fans traveling all over Minnesota to see games in opposing rinks like in present times. I do know that St.Cloud, Mankato, etc... will miss the added revenue the city receives as a result of UND not playing in those arenas year after year. also, the regional rivalries and fan interaction will fade away.

One thing i do disagree with most college bloggers is that the lost revenue at the rinks for teams that are left out. i have seen some of our best Sioux teams play in front of 800-1200 spectators at opposing rinks. if not for Sioux fans, the buildings would be empty. so, i don't think rink revenue will suffer all that much for the left behind schools at the gate. Michigan Tech will still have the same amount of fans at the games in Houghton whether they play Mankato or North Dakota.. Revenue sharing with tournaments etc, is the killer for them.

You are right on with Hammy. What pompous ass.

Totally agree with your sentiment about the "local" games. I'm really going to miss going to games in SC and Mankato, as well as the Final Five.

  3. Not picking on anyone in particular here, but a point of clarification is in order. Minnesota and Wisconsin had two choices regarding Big Ten Hockey: follow Big Ten rules and move their program(s) into the newly-formed conference; or quit the Big Ten in all other sports. They couldn't be in the WCHA once the BTHC was announced.

I'm not trying to stick up for either the Gophers or Badgers, but in matter of fact, they really had no choice.

I get that. But I don't think they deserve much slack for it. In the end, they made a decision that they had to make, and if that was harmful to others, they still bear responsibility for it.

I think, as you say, it's easier to understand why they did what they did, but they are still responsible for starting the process.

  4. Seems like the NCAA got into the Big Sky's ear.

Also, they said they would support the wishes of the Native American tribes. The inference is that the tribes don't want UND to use the nickname. Yet that's not the case with Spirit Lake, and we pretty much know the will of the people in Standing Rock. Of course, the official position of SR is against the nickname, but that only makes it a 50-50 deal in that context.

  5. Rich tradition and history who have fought for centuries? Bud, Wounded Knee was 120 years ago. Since then, all the "sioux" have done is sit on reservations...drink cheap alcohol, smoke a lot, live in their own filth, get fat, and complain about their "people" having land stolen from them. And if it pays them so much "homage" why didn't the one tribe not even vote?

I've told people before that I would be more than happy to be the Farmers or Aggies, it is a nickname. A NICKNAME. Not like they are shutting down the program.

I'm not sure which of these forum rules you directly violated but what you posted was disgusting. Stop with that now.

No personal attacks, defamation, or libel

    No profanity or obscenity

No racial, ethnic, or sexual slurs

  6. Everyone in the world knew that was the outcome if the University decided to stick with the logo/nickname.

The only surprise is the NCAA saying, "yeah, we'll meet" and then backing out.

I've been wondering if the new president was willing to give talks a "go" until Franklin and the Policy cronies got in his ear and said "WHOA now, what are you doing? We don't have to meet anyone half-way".

  7. As I sit here having just watched #6 Montreal's Carey Price beat #3 Boston 2-0, and #7 Buffalo's Ryan Miller defeat #2 Phillly 1-0, both on the road, I understand even more how lower seeded Michigan and a performance of a lifetime from Hunwick can happen last Thursday. And this is especially so in a 1-and-done format.

More food for thought (thanks PCM):

Wow, thanks for posting this. And thank you to PCM for doing the work. I knew the Sioux dominated the game but these statistics really round out the picture.

  8. I would venture to guess that they do scout the other teams and try to exploit their weaknesses. You don't publicly tell the world and the media your strategies and what you are planning to do when you are in a competition.

Well, you should so that the masses of internet experts will know what's going on.

Then why is it the team never looks prepared and pretty much always falls behind at the F4 if you believe they are well prepared? Which F4 other than the first one did our team look prepared ? Even this year that first period stunk. One other thing, if we don't score a goal on the PP in both the WCHA F5 and the NCAA regional, shouldn't that be a point of emphasis leading up to the F4? I'd sure hate to think they worked on that for two weeks considering how it looked. It was just plain bad. Hak had to know the only way Michigan could beat us was to slow us down with the clutch and grab, and our PP should have been the difference, but it was MIA...again. No PP goals in the last 5 playoff games is not good. I guess I choose to disagree on the preparation of the team leading into the F4 as I've said the same thing after the prior 3 F4's too. Oh well, maybe next time he can prove me wrong. Hopefully someday we shall overcome.

Never looks prepared? Like beating Denver 6-1 in the regional final? Maybe Hak quit preparing once they got to the Frozen Four.

  9. They are working on the highlight reel for his 40 saves and they are having trouble finding the second one; how long did it take to figure dump and chase on the power play wouldn't work againest MI? And if their defense outplays our offense, how did we outplay them?

just sayin..........................................its over and I'm still going to Tampa. I'm a college hockey fan and a fighting sioux fan!

there's no doubt the power play didn't work well in that game. I don't know what the reasons are or if that was coaching or Michigan executing or Sioux players clenching their sphincters too tight. I don't know. I know that the Sioux were all over Michigan in that game but couldn't get the right shot off at the right time.

I'm not going to blame a coach if the only thing that didn't go well was the power play and shots that couldn't find open net. No team has a perfect game plan, and no team executes perfectly. Some do better than others, however, and there is luck involved as well. We know Michigan executed very very well. We know the Sioux executed very well except for their PP. I believe Michigan got luckier than the Sioux.

I'm not going to nitpick the PP and rip the coaches for it. I'm just not. The Sioux played well enough to win this game and they just didn't get the puck in the net. I really think that's what this loss all boils down to.

  10. WAY TO GO UMD!!!!! I'm happy for UMD and their fans except for a couple of them.

I'm way happy for the UMD fan who sits 2 rows behind us at the Final Five every year. Wish I could shake his hand right now.

Yep, kind of sticks the knife in again a little bit, but I'm happy for UMD.

  11. Seeing as though he didnt get as much playing time as he liked, means he probably didnt devolop as much as he wanted and this is his draft year if im not mistaken. Im willing to be his draft stock went down. Once he gets drafted, we will see but i could see him leaveing cuz of lack of playing time this year even though hes pretty much guarenteed a ton next year.

What, Simpson is going to leave the program now because he's pissed about his playing time? I'll bet it was made pretty clear to him coming in he would have to earn his spot on the ice. I'll bet his Dad is familiar with having to earn ice time in the big show too. And now, when there is plenty of opportunity to play next year he's going to walk?

IF that's really the case, good luck to him. We don't need that attitude.

However, my guess is that isn't the case. My guess is he's a big part of next year's team. And a welcome one at that.

As for Kristo not going to class, I heard that too. From about the end of January to some time in March. ;) I don't know about anyone else but I read his interview in the Herald, and if I recall correctly I think he said he even missed going to class.

I don't know what Kristo's plans for next year are, but I bet he hasn't just quit going to class and made the decision to leave already.

  12. It's fantastic to hear the Nick is having his last treatment. Continued good news to you all.

What a great post, The Greek. It really puts things in proper perspective.

We are lucky to be fans of the best college hockey program in the world.
