My favorite Howard Walker story ... One game, a line brawl broke out. It's the 1970's and so it happened commonly. And it's right in front of the student section at the old Winter Sports Center. After the first couple guys start throwing down, everyone starts pairing up. Couple opponents look around, pretend they don't see Howard Walker, and pick a different Sioux player. Eventually, its just him and a smallish guy - think 5'7". Walker grabs him by the front of jersey at the collar, picks him up, shakes him a little, and just drops him like a load of laundry. Guy gets back up, tries to throw punches at Walker, but is held at arms length (think Three Stooges type of flailing). Howard rolls his eyes (no masks remember), picks him up off the ice at arms length and drops him like a load of laundry again. By this time we are all laughing, and Howard looks over at us and starts laughing too.

M77 probably learned the rule book from Ben Clymer (of the Bally announcing team), who not only didn't know the rule book but went ballistic "with sprockets" (WTH?) when refs sent M77 to the box. I'll put these two together and note the last time the Sioux and Gophers played exhibition games was 1978-1979. Friday night in Minot and Saturday night in Eveleth for the US Hockey Hall of Fame. One long brawl, since the games didn't count and you got to send a message.. ( I Don't think that much brawling would happen in 2024-2025.) And, yeah, those were the first two games with Gino Gasparini as head coach.

Once we get all our players in tune to play five-man defense in our own zone, we will be formidable. tonight, it feels like we stole one.
