How typical of the intellectual heavyweights at Moo U.

I'd have to agree with the USFL. I was in high school at the time and I remember the NFL being scared $#!+!@$$. Had the USFL succeeded, does anyone think we'd see this lockout business and owner arrogance at such a level? Good points above. The NCAA is a unique beast, however. I truly believe that if push came to shove at this point in time the NCAA would be seen as a de facto monopoly. Let's hope that the NCAA imposes new sanctions on UND other than those stated in the surrender agreement so the State can pursue it with new claims. The many anti-nickname Chicken Littles commenting on the Herald editorials don't seem to understand how to read and interpret a settlement agreement.

Are we sure that this synapse-impaired cretin is not yet ANOTHER anti-nickname "plant"? The racist anti-nicknamers have been known to ghost racist and inflammatory vitriol on here before (Grahamcracker, lomackman, lakes Bison, etc).

Very astute take. I agree. Speaking of the SR Tribe being partially in SD, I suppose one could justify a modification of the agreement based upon mutual mistake or impossibility of performance. The mistake was the presumption that there were/are 2 ND Sioux tribes; there is only 1 ND Sioux tribe that is contained completely within the state's boarders. Wouldn't the agreement, to be accurate, have had to say that all ND and SD Sioux tribes would need to approve? Jesse Taken Alive, himself, said that trying to force the South Dakota members of the SR tribe to vote would be like the United States trying to force Canadian citizens to vote on a United States issue/law. Makes sense to me.

Forum Opinion Hit Piece on the NCAA and the SIOUX
Chewey replied to BobIwabuchiFan's topic in UND Nickname
Kelley's very public sharing of the letter to the NCAA and the NCAA's response are both very transparent, especially when viewed in light of the recent concerted propaganda from Jacobs, Omdahl, etc. It's basically a situation where Kelley, with a nod and a wink (figuratively speaking)., asks the NCAA to "clarify" its policy in light of the new legislation (translation: Please restate your consequences language from the settlement agreement), the NCAA obliging and then the agenda-driven doomsayers at the Herald following suit with the "sky is falling" editorials. Others on this board called it correctly at the time when Kelley's letter went "public" and their conclusions certainly have been proven accurate. -

I find Lloyd's support about as genuine and reliable as his powers of perception. A.) He does not agree with the NCAA that the nickname and logo are objectionable PLUS B.) Majorities of the NA's on Spirit Lake and on SR do not agree with the NCAA that the nickname and logo are offensive DOES NOT EQUAL C.) Not being a patient, I can not say where it hurts. This is just more gibberish that really counts for nothing at all except to serve as an example of how one can wax in intellectual disingenuousness and wallow in illogical desolation and, evidently, like it. The truly scary thing is that Lloyd's haphazard funny-speak actually resonates with some, particularly the anti-nickname twits who extol that stuff in the comment section. -

NCAA Meeting - On Fighting Sioux or Et Tu Brute?
Chewey replied to BobIwabuchiFan's topic in UND Nickname
I hear you there and I agree. When I was in Law School at UND, the Fighting Sioux finally beat the Bison after a long drought and then they beat Pittsburgh State, all at home. It is a big deal and it is something to look forward to and I am not trying to denigrate those sentiments. However, I think that losing the tradition of 80 years and the most unique nickname and logo in the country (Pro and college, in my opinion) would be far more damaging long-term than the loss of hosting playoff games for one sport. There won't be any home playoff game eligibility for a few years, as I understand it so I don't see the level of harm that some people do at this point. Even if it were to happen in the future, it could be used as an unspoken selling point, in my opinion. I don't think it would distinguish UND in a bad way, necessarily. The NCAA is not highly regarded, as I see it, across the whole spectrum. It's a necessary evil because it's so entrenched with the money and the connections and the big contracts and unless its sordid and grimy and rotten fiefdom is kicked in it's going to continue being a necessary evil. It's a scandal-ridden, tax-evading, crony back-slapping, parasitic blight on all athletics, not just college athletics, and it's going to take some politicians with backbone to right the ship. Having hearings on its tax-exempt status is a start. This is a good thing. People need to see the monster that the NCAA is and they need to demand redress from their political representatives. Settlement agreement or no settlement agreement, the NCAA is picking on UND and treating it differently than other similarly situated institutions. Its ongoing imperious, illogical and capricious executive committee fiats affect a lot more on a broader scale than UND. People should be up in arms about this obvious but constantly mutating heavy-handed and discriminatory treatment by a quasi-public entity as to all institutions -- both publicly funded and privately funded -- rather than cowering in fear in submission to that low-core aggressive conduct. -
Yes, and I'm sure that U of M and U of W will find ways to do it based upon "prior commitments" and "historic program affiliations with the school". Translation: There are a lot of ND fans/natives living in MN and WI and they'll pay a lot of money to see their team play ours.

NCAA Meeting - On Fighting Sioux or Et Tu Brute?
Chewey replied to BobIwabuchiFan's topic in UND Nickname
Agreed. Too much is being made of this -- way too much. If anything, that would cause a team to bind together more tightly -- A good example would be the D3 football team of Pacific Lutheran in 1999 with coach Frosty Westering. They were obviously not subject to "sanctions" but they indicated that the road actually helped with their championship run rather than hindered it. I doubt very much that the "sanctions" are going to affect recruiting that much, if at all. This same sort of thing was proffered at Illinois with the retention of the Chief. Members of the faculty were saying that recruiting would be hurt if the Chief were retained and "sanctions" imposed. Surely, potential recruits would not want to be identified with such a "racist" symbol and "insensitive" institution. Well, the faculty members themselves were interfering with recruiting and Illinois certainly has not gotten any more competitive since the Chief was ousted. I'd say they're even less competitive. They and Indiana thank their lucky stars for the god-awful Minnesota program; otherwise, they'd be at the bottom of the Big 10 -- er, Big 12. Now, there are more informal Chief dances off-campus (just off-campus), as I understand it, than there ever were on campus when the Chief was there. You got to love the strength and persistence of the voice of dissidence. -
You have some legitimate points and I see where you're coming from. I agree about the PP; it was at the very least irrelevant. I disagree with you though about preparation. The Sioux spanked Denver 6-1 in the regionals so Hak and Eades had to have the guys prepared for that. I was stunned that Denver got whipped the way they did but I was not surprised that the Sioux won. But for a hot goaltender, I think Michigan would have been a second Denver for the Sioux. The Sioux peppered Hunwick with some pretty good shots, like Frattin's top shelf glove side attempt, but Hunwick saw everything. Denver had a better goaltender but the pucks were going in. Hunwick's obviously a good goaltender too but I think on any other night he would have been lit up by the Sioux just like the Denver goaltender (who almost stoned the Sioux at the Final Five) at the regionals.

Yes, what moron makes fun of a natural disaster and how that destroys lives? I am sure karma will be making its rounds with him soon enough (you know .... if you wish or make fun of bad happening to someone else bad usually finds you out, too). There's a strange "He wants you, too, Malachi" "Children of the Corn" reference there.

Why would anyone want to coach at Tech? It's not a career boost, to be sure. It's not like the coaches they've had have been bad. It's not like the olden days when Tech got some really good players from Northern Michigan and Ontario who wanted to stay close to home. They've had some great players over the years, like Tony Esposito and Andy Sutton and Jamie Ram and many others. Now, top notch players don't want to be stuck way up in Houghton. That's just my kind of area though. I've heard that Michigan Tech has a pretty rigorous curriculum and I'm sure they do but I am not sure what potential athletes have to do. Are they obligated to take all of the math and science and physics courses there or can they take things like psychology or sociology or history? Michigan Tech is, after all, a technical school so I am not sure if it even offers many courses in the Humanities or social sciences. Like me, not every one is cracked up to be an engineer or physicist (thank God). I'd like to see MTU good again like they were in the 60's and 70's when they spanked their national title opponents by 5 and 6 goal margins. They were .500 a couple of years ago and they had some good teams in the 90's, so it's not like it can't be done I guess. Players of some years back such as David Backes and Mike Peluso, Junior Lessard, etc. could have thrived there because of their love of fishing and the outdoors but Houghton is not for everyone. The are probably THE founding member of the WCHA so I'd like to see them stay in the league rather than bolting to the CCHA. It would make sense to get NMU back into the league, I think.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully, the Fighting Sioux will bring home a national championship to help pick you up. Dogs are wonderful companions. Hang in there.

This fight has galvanized solidarity and resolve of the Native Americans, UND Alumni, much of the population of the state and most of the university community and who all support the nickname and logo. The courage and good will shown and shared by all of these parties, especially the Native Americans such as Archie and Steve Fool Bear, Tom Iron, Mr. Chaske, Eunice Davidson and so many others who have fought for their people's right to be heard and for all of us to be heard too, is the foundation upon which to further strengthen and develop solid relationships with the tribes. Does anyone else think it sweet that the fight against not only the perfunctory sham adherence to the surrender agreement's provisions (other than, of course, the drop-dead date of November 30, 2010) but also the surrender agreement itself is the thing that has strengthened relations between the tribal members and UND/Alumni/State and has given the Native Americans a voice in this whole thing when the surrender agreement itself was supposed to have done that? Truth is stranger than fiction (I wonder if the English profs who have demonstrated against the nickname and logo and who have called students, alumni and Native Americans who support the nickname and logo "racists" know where that line comes from). The reality conveyed above just demonstrates how big of a sham the whole surrender agreement is/was and it speaks volumes about the lack of good faith the SBoHE, Kelley, Faison and others had vis-a-vis its implementation. When the Native Americans, the supposed beneficiaries of the surrender agreement, saw the obvious, they fought like hell and continue to fight like hell to be heard; they have been heard. The white man in the surrender agreement tells the Native Americans that they have a right to be heard but when they want to take steps to be heard the white man puts up every road block to prevent them from being heard; yet, they are heard still and forcefully heard at that. In many ways, we really should be thanking the anti-nicknamers for the opportunity to have this fight, for it has done much to strengthen ties between UND/Alumni/State and the vast majorities of both tribes. It has done much to prove that the majority of the Native Americans associate with the nickname and logo and are proud of it. We all remember the cries of the indignant white professors and administrators and the handful of Native Americans, like Leigh Jeanotte, when this started: THE NATIVE AMERICANS ARE OFFENDED AND INSULTED BY THE NICKNAME AND LOGO AND THEY MUST GO. Thank you anti-nicknamers for the opportunity to show how big of a lie that was and still is. Thank you for your constantly shifting and bobbing and weaving and back-stepping and side-stepping and factually unsupported and falling flat on your face arguments. They have been and continue to be very helpful. This whole show has been one big lesson in irony. The English professors and the UND administrators and all of the other anti-nicknamers have lived it and, indeed, have accentuated the concept. F. Scott Fitzgerald couldn't have done a better job himself. I guess they are "educators" after all. I know they have the concepts of propaganda and overstatement and hyperbole down but I wonder if they'll use this example in any first-year writing course when the concept of irony is discussed.

NCAA to drop settlement and sanctions if UND wins title
Chewey replied to Dave Berger's topic in UND Nickname
Massive douche...... -
And how about some of the Native Americans who support the nickname -- Archie Fool Bear, Steve Fool Bear, Tom Iron, Eunice Davidson, Tom Chaske, etc.? The settlement agreement was intended to provide the Sioux tribes with a voice and not one Native American has been invited? That's a mis-step right there. Get it right Mr. Governor, if you please. A major issue is that one tribe is being prevented from voting. Another issue is that nickname supporters would be accepting of a vote there, if one were allowed. Why aren't people from both tribes being asked to go?

I agree but no offense was probably intended. I agree vehemently and viscerally with Shaft and am extremely disappointed in how he and the other SBoHE members have mishandled and botched this whole thing but he did not deserve to have dog poop thrown in his yard. That's something I'd expect from the anti-nicknamers.

You make good points. Paul Allen had someone on today discussing this weekend's regionals, lamenting the fact that the Gophers suck and aren't there, begrudingly giving the Sioux credit for how the program has retained its strength over the years , the morgue that is Mariucci Arena, and the BTHC. The guy -- and I don't think he's officially part of the U of MN -- said as follows: 1.) That the knobs have their "policy"; 2.) that Maturi has not indicated that the policy is a be all and end all thing; 3.) that the "policy" is stupid both economically and otherwise; 4.) that there are a ton of rabid Sioux supporters in the TC and within 1 day's driving distance of the "X", 5.) This means a ton of money when the "X" and Mariucci and TCF Stadium are filled to capacity; 6.) that the powers that be understand that money means more than "policy"; 7.) that when/if the time comes, the powers that be will find away around the "policy." I don't think anyone disputes that the worst case scenario is a possibility. But, when money's involved, even the academics (so-called -- a complete misnomer when considered vis-a-vis many of the staff at UND) get it (See NC$$ example of namesake tribe exception for FSU, selling Sioux gear, etc). Here in MN, it may be prudent to contact one's local legislator about the "your name insults us, we won't schedule you" funny business. In tight economic times with even the Almighty "U" begging for more funding, not scheduling things that would certainly make money is just stupid and serves as a basis to dock and reduce funding (Actually, I already have done this). We should not tuck tail and abandon 80+ years of tradition in the face of fear alone. We should be saying : "This is who we are and this is how we're staying. If your 'policy' is worth more to you than the revenue you'd get by playing us, fine. The drives to Lincoln and Ames are only a few more hours than the drive to Mpls and we'll get to play real football programs one of which is also in the Big Ten. Oh, and we're sure the U of Texas and U of Oklahoma would love to beat up on us for awhile. Good luck to you and Jerry Kill in resurrecting your feeble football program. What has it been for you, 5 or 6 coaches now? Oh, and we almost forgot about the BTHC. Have fun having your hockey games played on tape delay and being at or near the ass-end of programming priority. We're sure that Mariucci and the "X" will be filled with TONS of fans from Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Columbus and State College all of which are a mere 800 to 900 miles away. Meanwhile, we'll continue to fill our stands with games against UMD, UNO, SCSU (whose fan bases are nearly as rabid as ours) and other historical powerhouses like DU and CC and we'll continue to get the best recruits - yes, even some Canadians (because we're not stupid and know they can play good hockey too) - because we've put more college players into the pro hockey ranks than any other school. Just allow marijuana on the premises at Mariucci and TCF Bank Stadium and we're sure the hippies who've been promoting your 'policy' will fill the stands. Regrettably, they won't be watching or caring about the ever-deepening pathos that is your FB/hockey program. Take care." People come to UND to wear the jersey and to be known as "Fighting Sioux" especially in the hockey program. -

I think Bradley is on some stupid "double secret" probationary period in order to see how many sleepless nights are suffered by the pseudo-intelligensia there because of Bradley's big, bad nickname.
