  1. Ever wonder why the Sioux defense is known for its muscle? Look at these professional stats for Brad Berry: After graduating from the University of North Dakota and three seasons with the Fighting Sioux, Berry played 241 games in the National Hockey League with the Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota North Stars, and Dallas Stars from 1986-1994. In that time, he collected four goals and 28 assists for 32 points and 323 penalty minutes. He also played in 13 Stanley Cup playoff games where he collected an assist and 16 penalty minutes. Berry also appeared in 404 games in the International Hockey League with Kalamazoo and Michigan from 1991 until his retirement following the 1999 season. He scored 23 goals and 77 assists for 100 points and 538 penalty minutes in the IHL. He also played in 21 Turner Cup playoff games where he scored two goals and five assists for seven points and 22 penalty minutes. In the American Hockey League, Berry played in 86 games with the Moncton Hawks where he scored five goals and 28 assists for 33 points and 111 penalty minutes. Berry was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets with their second round choice, 29th overall, in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Gotta love a guy who recognizes his own strengths!
  2. Hmmmmmmm, Sprig, Rick...raising he77 in Walsh Hall in the early 70s? I was an RA there and then. What an experience! With that kind of stuff on your resume I'm sure the AD would love to talk to either of you for the coaching opening.
  3. As do many, many others Diggler.
  4. I got to know Gordy pretty well while we were both students in the 70s. He was not as athletically gifted as his cousin Alan, but Gordy was a wonderful, funny, sharing and caring young man. He knew he wasn't going to be the go-to goaltender; he knew he wasn't the top athlete on the ice. But he also made a point to be positive and best of all happy every time he strapped on the gear. The Sioux family is missing one of its bright lights today. RIP
  5. Um SiouxMeNow, get down off your high horse. Fargo-Moorhead is supportive of hockey, especially of youth. I think the annual Squirt tourney here is the nation's largest, with teams traveling from both coasts to play. And this is not the Stanley Cup's first visit to the city. It was here two or three years ago IIRC. A couple little buddies of mine got their pictures taken with the Cup, but they were careful not to touch it! They didn't want to jinx themselves!
  6. Yeah, think of what the poor kid would be making if he had a college degree?
  7. I think this is what THN was talking about, sagard. And I also believe the fact that Toews does go into the corners and both take and dish hits, is why JT is, and will continue to be a better all-around player. Oh, and yeah, MM, nice going on the Daigle reference. You, sir, are a great hockey mind.
  8. I apologize if this has been cited previously, but I find these two quotes from The Hockey News draft grades particularly telling: Contrast that with this: As is the case in all things, time will tell. But Mr. Toews certainly comes out on top in this comparison, and should be heartily congratulated.
  9. I realize this is a little premature (only 19 picks made as I post this) but all the talk of a big crop of college players being drafter early doesn't seem to have come to pass. A little surprising to me.
  10. I'd like it noted for the record that I was NOT struck down by lightning last night or so far today. If anyone is interested in my continued well-being, I'll try to post daily for awhile. If you notice me missing in action...well, at least I had a good run!
  11. Like this? Our father who art in hockey, hallowed by thy game. Thy draftday come, our stars be gone, be they in Chicago or St. Louis or St. Paul. Give us another year of our young skaters, and protect us from agents and contracts and gms. Lead them not into pro hockey leagues; deliver them from the dotted line. For they are our power, our future and our eighth banner, this year or the next. Amen.
  12. Sounds like many unresolved issues here folks!

    Sad News

I met JeffJeff more than 30 years ago. He was a remarkable person. I believe he has left a legacy to Fighting Sioux athletes through a scholarship fund which bears his name. Makes me recall the adage "from tiny acorns mighty oaks grow." A lesson for all of us. Rest in Peace.
  14. Is it my imagination, or is the University of North Dakota receiving an inordinate amount of on-air mentions during the finals? I swear that just about every time Commie or Greene's names are mentioned, the announcers add "from the University of North Dakota". I don't think other college programs are being cited nearly to this extent.
  15. It's over. Done. Finis. Hopeless. The Ralph will be a half-empty morgue. Corporate sponsorships are already being cancelled and renegotiated. Rumors aboud that a few current players are in conversations to transfer to more stable programs like MTU and UAA. Oh the horror! Fighting Sioux merchandise is being steeply discounted all over the web. I hear that UND is going to accept the NCAA ruling on the Fighting Sioux logo not being allowed in playoff appearances because the university realizes its run of post-season play is over. Pack it in folks. The dream is dead.
  16. Grand Forks should be elated with the news of The Forum's purchase of The Herald; the Marcil family is very conscious of "community" in all of its connotations. The Herald could not have asked for better ownership once the Knight-Ridder die was cast.
  17. Wrong. It is because of boastful fans like you that my personal animosity is aimed at UMTC. Be gracious in victory and in defeat; it'll get you a lot farther in life. And yet when any other team has to play a day game after a night game, you pass off the short turnaround as an excuse. Can't have it both ways. Pick one.
  18. I think it is pretty plain to see that next season's Sioux team is going to be hard pressed to crack double digits in wins. There is no scoring (when Oshie and Towes leave); the still-young d-corps will awaken from their dream season last year and play like the teenagers they really are; and JPar's departure will ensure a 8+ GAA. Looks like it'll be a long, long winter for us.
  19. Everyone who is afraid that Jon will be gone from the Sioux roster this summer should be jumping for joy at this news.
  20. Your seat numbers are on your season ticket renewal invoice.
  21. I hate to say this, but go ahead...don't renew. The waiting list is still pretty deep to buy season tickets. Sorry, but it is what it is. p.s. sorry to cross post, but DAR was sad that college hockey has turned into a business. We've come to expect a very, very high level of play by our young men wearing the Fighting Sioux sweater. It costs more and more money to recruit, train and educate these kids every day. Think of what Berry's gasoline bill is while he's driving from rink to rink to rink trying to find the next first round draft choice. We can't expect to enjoy this same top level of play year after year if we aren't willing to pay the piper.
  22. 82SG, you are far more patient than most of us. Thank you for answering the question AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
