Hopefully he doesn't process it like he did when they got rid of the women's hockey program, as he seemed to rant on that for years to come, although his coverage of women's hockey before that didn't get near the play it did after.
-
It is generally pretty hard to get players to flip if the program is running smoothly. The fact that programs noticed big cracks in the program where they could get someone to jump ship is just another indictment on the regime. Thanks for making the argument for regime change Brad. I will add, why wasn't Alex Bump on everyones hit list, as that guy has it all. Could it be that Western has created a culture that attract players?
-
True, but why even throw in a line that basically says there is no guarantee they will win more. Really, I thought the Buffalo Sabres were guaranteed that for years. In the same token, there was no guarantee that UND would ever make the NCAA tournament again under Berry. It goes both ways, that is why it is a hard decision to make, but if Schlossman couldn't see that fans were starting to tune out, then he is letting the same type of loyalty that Berry has for certain players blind him.
-
I wonder if any of Boisvert, Perron, Livanavage or James leave, if Schlossman will put it on the coaching change rather than it might not have happened period if the team wasn't so dysfunctional.
-
Like Schlossman didn't hear the "next man up" culture that Berry preached.
-
Hey, I used some of the same arguments Schlossman was making defending Berry for years, but one has to ask Schlossman the question, how long could that chart that Oxbow referenced go on before it became a problem and not just "unlucky" in his eyes? When you see the fanbase slipping into apathy and not watching games, that seems the time to, like Barney Fife would say, "Nip it in the Bud"!
-
Notice Schlossman didn't mention all of the firsts under Berry that show the program slipping in stature, much like under Lucia where his record against his fellow Minnesota teams was brutal, especially with their recruiting advantages.
-
Actually, UND hasn't hoisted since Berry's first year, which is the problem.
-
Someone should ask Schlossman how much longer Minnesota should have gone on with Lucia, as he had a winning record. To be fair to Schlossman I am sure it is a whole lot easier to do interviews after losses with Berry than it was under Hakstol, because one was an intense competitor and probably a little ornery, and one just had the aww shucks we lost attitude.
-
Last year, not the time before in Sioux Falls.
-
Chaves looked at the numbers when Schlossman used to keep track of the record in the business suits under Hakstol, then had to go back and figure manually when Schlossman quit keeping track of it under Berry and decided 90% was a whole lot better than 50%, so actually it is Schlossman's fault. Nevermind the revenues lost in home ice playoffs, regionals, and fan apathy. He should be excited for a new coach, because it might create more excitement like it did for the football program and fan excitement is better for the Grand Forks Herald. I know I had been getting sick of reading one dimensional reporting.

Yeah, because Cary Eades, Dean Blais, Dave Hakstol & Scott Sandelin haven’t done anything.

2025-26 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

How about the great news from Major Juniors you said was happening about a month ago. -
I was under the impression that the locker room was divided because of some of the issues, which would mean not all were in step lock.

Maybe he can build something good at Augustana much like Hastings did at Minnesota State, but I see more and more the only way to get in the tourney through that league could be winning the league tourney. St. Thomas moving to the NCHC and their recruiting possibilities is only going to make it more difficult. When the NCHC doesn’t have an off year like this year, the road may be harder. More paths to the tourney through the NCHC, but who knows, maybe he is happy with the security at Augustana, because no doubt there would be much more pressure here. Don’t know any competitive guy though that isn’t confident and thrives under pressure if they are in position to win the ultimate prize.
-
Might as well bring in Josh Morton as AD as well.
-
Are you saying Western is more attractive than UND?
-
I’m guessing if the new coach misses the tournament and home ice half the time and only gets a single NCAA win, we will be looking for another coach in 4-5 years, not 9. Perhaps if Berry’s title was in the middle of his tenure rather than the beginning, people would be more apt to look at things differently, but playoff hockey after that point was in decline, which didn’t help his resume.
-
Considering the penalty kill was his thing and it probably kept us out of the tournament, I’m not sure we shouldn’t start fresh, although I think it should be up to the new coach, without any pressure either way.
-
Was that the Covid year?
-
…and you don’t think someone coaching in the fastest league and someone who beat probably the fastest team in Colorado a few years ago, hasn’t added a ton of knowledge to his already extensive coaching background!
-
So wasn’t Hakstol the last coach to bring the Kraken and Flyers to the playoffs. Beating the Avalanche in a series without the talent doesn’t scream passed him by.
-
He would know players in the CHL and basically all leagues, but it would be nice to know if the NHL players wanted him out because they didn’t want to play for him, or if that was just rumor, because if paid players couldn’t play under him, would younger players of today? A lot has changed in the period since Hakstol was here.

How many players did Western turn over from last year?
