... and what are those issues again? Schlossman has pointed out time and again what fans think and what the numbers point out, and people are going to still find issues. I guarantee you that when Hakstol wins one, the same fans that are o.k. with Duluth's record because they won a National Championship, will not have the same mercy on Hakstol if they have a losing record or don't make the tournament. Another thing I will guarantee you is that most of us will be here to remind them that an NCAA Championship is in the bank, and they shouldn't be complaining. And if you think Hakstol can't get it done and will only hang participation banners, why aren't you in the "Fire Hak" crowd?

So there are things that you haven't achieved? Perhaps you should be fired. I would suspect that Hakstol has achieved far more than any of us in his career, and that he is more disappointed in not winning the big one. I doubt Hakstol has any time to be spending so much time on a message board like all of us, because he is actually focusing his time on trying to reach that pinnacle that is missing.

Be careful of what you wish for when it comes to wanting a new coach. Bud Grant never won the big one, but I don't recall a steady barrage of wanting someone else to replace him. Maybe because it wasn't in the age of the internet, but look at the list of coaches that have followed him that haven't produced even Super Bowl appearances. I am sure there are many Viking fans longing for the days when they would consistently win Division titles and make runs at the Super Bowl. You could wind up with a coach that when the first half of the season doesn't live up to expectations, the players more or less fold similar to what Miami did this year. There have been several occasions with Hakstol's teams that you would think that some players could have been in the mail it in mode, but they turned it around. That is a testament to the type of players Hakstol recruits, and his ability to hold the team together when things aren't going great. Sure, I would like it not to come to that point so often, but so far there hasn't been a case when they didn't turn it around. That's gotta say something.

...and I think they said every time they have the regional they advance, when they don't, they haven't. Don't get me wrong, it's still impressive, but we haven't had that advantage like Minnesota and BC. I expect great things next year when it is in Fargo though.

Winning the National Championship today is a lot like winning the World Series of Poker. Even the best of players are lucky to make it to the final table. In hockey, to get to the Frozen Four, the coaches can do what they can to give their teams the best chance to win, but it is still a bit of the luck of the draw, having all your guys on board at the right time, and especially your goaltender. If your powerplay comes together at the right time, and your penalty killing as well, and your goaltender performs, you increase your chances substantially. I also think with the number of times Hakstol has brought his teams there, that the odds are going to turn in our favor at some point, and all the cards are going to fall for us.

On any given weekend, that is the case with a lot of teams, including the Sioux.

But the whole argument was that making the Frozen Four should be a given with talent like Oshie and Toews. I was only illustrating that as a 17 year old, Toews wasn't dominating college hockey, nor would I expect him to be the most dominant. He certainly was a high end player by the end of that season, but as the stats that year show, he wasn't head and shoulders ahead of everyone to the point where it should be a given his team makes the Frozen Four.

http://www.uscho.com/stats/overall/division-i-men/2005-2006/ But Potulny still put up better numbers. I never said they were slouches, but you make them out to be head and shoulders above everybody else and that wasn't the case.

But my point is that Minnesota had a lot of high draft picks too. Jim OBrien was drafted about the same position as Brock Nelson was, and Erik Johnson higher. So, if people want to make the argument because of where Oshie and Toews are at now in their career that they would make a Frozen Four just by talent alone, then Minnesota had just as many highly touted players. Just because they didn't turn out like Toews and Oshie doesn't mean that UND should have gone all the way, while Minnesota gets a pass. To the contrary, it means that those players must have developed better under Hakstol. I think that whole argument was based on how Oshie and Toews have turned out, even though they were not men amongst boys at the college level all the time, especially very early on.

Phil Kessel, Ryan Potulny, Erik Johnson, Kyle Okposo, Blake Wheeler, Nick Leddy, Jim O'Brien, Ryan Stoa, etc. Most coaches would've killed for those players as well. Erik Johnson was taken ahead of Toews, Blake Wheeler was a higher pick than anybody but Toews.

Yeah, kind of like the U.S. World Junior team looked like world beaters in their first few games, then made an early exit to the tournament this year. It all depends on how you are playing on that given day.

Thought I heard someone say it was 596.
-
Wouldn't he have to play a more defensive system with less talented players? You know Oshie and Toews weren't as dominant in their first years as Irmen and Potulny were, and they didn't automatically make the Frozen Four.

Oh yeah, no doubt Oshie will be considered a schmuck in his eyes if the U.S. doesn't win the gold. Other people need to be perfect in order to make up for his inadequacies.

Yeah, confidence is a funny thing. He shared USHL goaltender of the year honors with Zane Gothberg, but he seems to have lost the confidence factor a bit.
-
True, Miami's effort had a lot to be desired, but I find it interesting that when the Sioux finally keep all their motors running throughout the game, instead of it being looked at as a positive, it is all about the other team laying down. I guess some people just always have to be pessimistic. Sad.

Wouldn't mind seeing an A&W / Long John Silvers combo like Fargo has. Wish they would have never gotten rid of the A&W on the north end.

Did Rylan commit first? Don't believe he was as highly sought after as Jaden, but if he committed first, then maybe Jaden just decided he wanted to go where his brother did. Don't actually know the chronology.

Yeah, I would think that 42nd is going to be the next huge corridor, and what with all the plans the city is already making for that corridor, the restaurants will naturally follow. Think they are looking to get the street widened the rest of the way to 32nd very soon.

People were complaining the same when Eades was here because we hadn't won a national championship. There were things that precipitated the change in the coaching staff.

His answer usually is that he isn't saying Hakstol should be fired. I would submit that if after every loss Hakstol's systems or coaching seems to be his problem -- why isn't he asking for Hakstol's head?

I absolutely hate the shootout. Would rather have other teams blow out other teams with the league race this close. When both teams we are in the running against get points, it just makes it all that more difficult to put distance between ourselves and other teams. Points aren't awarded for just getting to overtime are they? I just keep hoping one team or the other would win outright.
