I don't think Nelson stays. He will enter the NBA draft and if he gets good reviews he'll stay in, if not he'll transfer to a bigger school to prove he can play at the top level competition in college. Same thing that Scheierman did last year.

    https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison-media-zone/mens-sports/mcfeely-ndsus-grant-nelson-about-to-enter-new-world

Him staying at NDSU is still an option, but it wouldn't make much sense if his goal is to get drafted in the NBA draft either this year or next year.

Will Walters be willing to wait until mid May or June for Nelson to make a decision?

8 out of the last 10 FCS Championships or whatever they're at now would say otherwise.

I actually think it proves my point.  The 3-4 or 4-3 has not slowed them down.

They also put 5 down linemen at times and it worked well. UND is putting 3 linemen down and it's not working. How much more proof does a guy need that this god awful 3-4 isn't working. Especially in the MVFC!

NDSU is the benchmark of the conference and based on that the 4-3 doesn’t work either.

Does Sem have grade issues or what is the problem there?  He is super explosive!

Tough home life.  No offers is a little alarming but we need an athletic playmaker…..Still need to offer in my mind.

Agreed.. Erickson looked solid last night.  Doppler was very underwhelming.  Jeremiah looked better as well as the two kids from red River.  Hopefully it was just a bad game for Doppler.

I don’t see Erickson in the rotation year one but with some added strength and conditioning he can play at this level.  Seems to have a high basketball IQ and is a bit of a throwback.

Not a good game for Doppler.  Believe he was 0-11.  Erickson played well, very good around the hoop

Doppler certainly hasn’t looked like a D1 player in either game.  This is the only two times I have watched him so very small sample size.

Erickson plays like he's 6'4".  Gets his shot blocked, has no lift to go up over people. He is a body, yes.

Yesterday he was better than Kraft.  Passes well and finishes pretty well around the rim using body to create space.  Question his mobility.   Will be interesting to watch him vs an up tempo North team tonight.  Not sure he fits the style UND played this year.

the real question becomes play with friends (Skunberg) at NDSU or honor family ties at UND & a coach on the hot seat

He only has one year left correct?

edit: by he I mean Walters

I’m not sure what him being preseason all summit has to do with him stepping into a new role. I can assure you it is not easy going from 3rd or 4th option to the go to guy. As talented as Nelson is, he had an up and down start to the season. I can assure you it’s hard to go from role playing bench player to the go to guard like Skunberg had to. I can assure you it’s hard to go from getting limited minutes as a freshman to playing extended minutes as a big man as Morgan did. I’m not even sure what you’re trying to argue. If you think making those adjustments is easy as a player you must have been a heck of a college player yourself

If I am reading this correctly an up and down season is acceptable if the pieces are new and/or adjusting to new roles?

They got 5 teams into the national tournament. May not have the best team in the country but top to bottom could be best conference in NAIA

I could be wrong but I believe 30% of the teams participating in NAIA make the playoff field.  I’d imagine any team in their conference with a record above .500 got in.

I do think he is the 2nd best basketball player in the state of ND regardless of how good his conference is.

That conference is the best overall conference in the NAIA.. teams in that conference consistently beat D2 teams.. many D1 teams won't schedule teams in the GPAC for their non-D1 games... To say that it is an awful conference is an insanely bad take

    It wasn’t good this year……..

Because they point out things that could be improved by the team?  Just tells me they are actually watching the games and understand the game.  Not just some Homer fans that will cheer on the team with no wins and think everything is just fine.

There is no doubt coach has made some of the changes that alot of us have been screaming about since the beginning.   Just because we point weakness in our team and coach doesn't mean we all don't want und to win!   I give coach Sather props for making some needed changes.  He to me still Has more to prove but he is going in the right direction now.  But when people on this forum see what needs changed before the coach does that concerns me.  Hoops03 makes alot of sense On his posts and also gives praise when deserved .

Go back and show me any posts where people didn’t agree with you and thought everything was fine. I think a lot of people were paying plenty of attention and knew what was going on and saw the potential.

He just doesn’t impress me much. Often he doesn’t want to play down low and is pretty lazy. But last night it looks like he finally remembered he was a post and not a guard and scored down low

I think some of that comes with kids that play a bunch of AAU ball.  Shanley kid is the same way probably a better ball handler though.  I’ll take a 6’10” body though with some skill level to compete in the Summit league.

Personally, I would love to have a beer or more with all on this site.

didnt Dosch used to coach at Jamestown college?

Then he was the head coach at Northern.  Before that he was at SIU.  Was the LB coach at UND for some of the best.

If you talk to people in Aberdeen he did a lot to get those facilities to where they are now.

Brings a lot of 3-4 experience for a young D cord.  Makes that hire less risky in my opinion

I'd bet having a beer with you is quite the experience.  Imagine what they can learn from you!!

I bet they love hearing how they don’t want to win, are D2 coaches and have a roster of D2 players.

    Why Not Minot too?

Not saying I agree with it.  They have been rumored for what…..2 years.   Plus they have the major donor money behind them that also is a major donor for 3 other teams in the conference.

In a roundabout way my post was agreeing with your line of thinking while at the same time trying to soften the blow for the "ever loyal" folks on here...I was trying to play middleman!  Hahaha...

I see both sides of the coin...but I tend to come down closer to your camp than all your haters.  I want this program to have the best resources possible to compete.  We currently lag behind some of our peers (not behind many of them...but the ones we do are very "visible").  I'm not blaming any stakeholders for where we sit...but it is what it is, and we need to close that gap.  That's an organizational issue more than it is a coaching staff issue.  We need to do better.

And I said it once and I'll say it again...this is D1...not the NAIA.  Wins and losses matter.  NDSU wouldn't put up with a program that struggles to ascend.  Hell I never thought our hockey fans would either...lofty expectations aren't a bad thing in my book!

"This is division one football! It's the (MVFC)!  It ain't intramurals!... Go play intramurals brother!" ~ Dan Hawkins (mostly)

All that said...these are important hires that I hope we get right...especially given the time crunch!  Hopefully it doesn't impact our recruiting too badly...but junior days have to be right around the corner!

I’m guessing the “ever loyal” fans share the expectations.  Just likely choose not to post about every post.  It’s a lazy argument, things go bad…..”I have been saying it for ever”……things are good…..”I’ve always been a fan”

For as bad as our coaches are, school support is, D2 players are, facilities are, fanbase sucks…..the program has moved into the “best conference” at our level and made the playoffs two of the three years.  Certainly not the expectation but you can’t win the Natty if you don’t get into the field.
